The Architecture, engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry will benefit significantly from integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Extended Reality (XR) technologies. This paper explores the immense potential of AI-enhanced XR in tackling the industry challenges. While AI and XR are currently employed independently, this paper proposes a framework for their integration, aiming to optimize resource allocation, elevate safety protocols, and enhance project accuracy. Supported by a SWOT analysis, the study presents practical implications and proposed use cases showcasing the application of AI and XR in AEC projects. The paper provides a strategic roadmap for integrating AI-driven XR, emphasizing its potential to drive immediate and sustainable advancements in construction practices and set new industry benchmarks for innovation and efficiency. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

When confronted with unforeseen challenges, practicing informed decision making is crucial for enhancing resilience in the built environment. While scan-to-building information modeling (BIM) is a well-established approach for creating detailed digital representations of physical assets, its application in assessing and improving infrastructure resilience remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by proposing a novel application of scan-to-BIM, namely, scan-to-BIM-to-digital twin (S-BIM-DT) workflow. By integrating reality capture and digital twin technologies, this workflow creates continuously updated and accurate digital representations of physical assets, enabling the generation of various scenarios. Unlike traditional methods, the S-BIM-DT workflow facilitates continuous model refinement, supporting informed resilience strategies. By combining these technologies into a cohesive process, the workflow facilitates decision making under uncertainty, enabling stakeholders to evaluate and respond to various scenarios effectively. We demonstrate the implementation of the S-BIM-DT workflow through two use cases that highlight its capability to enhance resilience at different scales. The first use case involves the Combined Transportation, Emergency, and Communications Center (CTECC) in Austin, Texas. BIM-enriched computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling simulates airflow and develops alternative scenarios for optimizing the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. This approach enhances resilience against airborne health threats in a postCOVID context. The second use case focuses on designated areas within Beaumont, Texas, as part of the Southeast Texas Urban Integrated Field Laboratory (SETx-UIFL) research. By developing inundation maps to assess extreme weather events, this modeling aids in preparedness efforts and informs the development of climate-resilient infrastructure in vulnerable neighborhoods. Most firms perform design and engineering to economic criteria, as a portion of normal activities. This paper attempts to encourage further use of financial engineering by describing its two essential features: 1) project evaluation and 2) project financing. Preceding these descriptions is background discussion on changing project environments and engineers' training in finance. As a whole this paper presents a view of a new, evolving discipline that may soon become an indispensable component of major civil engineer projects.

Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) have emerged as an important project delivery method in the United States, where funding agencies are finding it difficult to support the increasing demand of highway projects. The United States has witnessed several types of PPPs during the past two decades, and a recent trend shows that newer designs of PPPs are being adopted for upcoming projects. Availability Payment, an extensively used PPP in the United Kingdom and Canada, is the newest performance-based PPP implemented in California and Florida. Extensive use of these PPPs in other countries strongly supports the belief of their widespread acceptance in the United States. The literature review indicates that concession term and availability payments are the most important parameters of this PPP. However, the public agencies do not have any solid tool that can design these parameters and have to largely depend on traditional methods. This research work introduces a hybrid model that will allow the public sector to determine the upper limit of availability payments and concession duration. The hybrid model has been developed by combining the stochastic dynamic programming model with multi-objective optimization principles. The model allows using private sector's financial condition, uncertainty of private sector's performance and the remaining life cycle costs of the asset. The use of this model ensures cost savings for the public sector and financial stability for the private sector simultaneously. This research includes an analysis of the CALTRANS' Presidio Parkway project as a case study to demonstrate the use of the model. © 2012 ASCE.

In the face of climate change and population growth in coastal regions, land-use analysis efforts are more challenging than ever. Land-use decision-makers in coastal communities are burdened with the difficult choices of where to place new homes versus other assets. While there has been an increased focus on hazard mitigation and disaster resilience in the field of planning, evidence points towards continued development in risk-prone areas including flood zones. Residential development within flood zones specifically continues to be a major issue. To help counter this trend, this study introduces a novel land-use analysis method, coupling topographic flood inundation mapping techniques with digital elevation model (DEM) adaptations. This Topographic Model Scenario Generation workflow can be used by planners early in the land-use decision making process and provides an alternative to high-computational hydraulic models. The analysis also includes the identification of strengths and weaknesses of topographic models' recognition of built infrastructure assets, adding to a limited body of knowledge addressing recommended uses of such models. Levees and canals prove particularly functional in this context while detention ponds less so, likely due to a lack of total water mass accountability. Finally, we provide a functional demonstration in Southeast Texas to illustrate the workflow's ability to create multiple infrastructure scenarios and visualize their effects across different flood events. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

In this experiment, we study the scale free network property of an organizational communication network. We used social network analysis methods during organizational crisis period that captures the dynamics of communication networks. We did not find any significant fluctuation between the actor prominence in daily and aggregated networks. We found that email communication network displays a high degree of scale free behavior described by power law.

A multiobjective optimization model for project selection with probabilistic considerations

When faced with limited resources, project managers must determine which projects to fund at what levels from a pool of potential ones. This problem of project selection is inherently multiobjective since various factors, such as the available budget, the chance of success, and the efficient allocation of the project team, must be considered simultaneously. The uncertainty of the data at the time decisions are made further complicates project selection. In this paper, a multiobjective, integer-constrained optimization model with competing objectives for project selection is formulated using probability distributions to describe costs. The objectives correspond to important project criteria, such as: rank (value), managerial labor needed, and average cost. The subjective rank is determined via the Analytic Hierarchy Process. The model is applied to a data set from a US government agency that involves 84 separate projects. The results indicate improved budgetary efficiency compared to the actual project selection, thus supporting use of the model for public sector project selection. The model is unique since it integrates multiobjective optimization, Monte Carlo simulation, and the Analytic Hierarchy Process. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

There are significant Points of Intersection and Overlaps between project / program Managers (PMs) and the Chief Systems Engineer (CSE) / Systems Engineers (SE). In some projects, the PM is the Technical Lead, or the CSE is the PM, regardless of Role, the project leader is responsible for project success through adherence to the "Golden Triangle". However, if Roles and Responsibilities are not clearly defined early in the project lifecycle when both professions are present, this can lead to unproductive tensions between PMs and the CSE that can be an impediment to project / program performance. Key sources of unproductive tensions are the lack of integrated planning, lack of or unclear communications, unclear definition roles and authority, and conflicting practices between the two overlapping roles. We address relevant causes of unproductive tensions, highlight the importance of collaboration between project management and systems engineering, describe the points of intersection and overlaps in the core competencies between the disciplines, as described by their respective profession organizations (PMI & INCOSE), and explore the Overlaps between the educational curricula for an M.S. in project management and an M.S. in Systems engineering. We then suggest promising practices for enhancing effective integration between the two disciplines with the aim of improving project and program performance. © 2017 PICMET.

Clustering is an unsupervised learning method that provides insights by investigating unknown structures in a dataset without exploiting any ground truth target information. For constructing an as-built Building Information Models (BIM) from captured laser-scanned datasets, the segmentation process precedes modeling, which provides a baseline to be traced for obtaining 3D models from point clouds. For the segmentation process, a clustering algorithm can be effectively applied so that it can group the points having similar features without predefined criteria which, in turn, segments can be easily separated from the entire scene. Amongst various types of clustering algorithms, Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN) was developed as a density-based and hierarchical clustering algorithm which provides a simplified tree of significant clusters. This algorithm has several distinct advantages over other clustering algorithms: (1) avoids "flat" (i.e. non-hierarchical) labeling of data objects, (2) automatically simplifies the hierarchy into the most significant clusters, and (3) requires a single input parameter (i.e. minimum number of points) for density threshold. However, this algorithm has an overall computation time complexity represented as a quadratic form (i.e., O (dn2) ) which suffers from the computational efficiency issue especially for massive amounts of data such as those found in 3D point clouds. To ease the applicability of HDBSCAN to Scan-to-BIM applications, this research aims to parallelize major time-consuming components of HDBSCAN algorithm. OpenMP interface was adopted for thread parallelization and parallel efficiency was measured by calculating speedup and efficiency from strong and weak scaling results. © 2023, Canadian Society for Civil engineering.

The Japanese concept 'poka yoke', translated into English as 'mistake proofing,' has been mentioned at previous IGLC conferences. This notwithstanding, mistake proofing appears to not have been (nor be) systematically researched or practiced in the lean construction community. To raise awareness of opportunities provided by thinking with mistake proofing in mind as a means to build quality into project delivery, this paper summarizes the philosophy that underlies mistake proofing. Examples illustrate how mistake proofing applies to the work done within one specialty trade, how manufacturers and fabricators can design their products so they cannot be constructed defectively, and how architects and engineers may conceive of system designs that are less likely to fail during construction or in a product's life cycle.
