In this study, a novel continuous flow liquid-phase plasma process was evaluated to remove NH3-N from synthetic wastewater. The process was optimized and modelled using response surface methodology (RSM). The Box-Behnken experimental design was used to determine the effects and optimal conditions of key operating parameters, including the initial NH3-N concentration (50-200 mg/L), power input (150-300 W), and gas-flow rate (1.5-2.5 L/min) for efficient NH3-N removal from wastewater samples. The gas-flow rate and power input were found to be the most significant factors affecting the removal efficiency of NH3-N, whereas the initial concentration of NH3-N played a crucial role in determining the energy efficiency of the process. Under optimal conditions of an initial NH3-N concentration of 200 mg/L, applied power of 223 W, and gas-flow rate of 2.4 L/min, 98.91% of NH3-N could be removed with N2 selectivity of 92.91%, and the corresponding energy efficiency was 0.527g/kWh after 2 hrs of treatment. A small fraction of undesirable NO3 (35.03 mg/L) and NO2 (6.5 mg/L) were also produced. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) has revealed the presence of several highly oxidative radicals, including ‧OH, ‧O, and ‧O2+. These results demonstrate the potential of liquid phase plasma discharge as a highly efficient technology for removing ammonia from aqueous solutions. © 2023 ASABE Annual International Meeting. A series of unique 3D flower-like Bi_(2)MoO_(6)(BMO)/reduced graphene oxide(rGO)heterostructured composites decorated with varying amounts of Ag nanoparticles(NPs)were *** morphological characteristics,structural features,energy band structures and photoelectrochemical properties were systematically *** the Ag/BMO/rGO ternary composites(AgBGy;y=1%,2%and 3%)demonstrated greater photocatalytic activity towards efficient removal of our selected organic models[methyl orange(MO),rhodamine B(RhB)and phenol],as compared with the BMO/rGO binary composites(BG-x;x=0.25,2,4 and 5).Particularly,AgBG-2%,which was synthesized with the addition of 2 wt% rGO and 2 wt%Ag in BMO,possessed superior photocatalytic *** fitted rate constants(k)for the photocatalytic degradation of RhB,MO and phenol using AgBG-2% were estimated to be 0.0286,0.0301 and 0.0165 min^(-1),respectively,which were over one order of magnitude greater than those obtained using pure *** factors may contribute to the observed enhancement,including greater specific surface area,enhanced light absorption,promoted spatial separation of electronhole(e^(-)-h^(+))pairs and their suppressed recombination,especially benefiting from the synergistic effects among BMO,rGO and Ag *** work suggests that the rational design of BMO/rGO/Ag ternary composite was an effective strategy to boost the photocatalytic activity of the resulting catalyst towards the highly efficient removal of organic pollutants from water.

Harnessing the Drivers and Barriers to Implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility for Circular Economy in Nigeria

Extended producer responsibility (EPR) is increasingly being recognized across the globe as a veritable scheme to realize the circular economy. This is because it has the potential to close the material cycles and foster effective waste management through the ‘polluter pay principle’ that allows the producers to internalize the cost of the environmental externalities of their products. Notwithstanding these realities, research on the drivers and barriers to the implementation of EPR at the macro-level circular economy in developing countries is still lacking, particularly in Africa where studies are few and primarily focus on single end-of-life (Eol) product analysis. Contributing to this gap in knowledge, the current study analyzes four Eol product cases in Nigeria — waste of electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE), plastic waste, glass bottle waste, and tyre waste — in an empirical investigation that involves an iterative process of case comparison and perspectives elicited from focus group discussions. The study findings identify major drivers of EPR implementation in Nigeria which include the emergence of social initiatives that participate in waste collection and recycling (4 cases), the pre-existing returnable glass bottle process (1 case), the organized value chain of informal waste recycling (4 cases), and already established producer responsibility organizations (3 cases). The main barriers include the absence of waste and economic data (4 cases), the absence of proper channels for waste collection and segregation (4 cases), the ineffective legislature (4 cases), unavailable producers (3 cases), and the availability of small and medium enterprises that lack the financial capacity to implement the EPR program (3 cases). The study suggests integrating informal waste recyclers into the EPR program and implementing a deposit refund system (DRS). Irrigated agriculture in arid and semi-arid regions is a vital contributor to the global food supply. However, these regions endure massive evaporative losses that are compensated by exploiting limited freshwater resources. To increase water-use efficiency in these giga-scale operations, plastic mulches are utilized;however, their non-biodegradability and eventual land-filling renders them unsustainable. In response, we have developed superhydrophobic sand (SHS) mulching technology that is comprised of sand grains or sandy soils with a nanoscale coating of paraffin wax. Here, we investigate the effects of 1 cm-thick SHS mulching on the evapotranspiration and phenotypic responses of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants as a model system under normal and reduced irrigation inside controlled growth chambers. Experimental results reveal that under either irrigation scenario, SHS mulching suppresses evaporation and enhances transpiration by 78% and 17%, respectively relative to the unmulched soil. Comprehensive phenotyping revealed that SHS mulching enhanced root xylem vessel diameter, stomatal aperture, stomatal conductance, and chlorophyll content index by 21%, 25%, 28%, and 23%, respectively, in comparison with the unmulched soil. Consequently, total fruit yields, total dry mass, and harvest index increased in SHS-mulched plants by 33%, 20%, and 16%, respectively compared with the unmulched soil. We also provide mechanistic insights into the effects of SHS mulching on plant physiological processes. These results underscore the potential of SHS for realizing food–water security and greening initiatives in arid regions. © 2022 The Authors. In the digital age, managing urban heritage sites presents unique challenges that necessitate the integration of smart technologies. This review assesses the integration and impact of smart city initiatives on sustainable environmental management in urban heritage sites. Through a comprehensive literature review of 84 papers from ScienceDirect and Scopus, this study categorizes the findings into three themes: Smart City Initiative Analysis, Heritage Site Considerations, and Smart Technology Integration Models. The review highlights the significant contributions of smart technologies, such as digital analysis, 3D documentation, and Information and communication technology, in enhancing sustainability and preserving cultural values. Case studies from Amsterdam, Barcelona, Seville, and Uzbek illustrate these initiatives’ practical applications and outcomes. The paper underscores the need for robust policies, public awareness, and multidisciplinary collaboration to maximize the benefits of smart city initiatives. Finally, the study identifies gaps in current research and suggests further research directions for integrating smart technologies into urban heritage site management.

Overpopulation globally is an addressed issue impacting human lives, marine lives, and the surrounding ecosystem;it is adding pressure on the available resources that should be optimized to suit the needs. Yet with improper management of resources and monitoring of daily activities, the environment will be further negatively impacted. With overpopulation higher urbanization rates are noticed with the demand of seeking better health facilities, better education, better jobs and better well-being;this progression is driving more demand into the infrastructure sector to be able to accommodate the growth rates. Hence, the need to having sustainable communities aiming at optimizing the resources used, working towards more feasible, environmentally friendly and cost-effective communities with a better occupant’s experience is in action. Sustainable development goals (SDG) are vital goals developed by the United Nations Development program (UNDP) in 2015 to address and guide through 17 interconnected global goals serving the previously mentioned trend. Out of the 17 goals, Sustainable Cities and Communities (goal #11) and Good Health and Well-Being (goal #3) are the focus of this paper directed towards holding a comparative analysis between the community scale commonly known and mostly used rating system Leadership of Energy and environmental Design (LEED-Cities and Communities) (USA) versus similar rating systems like Tarsheed-Communities (Egypt) and Estidama-Pearl (UAE) rating systems meeting sustainable development goal #11. Conjointly, another complimenting comparative review of the occupant’s health and wellbeing rating systems, such as Fitwel (USA) and Well (USA) are studied under sustainable development goal #3;however, they are focused on a building scale assessment. The development of artificial intelligence technology has driven the emergence of various innovations in human-machine interaction, one of which is the chatbot. A chatbot is software that can interact with humans through text or voice, creating the impression that they are communicating with real people. Currently, chatbots are very popular. This chatbot was developed as a collaboration between the team from Soegijapranata Catholic University as part of the Higher Education Community and KRS BP2P Java III within the Kedaireka Matching Fund platform. The chatbot that has been developed aims to provide information services related to the process of building self-built housing. The KRS BP2P Java III chatbot makes it easier for the community to enhance their understanding of self-reliance in fulfilling the need for decent housing. © 2024 IEEE.

Magnetorheological fluids(MRFs)have been successfully used in a variety of smart control systems,but are still limited due to their relatively poor settling ***,a core/shell‐structured Fe_(3)O_(4)/copolymer composite nanoparticle is synthesized as a new candidate material for stimulus‐responsive MRFs to tackle the limitation of the long‐term dispersion ***‐co‐diphenylamine copolymers(PANI‐co‐PDPA)are loaded onto the surface of Fe_(3)O_(4) nanoparticles,providing a lighter density and sufficient active interface for the dispersion of magnetic particles in the carrier *** features of the Fe_(3)O_(4)/copolymer composite nanoparticles,including morphology,compositional,and crystalline properties,are *** MRF is prepared by suspending Fe_(3)O_(4)/copolymer composite nanoparticles in a nonmagnetic medium oil,and its rheological properties are assessed using a controlled shear rate test and dynamic oscillation tests using a rotational *** models including the Bingham model and the Herschel–Bulkley model are fitted to the flow curves of the *** obtained Fe_(3)O_(4)/copolymer composite shows soft‐magnetic properties,as well as greater density adaptability and higher stability,compared to Fe_(3)O_(4).Moreover,the sedimentation testing provides information about the dispersion stability characteristics of MRF and shows a good correlation with high‐stability magnetorheological(MR)*** Fe_(3)O_(4)/copolymer‐based MRF with a tunable and instantaneous MR response is considered a promising material for smart control applications.
