Numerical Simulation of Nanopulse Penetration of Biological Matter Using the z -Transform

Short duration, fast rise time ultra-wideband (UWB) electromagnetic pulses (“nanopulses”) are generated by numerous electronic devices in use today. Moreover, many new technologies involving nanopulses are under development and expected to become widely available soon. Study of nanopulse bioeffects is needed to probe their useful range in possible biomedical and biotechnological applications, and to ensure human safety. In this work we develop a computational approach to investigate electromagnetic fields in biological cells exposed to nanopulses. The simulation is based on a z-transformation of the electric displacement and a second-order Taylor approximation of a Cole–Cole expression for the frequency dependence of the dielectric properties of tissues, useful for converting from the frequency domain to the time domain. Maxwell’s equations are then calculated using the finite difference time domain method (FDTD), coupled with a perfectly matched layer to eliminate reflections from the boundary. Numerical results for a biological cell model are presented and discussed.

In this paper we consider the filtering of partially observed multi-dimensional diffusion processes that are observed regularly at discrete times. We assume that, for numerical reasons, one has to time-discretize the diffusion process which typically leads to filtering that is subject to discretization bias. The approach in [16] establishes that when only having access to the time discretized diffusion it is possible to remove the discretization bias with an estimator of finite variance. We improve on the method in [16] by introducing a modified estimator based on the recent work of [17]. We show that this new estimator is unbiased and has finite variance. Moreover, we conjecture and verify in numerical simulations that substantial gains are obtained. That is, for a given mean square error (MSE) and a particular class of multi-dimensional diffusion, the cost to achieve the said MSE falls. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Laryngeal imaging is widely used to investigate anatomical and physiological aspects of voice production. Laryngeal high-speed videoendoscopy (HSV) is a laryngeal imaging technique and a powerful tool enabling us to capture the vibratory details of vocal folds in each cycle of vibration. HSV is specifically useful for studying voice production in connected speech, where non-stationary and transitory behaviors of vocal folds are consistently observed. This capability of HSV becomes more valuable when studying voice disorders, which involve more irregular and non-stationary behaviors of vocal folds. In this work, HSV is used to study neurogenic voice disorders and compare them with normophonic voices. The HSV data were obtained from the speakers during production of connected speech. The data were collected using a monochrome high-speed camera coupled with a flexible nasolaryngoscope. The dataset for each participant contains hundreds of thousands of images, therefore, machine learning is used for the analysis of this big dataset. The results show that the machine learning approach is successful in the analysis of HSV data with high levels of accuracy. This tool can be used to capture different vibratory features of vocal folds during different instances of voice production helping us characterize the normal and disordered function of voice. © 2023 Maryam Naghibolhosseni et al. Assessing aesthetic preference is a fundamental task related to human cognition. It can also contribute to various practical applications such as image creation for online advertisements. Despite crucial influences of image quality, auxiliary information of ad images such as tags and target subjects can also determine image preference. Existing studies mainly focus on images and thus are less useful for advertisement scenarios where rich auxiliary data are available. Here we propose a modality fusion-based neural network that evaluates the aesthetic preference of images with auxiliary information. Our method fully utilizes auxiliary data by introducing multi-step modality fusion using both conditional batch normalization-based low-level and attention-based high-level fusion mechanisms, inspired by the findings from statistical analyses on real advertisement data. Our approach achieved state-of-the-art performance on the AVA dataset, a widely used dataset for aesthetic assessment. Besides, the proposed method is evaluated on large-scale real-world advertisement image data with rich auxiliary attributes, providing promising preference prediction results. Through extensive experiments, we investigate how image and auxiliary information together influence click-through rate. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Iterative algorithms are of utmost importance in decision and control. With an ever growing number of algorithms being developed, distributed, and proprietarized, there is a similarly growing need for methods that can provide classification and comparison. By viewing iterative algorithms as discrete-time dynamical systems, we leverage Koopman operator theory to identify (semi-)conjugacies between algorithms using their spectral properties. This provides a general framework with which to classify and compare algorithms.

This paper proposes a distributed-memory parallel routing algorithm for FPGAs based on the partitioning of the routing graph under special FPGA architectural constraints. Coarse-grain parallelism is adopted by assigning different processors to the routing of nets within different partitions of the routing graph. The experimental results have demonstrated that TDR can achieve linear and superlinear speedups in relation to the state-of-art VPR router even when it is running on an Ethernet cluster of workstations. However, it usually requires more tracks than VPR for routing the same circuit. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Study on the identification and classification of fish is challenging and valuable because of its role in advancing the marine and agricultural fields. This research has benefits interms of monitoring fish populations and ecosystems in a particular area. Furthermore, this research helps monitor fish that are considered threatened or endangered so that it makes iteasier to map prohibited areas for fishing. This research aims to know performance of MobileNetV2 and VGG16 with parameter tuning process by identifying the value of batch size, epoch, learning rate, and optimizer for fish image dataset. The proposed research phase consists of five main stages, including experimental setup, dataset construction, dataset preprocessing, dataset training and modelling and evaluation. As the result, VGG16 obtained the highest accuracy value. For VGG16 without fine-tuning, the testing accuracy is 98.07%. For VGG16 with fine-tuning, the testing accuracy is 96.56%. © 2022 IEEE.

The aim of this study was to map the innovation of services in small and medium-sized enterprises, as reported on the Web of Science and SCOPUS databases, using a structured review, involving 121 papers published between 1946 and 2019. There has been an increase in the number of studies in recent years, covering 23 countries on six continents, with the UK representing 48.78% of the studies. Patterns in the use of methods applied in research were identified, as well as a conceptual structure of the field. The main areas of science were finance, marketing, energy, and green engineering. The study makes an original contribution to the literature, highlighting the interest in the expansion of knowledge among the academic community, in addition to enabling a deeper analysis of the relation between the evaluated constructs. © 2020, The Author(s).

In this paper we study convergence of the max-product (MP) algorithm on general graphs with cycles. Our analysis follows analogously to that given for the convergence of the sum-product algorithm. We do not work with Gibbs measures but instead we introduce and work with local maxifiers. The contributions of this paper include: reformulation of the MP algorithm on cyclic graphs as max-marginalization on an associated computation tree; existence of local maxifiers and proof that uniqueness of the local maxifier is sufficient for convergence of MP; a Gibbsian theory of local maxifiers and interpretation as operators; an example of non-uniqueness which does not exhibit a phase transition like its Gibbs measure counterpart; and insights into the limitations of Dobrushin-type uniqueness conditions
