Ontology for Virtualization of Lean Construction Games

Research Question: How can serious games for Lean Construction courses, traditionally implemented in person, be efficiently virtualized for hybrid or online education? Purpose: This paper creates an ontology (a set of concepts and categories in a subject area or domain that shows their properties and the relations between them) for the methodical identification, sequencing, and implementation of universal elements of any serious game into a computer-based instructional environment. For validation we provide practical lessons from having implemented this approach on several Lean Construction games in college courses. Research Design/Method: We assemble core elements, including ‘atoms’, from game design literature into an ontology. Each element is individually converted into virtual mode;often more than one possible way exists. Having placed them into an ontology ensures that the outcome will be a fully functional game, yet transferred to its new mode. We apply this virtualization approach to existing Lean Construction games. Findings: We find that games even with substantial physical components and interactions can indeed be successfully virtualized, retaining their full educational experience. Limitations: While we have validated the ontology on several Lean games, it has not been tested for serious games in other areas, nor been used to inspire creating new ones. Implications: We hope that this research will facilitate the increased use of gamification in Lean Construction and other courses, and may inspire further study of the underlying conceptual similarities of games and production processes. Adapting our approach can allow developing new serious games to convey knowledge about a specific topic. Value for practitioners: Gamification of higher education can be significantly advanced by the systematic, ontological identification of the main elements and relations needed to implement serious games. Bifunctional hybrid anodes(BHAs),which are both a high-performance active host material for lithium-ion storage as well as a guiding agent for homogeneous lithium metal nucleation and growth,exhibit significant potential as anodes for next-generation high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries(LIBs).In this study,sulfur-doped hard carbon nanosphere assemblies(S-HCNAs)were prepared through a hydrothermal treatment of a liquid organic precursor,followed by high-temperature thermal annealing with elemental sulfur for application as BHAs for *** a carbonate-based electrolyte containing fluoroethylene carbonate additive,the S-HCNAs showed high lithium-ion storage capacities in sloping as well as plateau voltage sections,good rate capabilities,and stable *** addition,high average Coulombic efficiencies(CEs)of~96.9%were achieved for dual lithium-ion and lithium metal storage *** the LIB full-cell tests with typical NCM811 cathodes,the S-HCNA-based BHAs containing~400 mA h g^(−1) of excess lithium led to high energy and power densities of~500Wh kg^(−1) and~1695Wkg^(−1),respectively,and a stable cycling performance with~100%CEs was achieved.

Seagrass Meadows under the Changing Climate:A Review of the Impacts of Climate Stressors

Seagrass meadows provide important ecological functions,particularly by serving as carbon sinks and breeding grounds for marine *** change has threatened seagrass communities,causing their replacement,loss and increased *** review examined scholarly articles published between 2010-2021 to comprehensively present the impacts of climate change on seagrass *** shows that ocean warming negatively affects seagrass communities by favouring communities of lower structuring capacities,thus reducing the effectiveness of their ecological *** warming also promotes the propagation and spread of invasive species,and changes the trophic structures leading to further loss of seagrasses of *** seawater temperature is associated with shoot mortality and retarded growth of certain *** level rise causes more wave energy to be received by coastal seagrass communities,thus,creating more damage to the *** sea limits light penetration and alters distribution of seagrass *** dioxide enrichment of seawater increases photosynthetic rate of seagrasses but ocean warming and acidification counteract this beneficial *** dioxide enrichment affects different seagrass species and different parts of a seagrass species differently,and,where beneficial to seagrass communities,could enhance their ecological *** extremes could kill seagrasses while marine heatwaves and flooding could act synergistically to increase carbon demand of certain seagrasses and unfavourably change their *** impacts are often aggravated by anthropogenic *** review calls for more studies and conservation efforts to understand the impacts of climate change on seagrass communities and future-proof them against the changing climate.

Chevrel phase compounds have attracted increasing attention as electrochemical energy storage materials and electro-catalysts. Benefiting from their unique crystal structure, Chevrel phase compounds can not only function as the host structures for reversible intercalation of a broad range of cations, but also exhibit high catalytic activity in electrochemical reduction reactions. Here we provide an overview of recent progress in the development of Chevrel phase materials including new understanding of structural features, synthetic methods, and electrochemical properties. A brief conclusion and perspectives on the future development of Chevrel phase materials are also provided.

Increasing amount of waste poses substantial environmental issues because poor waste management emits higher greenhouse gas (GHG, contributing to global warming and climate change. As Indonesia's most populous city, Jakarta faces challenges related to waste management. The city generates significant waste daily, with limited resources and funding to manage it *** study aims to analyze GHG emissions from Jakarta's waste sector and design management scenarios to optimize GHG emission reductions. The research examines local factors to determine the most effective scenario for Jakarta from three proposed waste management designs. The findings may serve as a basis for policymaking that promotes low-carbon and climate-resilient regional development. The study demonstrates that integrated waste management can significantly reduce GHG emissions compared to current practices in Jakarta. However, challenges related to policy and legal frameworks, stakeholder engagement, waste facility technologies, and financial resources must be addressed to achieve these reductions. © 2024, The Authors. Airfield pavement inspection and maintenance are critical aspects of aviation infrastructure, representing a substantial portion of life-cycle costs. Longitudinal, transverse, and diagonal (LTD) cracks;corner breaks;shattered slabs in Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement;and longitudinal and transverse (L&T) cracks of asphalt concrete (AC) pavement consist of most of the airfield pavement distresses. Traditional airfield pavement inspection methods are manual, time-consuming, laborious, and reliant on the inspector’s experience, leading to increased expenses and safety risks. This research explores the potential to automatically identify those distresses in red-green-blue images using four variants of deep learning (DL) model YOLOv8, ranging from nano to large. YOLOv8 is a widely used off-the-shelf DL object detection model that allows rapid training and easy execution. A DL training dataset of 5,273 small uncrewed aircraft systems (sUAS) collected images was developed. The transfer learning technique was used, and the dataset passed through each model 100 times for adequate training. The model exhibits mean average precision values exceeding 0.65, with varying processing times. Such accuracy showed that crack-related distress detection using DL models could enhance airfield pavement inspection efficiency. © ASCE.

CorrA: Leveraging Large Language Models for Dynamic Obstacle Avoidance of Autonomous Vehicles

In this paper, we present Corridor-Agent (CorrA), a framework that integrates large language models (LLMs) with model predictive control (MPC) to address the challenges of dynamic obstacle avoidance in autonomous vehicles. Our approach leverages LLM reasoning ability to generate appropriate parameters for sigmoid-based boundary functions that define safe corridors around obstacles, effectively reducing the state-space of the controlled vehicle. The proposed framework adjusts these boundaries dynamically based on real-time vehicle data that guarantees collision-free trajectories while also ensuring both computational efficiency and trajectory optimality. The problem is formulated as an optimal control problem and solved with differential dynamic programming (DDP) for constrained optimization, and the proposed approach is embedded within an MPC framework. Extensive simulation and real-world experiments demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves superior performance in maintaining safety and efficiency in complex, dynamic environments compared to a baseline MPC approach. © 2025, CC0.

The coal-fired power plant fly ash (FA) and bottom ash (BA) are gradually used as alternative materials in the concrete. However, knowledge of the leaching characteristics of using both incinerator ashes in concrete production is lacking. This work aimed to evaluate the leaching behavior of the FA and BA used in concrete production by employing batch and tank leaching tests. The outcomes of both leaching tests showed that there was no considerable leaching of any trace elements to the environment, and it remains much lower than standard limitations for utilization as construction materials. The results of cumulative mass discharge showed that the slope of flux time for all elements was less than 0.4 and because of that, primary surface wash-off was the main discharge process of all the heavy metals. Strength test results revealed that there was not much difference between coal ash concrete (CAC) and the control mix at the initial age of curing time. Despite that, at a long period of curing time (180 days), the compressive strength of CAC containing 20% FA as cement replacement and 100% BA as fine aggregate replacement increased by 76% due to the pozzolanic reaction of BA and FA in comparison to the normal concrete, while, due to the high porosity of BA, the workability of CAC decreased by 50%. The outcomes of the current work revealed that the combined use of FA and BA can be counted as a promising alternative in the production of sustainable concrete for structural applications toward sustainable development. Phthalate as plasticizer is commonly used in plastics industries. Phthalate compounds that are commonly found in everyday life are diethyl phthalate (DEP). This compound is dangerous because it is carcinogenic, xenoestrogenic and has endocrine disrupting effects. The accumulation of plastic in landfill causes this compound to be identified in leachate range from ND- 33 mg/l. one of active landfill in Bandung shows concentration of DEP 1.277 mg/L- 2.4 mg/l. Biological treatment was investigated for DEP removal. The treatment involves the degradation of DEP using fungi isolated from leachate samples. Degradation tests were carried out at varying concentrations of 2 mg/l, 4 mg/l, 6 mg/l, 8 mg/l and 10 mg/l as a carbon source for fungi growth. Duration of analysis is 15 days or until fungi decay phase achieved. High Performance Liquid Chromatography analysis shows that DEP removal efficiency reached 98-99% in each concentration variation on day 9 with a specific fungal growth rate of 0.0531-0.111/day © 2024, The Authors. Wrong-way driving(WWD)has been a long-lasting issue for transportation agencies and law enforcement,since it causes pivotal threats to road *** being rare,crashes occurring due to WWD are more severe than other types of *** order to analyze WWD crashes,there is a need to obtain WWD incidents or crash ***,it is time-consuming to identify actual WWD crashes from potential WWD crashes in large crash *** often involves large man-hours to review hardcopy of crash narratives in the police ***,it may cause an overestimation or underestimation of WWD crash *** fill this gap,the present study,as the first-of-its-kind,aims at identifying actual WWD crashes from potential WWD crashes in police reports by using machine learning ***,Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers(BERT)models have shown promising results in natural language *** this study,we implemented the BERT model as well as five conventional classification algorithms,including Naïve Bayes(NB),Support Vector Machine(SVM),Decision Tree(DT),Random Forest(RF),and Single Layer Perceptron(SLP)to classify crash report narratives as actual WWD and non-WWD ***-validation and different performance metrics were used to evaluate the performance of each classification *** indicated that the BERT model outperformed in identifying actual WWD crashes in comparison with other algorithms with an accuracy of 81.59%.The BERT classification algorithm can be implemented to reduce the time needed to identify actual WWD crashes from crash report narratives.
