A generalized adder for cell size homeostasis: Effects on stochastic clonal proliferation

Measurements of cell size dynamics have revealed phenomenological principles by which individual cells control their size across diverse organisms. One of the emerging paradigms of cell size homeostasis is the adder, where the cell cycle duration is established such that the cell size increase from birth to division is independent of the newborn cell size. We provide a mechanistic formulation of the adder, considering that cell size follows any arbitrary nonexponential growth law. Our results show that the main requirement to obtain an adder regardless of the growth law (the time derivative of cell size) is that cell cycle regulators are produced at a rate proportional to the growth law, and cell division is triggered when these molecules reach a prescribed threshold level. Among the implications of this generalized adder, we investigate fluctuations in the proliferation of single-cell-derived colonies. Considering exponential cell size growth, random fluctuations in clonal size show a transient increase and then eventually decay to zero over time (i.e., clonal populations become asymptotically more similar). In contrast, several forms of nonexponential cell size dynamics (with adder-based cell size control) yield qualitatively different results: clonal size fluctuations monotonically increase over time, reaching a nonzero value. These results characterize the interplay between cell size homeostasis at the single-cell level and clonal proliferation at the population level, explaining the broad fluctuations in clonal sizes seen in barcoded human cell lines. © 2025 Biophysical Society

In this article, we investigate an intelligent ground penetrating radar (GPR) that facilitates root-zone soil moisture estimation, a key parameter in precision agriculture. To create an intelligent GPR, we must train machine learning (ML) methods applied to the GPR-received signal. This process requires a large number of labeled GPR data that would be time-consuming and labor-intensive if created via field measurements. This article uses gprMAX software to emulate drone-coupled GPR received signal to generate large-scale data for training ML models. The data are created via a 1.5 GHz Ricker waveform considering a three-layer soil consistent with a realistic soil horizon model. The approach is structured as follows: first, we generate a synthetic dataset using gprMAX. Feature engineering techniques are then employed to extract meaningful components from the GPR signals, followed by a rigorous selection process to identify the most effective ML model for soil moisture prediction. Finally, we validate our model by integrating synthetic data with real GPR data collected at the SoilX lab at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, enhancing prediction accuracy and generalization capability. Our proposed model achieves an overall average root-mean-squared error of 0.5%, and 1.56 cm for moisture and depth estimations, respectively. The proposed intelligent GPR, when installed on a drone, enables high horizontal (e.g., 10 m) and vertical (e.g., 1.5 cm) resolution and high penetration depth (beyond 2 m) megafarm root-zone 3-D moisture map creation. Thus, it offers much higher capabilities when compared to traditional methods, such as synthetic aperture radar and satellite imaging. These results facilitate efficient farming practices, such as optimizing irrigation models, for better crop yields and food security. © 2023 IEEE.

This study evaluates the effectiveness of pyrolysis oils, derived from key waste byproducts of the sugar industry, as collectors in the flotation of calcite, using phosphoric acid (PA) as depressant. The chemical structure of pyrolysis oil collectors (POCs) was analyzed using FTIR, GC-MS, and surface tension measurements, revealing a complex mixture of various molecular groups, including hydroxyl, carboxylic, aromatic, and alkane. The collecting effect of POC in calcite flotation was assessed through microflotation using an experimental setup based on Box-Behnken design (BBD). The findings revealed that, with an air flow rate of 0.9 L/min, a specific consumption of 95-99 mg/g, and a pH 6-7, the recovery rate of calcite achieved 88%. To validate the collector’s performances further, bench-scale flotation experiments revealed an enrichment of phosphate ore to 68.74 and 69.44% Bone Phosphate of Lime (BPL). The comprehensive multimodal characterization revealed distinct topographical changes in the calcite surface morphology, observed via AFM. This was followed by characteristic peak shifts in the Raman spectra, indicative of molecular-level interactions. Concurrently, the zeta potential measurements showed significant decreases to −22.32 and −20.95 mV for both POCs, corresponding to a notable enhancement in surface wettability. As a result, carboxylic acids, hydroxyls, and ester molecules were initially found to bind to Ca2+ sites on the lattice layer of the calcite surface, followed by the coadsorption of aromatics and hydrocarbon chains via hydrophobic interactions. © 2025 American Chemical Society.

The development of agricultural biostimulants (BS) has marked a significant advancement in bolstering crop resilience against environmental stressors. This study investigates synthesizing and applying six novel nano-based potassium (K)-enriched biostimulants that enhance micronutrient availability, nitrogen uptake, and subsequent plant growth during seed germination and developmental phases. Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Fourier-transform infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), the synthesized biostimulants were characterized before their application in soil-supporting wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivation. The biostimulants’ effects at three concentrations (0.1, 0.2, and 0.5 mmol) and were evaluated on physiological and biomolecular parameters. To assess nutrient availability, soil mineral content was analyzed via X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). An increase in biostimulant concentration led to a marked rise in seed germination rates, correlating with elevated bioavailability of nitrates, ammonia, sulfur, potassium, and other key micronutrients. At a threshold concentration of 0.2 mmol, a notable improvement in the bioavailability of nutrients and a significant increase in the total phenol and flavonoid content was observed. The phenolic content was measured using the Folin-Ciocalteu method and expressed as Gallic Acid Equivalents (GAE), while flavonoids were quantified based on quercetin equivalents. These phytochemicals were correlated with enhanced antioxidant activities, measured using the Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) assay. The results indicated an 80% increase in antioxidant capacity, particularly for biostimulant BS6 at the 0.2 mmol concentration. Furthermore, biostimulants demonstrated a positive effect on the elongation of radicles and plumules, contributing to improved plant vigor. This study investigated the effects of torrefaction on forest residue(FR)and its subsequent ap-plication as a bulk-loading filler in polylactic acid(PLA)*** enhanced the chemical properties of FR,improving its compatibility with PLA,and the crystallinity increased from 24.9%to 42.5%.The process also improved the hydrophobicity of PLA/biomass composites,as demonstrated by the water contact angle of 76.1°,closely matching that of neat PLA(76.4°).With the introduction of 20%modified biomass properties after torrefaction treatment,the tensile strength of PLA/biomass composite increased from 58.7 to 62.3 ***,the addition of torrefied forest residue(TFR)accelerated biodegradation by increasing the onset of degrada-tion and inhibiting *** 90 d,the biodegradability of PLA/biomass composites reached 94.9%,which had a 6.9%increase compared to the neat PLA(88.8%).Overall,this study highlights the potential of torrefaction in enhancing both the physical properties and biodegrad-ability of PLA-based composites,contributing to a more sustainable approach to reducing plastic pollution.

Neuropeptides configure the feeding network of Aplysia. For example, egestive activity is promoted by small cardioactive peptide (SCP), and ingestive activity is promoted by a combination of feeding circuit activating peptide (FCAP) and cerebral peptide 2 (CP-2). In addition, SCP and FCAP/CP-2 have a common network effect that does not contribute to motor program specification. They increase the excitability of an interneuron, B63. In this report, we further characterized the effects of peptides on B63. We performed voltage-clamp experiments and used a step protocol to look at steady-state currents. We found that SCP and FCAP/CP-2 both induced an inward current that was virtually absent in low-sodium saline. Previous work has established that B63 is unusual in the feeding circuit in that subthreshold depolarizations are autonomously generated that can trigger motor programs. Here, we show that this autonomous activity is more frequent in the presence of peptides. Previous studies have also shown that activity of the feeding central pattern generator (CPG) can be initiated by neurons that excite B63, e.g., by cerebral buccal interneuron 2 (CBI-2), a projection neuron that triggers biting-like motor programs. Here, we show that the latency of CBI-2-induced activity is decreased by stimulation of the esophageal nerve (EN) (which releases endogenous SCP). These results, taken together with previous results, indicate that peptides that act divergently to configure network activity additionally act convergently to promote motor program induction. We present data that suggest that this arrangement facilitates brief switches between ingestive and egestive motor activity. © 2025 The Authors.

Inventory management in the health sector, specifically in the pharmaceutical service, represents a high percentage of logistics costs, putting pressure on health institutions to optimize inventory management to guarantee the availability of supplies. On the other hand, different regulations worldwide establish the adoption of mechanisms and policies for adequate inventory management, a situation that in low- and middle-income countries is restricted by resource limitations and the low implementation of robust techniques and methodologies. Different applications of models for inventory management have been identified in the literature, such as optimization models, Lean tools, and multicriteria decision-making methods. However, integrated approaches to optimize demand management, ordering, and controlling pharmaceutical services supplies are still under development. Therefore, the present study proposes a three-phase hybrid approach based on MCDM techniques and data analytics to improve inventory management of the pharmaceutical service in a health research center. The first stage consisted of characterizing the process to identify aspects for improvement. In the second stage, a multicriteria ABC classification model based on F-AHP and TOPSIS was applied to classify laboratory supplies for three selected clinical studies. Furthermore, the appropriate forecasting method was chosen for each clinical study, and a combined model (P model and FEFO model) was applied to establish the reorder point. Then, strategies, mechanisms, and policies were proposed to improve inventory management and redesign the process flow. As the main results, a multicriteria ABC method was obtained to classify laboratory supplies, taking into account Rotation (GW = 0.512), Criticality (GW = 0.286), and Availability (GW = 0.203). In this study, we aim to enhance the efficiency of p-type tunnel oxide passivated contact (p-TOPCon) solar cells by improving charge carrier extraction while achieving higher fill factor (FF) and open circuit voltage (Voc). We explore various potential methods for the photovoltaic industrial procedure, including optimizing metallization patterns and techniques, such as the utilization of a high efficiency grid pattern (HEGP) in place of the conventional straight finger-line pattern (SFLP). Co-firing conditions, peak firing temperature, and belt speed are investigated for their impact on FF enhancement, along with evaluating the effects of single and double print processes. Furthermore, we examine the efficacy of Nafion treatment as a surface modification technique to enhance FF. Experimental results indicate that optimizing co-firing conditions and employing Nafion treatment significantly increased FF to approximately 83.26% in p-TOPCon solar cells. Adjusting peak firing temperature and belt speed, as well as implementing the double print process, demonstrate superior FF enhancement compared to the single print process. Additionally, Nafion treatment contributes to FF improvement by passivating surface defects and enhancing charge carrier collection. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into optimizing co-firing conditions and surface treatment techniques to enhance p-TOPCon solar cell efficiency (Eff) up to 23.50%, thus advancing high-efficiency photovoltaic technology. © 2024 The Korean Society of Industrial and engineering Chemistry

The increasing use of Information Technology (IT) in all areas of life, followed by increasing cybersecurity threats on the user side, makes cybersecurity awareness among users an obligation that must be met. Several solutions currently available (guides, discussion forums, workshops) have not been able to provide good results and are lacking in terms of user engagement, adaptability, and optimizing available resources, so technology-based learning is needed, especially AI. This paper introduces the design and prototype of an AI-based learning system, especially with the Naive Retrieval-Augmented Generation (Naive RAG) method with three steps, including Retrieval, Augmented, and Generation. The system combines contextual user questions and answers with internal and domain knowledge systems to explain cybersecurity awareness to users dynamically and personally. The prototype that has been developed is then tested using the Black Box Testing method to evaluate functionality and usability. The test results show that the functionality of the system built has run well with a percentage of success of 100%, so it can be used as a technologybased learning medium for education and learning of user security awareness. © 2025 IEEE.
