Concrete is a porous material which has the ability to hold moisture stably inside. Since moisture is closely related to the deterioration of concrete structures, it is important to understand the moisture transfer in concrete in order to maintain the concrete structure appropriately. The electrical resistance method is one of non-destructive methods to investigate the moisture in concrete and the moisture transfer can be assessed with time by using one specimen. However, the electrical resistance may be affected by mineral admixtures in concrete. Although previous studies on the effects of mineral admixtures on the electrical resistance have been conducted, there are still many unclear points. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assess the applicability of the electrical resistance method to moisture transfer measurement in paste containing mineral admixtures by focusing on the moisture transfer in the drying process. The moisture transfer in the hardened cement paste using fly ash and blast furnace slag with water-to-binder ratios of 0.35 and 0.55 was investigated by the electrical resistance method. Stainless steel rods of 0.9 mm in diameter were placed at an interval of 4 mm in the specimen. The calibration test was also conducted to obtain the relationship between the electrical resistivity and the internal relative humidity of the specimen. The result showed that the specific resistance of the specimen containing mineral admixtures was higher than that of the specimen without mineral admixtures. It was observed that at the drying period of 70 days, the internal relative humidity at a depth of 4 mm from the exposed surface was almost the same as the surrounding relative humidity. It is possible to know the change in the internal relative humidity distribution in the cement paste using mineral admixtures during the drying process by performing the calibration test appropriately. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore P

The Architecture, engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry will benefit significantly from integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Extended Reality (XR) technologies. This paper explores the immense potential of AI-enhanced XR in tackling the industry challenges. While AI and XR are currently employed independently, this paper proposes a framework for their integration, aiming to optimize resource allocation, elevate safety protocols, and enhance project accuracy. Supported by a SWOT analysis, the study presents practical implications and proposed use cases showcasing the application of AI and XR in AEC projects. In response to students' over-engineered designs in a biological engineering capstone course, the authors formulated a teaching partnership among communication, engineering, and library science instructors. We outline service design methodology as the framework for a teaching intervention in our partnered courses and then provide examples of instruction stemming from our respective areas of expertise. Our goal is to show how our multidisciplinary teaching collaboration improves the engineering curriculum while intersecting several ABET student learning outcomes. This teaching team was particularly attentive to centering people or users to educate engineers in a way that deters user dissatisfaction and environmental waste. We include one team's coursework as a case study for how this unique pedagogical framework improves student learning and simultaneously forwards their awareness of sustainability in engineering. © 2024 SEFI 2024 - 52nd Annual Conference of the European Society for engineering, Proceedings: Educating Responsible Engineers. In recent years, the number of monitoring techniques developed for management of natural and engineered ground systems such as slopes, embankments, and retaining walls has significantly in-creased. The current study examines a slope stability problem near Kyrenia Castle, a 7th century castle located in Northern Cyprus. The landslide and accompanying reinforced concrete/stone walls, constructed for rehabilitation purposes, are monitored for a period of two years. The current condition of the site is back-analysed using the finite element method (FEM) as a conventional analysis. To detect changes over time, close-range photogrammetry (CRP) is employed using photographs taken with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to generate a dense cloud model. The results demonstrate the compatibility of the CRP with FEM, making the technique a viable and efficient option for various engineered and natural ground systems. CRP is proved fast, cost-effective, sustainable, and non-destructive. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Strength loss of sedimentary rocks due to water content changes is an important issue in the civil engineering field. Assuming disasters associated with rainfall and drying, it is important to identify unsaturated strength properties for gradually varying moisture contents. Water retention curves are needed to describe unsaturated strength properties. The high suction acting in the case of rock presents a challenge in identifying the suction. In particular, identifying the water retention drying path is difficult. This study propose a method to identify the drying paths using uniaxial compressive strength and tensile strength of Brazilian test. Uniaxial compression and Brazilian tests were performed on specimens with varying water content in the drying pass to investigate changes in their mechanical properties. Strength and stiffness were found to be approximately halved in the wet condition compared to the dry condition. Simplified Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria are also identified using uniaxial compressive and tensile strength. The cohesion decreases with increasing water content, while the angle of shear resistance is independent of changes in water content. Suction at each saturation level was back-analyzed using the detected cohesion and shear resistance angles to identify the water retention drying curve. The water retention drying curves identified were compared with the water retention wetting curve identified by another method to confirm the validity of the proposed method. ©2024 The Society of Materials Science, Japan.

This review demonstrates a comparative study of methylene blue (MB) dye removal from aqueous solutions using zero-valent iron (nZVI) and zero-valent aluminum (nZVAl) nanoparticles. The results indicated that at pH 6, nZVI dosage 10 g/L, initial MB concentration 10 mg/L, temperature 30 °C, and stirring rate 150 rpm, the equilibrium time was 30 min achieving a removal efficiency of approximately 100% for nZVI. While for nZVAl, the results indicated that at an initial MB concentration of 10 mg/L, pH 10, nZVAl dosage 1.0 g/L, stirring rate 200 rpm, and temperature 30 °C, the removal efficiency of approximately 99.0% was achieved within an equilibrium time of 90 min. Moreover, the adsorption data of MB fitted well to the Freundlich isotherm model (R2: 0.9358) and pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2: 0.9976) for adsorption by nZVI. Also, the isotherm adsorption data were best fitted by the Freundlich isotherm model (R2: 0.9569), while the kinetic data were well described by the pseudo-second-order model (R2: 0.9999) for adsorption by nZVAl. From the aforementioned results, it is clear that both nZVI and nZVAl showed very high efficiency in removing methylene blue from aqueous solutions with a slight difference in favor of nZVI. © 2023 American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Heat-resistant insulators are the core materials in fire doors and are directly related to people’s safety in a fire. Heverever, there needs to be a material that possesses heat resistance and insulation with reasonable production cost. To develop a core material for fire doors based on recycled paper, such as copy paper and linerboard, were impregnated with liquid sodium silicate and the effects of the sodium silicate content on the thermal properties of paper were investigated. It was observed that liquid soidum silicate can be used as a flame retardant when manufacturing fire door core materials. Imprenation of liquid sodium silicate delayed both glowing and burning temperatures along with an increased weight of residues after combustion over 750℃. Hence, it is possible to manufacture an incombustible material based on recycled papers by adding liquid sodium silicate and inorganic materials that do not themally decompose over 750℃. © 2022 Korean Technical Assoc. of the Pulp and Paper Industry. To widen the applications, cationic cellulose beads were synthesized by adding glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride (GTAC) to cellulose fibers dissolved in a mixture of tetraethylammonium hydroxide and urea at room temperature for cationic modification, and dropping the cationic cellulose solution into an acetic acid solution. Herein, the effects of the added GTAC amount on the properties of cationic cellulose soultion and cellulose beads were investigated. It was observed that increasing the amount of GTAC increased the viscosity and surface tension of the cationically modified cellulose solution and increased the particle size of the cellulose beads. Furthermore, the zeta potential of the cellulose beads can be controlled by modifying the GTAC amount. © 2022 Korean Technical Assoc. of the Pulp and Paper Industry. All rights reserved.

Potassium is a vital element for sustaining life on our planet, playing a crucial role in regulating fluid balance within cells and facilitating muscle contractions, including those of the heart. In plants, it governs the equilibrium of water absorption, serves as a fundamental component of structural tissues, and provides protection against pathogens, among other functions. Notably, a staggering 95% of the globally traded potassium is earmarked for fertilizer production. The deposits of this essential element are typically concentrated in specific geographical regions, often deep-seated, with distribution and logistics intricately tied to geopolitical considerations. A promising avenue for potassium recovery lies in exploring alternatives such as K-struvite precipitation and its combination with cellulose derived from vegetable waste. Cellulose, inherently containing potassium in its composition, makes it an attractive option. This study focuses on evaluating the mineralization of potassium using wood residues in the form of hygienic granules designed for animals and human urine, conducted at a temperature of 300 °C. The resulting mineral obtained was Sylvina, showcasing the potential for sustainable and efficient potassium retrieval. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

In Bali, the high volume of tourists significantly contributes to marine debris, particularly plastics, which threatens the ecological health of beaches and marine life, impacting both tourism and local livelihoods. Effective management is crucial to preserve Bali's natural beauty and sustainability. This study explores the factors influencing the willingness to participate (WTP) in marine debris management among urban communities in the Bali metropolitan area, Indonesia. Utilizing a binary logistic regression model, we examine the impact of key elements for effective marine debris management, risk awareness, learning performance, and higher monthly income and geographic differences between inland and coastal communities. The findings reveal that effective management practices significantly enhance community participation, highlighting the importance of transparency, accountability, and well-organized efforts. Educational initiatives also play a crucial role, with performance in risk awareness and learning showing a marginally significant positive effect on WTP. Conversely, higher income levels negatively influence participation, suggesting a preference for institutional funding over personal contributions. Geographic differences indicate that coastal communities are more inclined to participate than inland communities. These insights provide valuable guidance for policymakers and practitioners in developing strategies to mobilize volunteers, enhance urban resilience, and promote social well-being. By implementing effective management practices, comprehensive educational programs, tailored engagement strategies, and fostering partnerships, urban communities in Bali can become more resilient and actively address environmental challenges. © 2024 The Authors
