environmental sustainability criteria in the multi-oriented shipbuilding industry in Indonesia

Preliminary studies have highlighted the potential of Indonesia's geographical, suprastructural, and infrastructural conditions to develop a strong shipbuilding industry, which is crucial for the success of the world maritime axis program and sea toll. However, despite high expectations, the industry faces challenges that threaten business sustainability, leading to bankruptcies. To assess business sustainability, it is essential to establish criteria and sub-criteria, which previous studies have overlooked, focusing only on technical and economic factors. Therefore, this research generally aims to develop and analyze environmentally friendly sustainable criteria in the multi-oriented shipyard industry so that it develops in accordance with the vision, mission, goals and strategies. The criteria development process involves identifying and reviewing relevant articles, classifying and refining the criteria, conducting expert validity testing, Pearson Product Moment validity testing, and reliability testing using the Alpha (Cronbach) method. The expert validity testing indicates that ‘people' received the highest average score of 4.67 among the criteria, and ‘infrastructure' scored the highest in the sub-criteria, with a score of 4.75. The validity testing with the Pearson Product Moment method demonstrates that the criteria and sub-criteria are valid and the reliability of 32 sub-criteria indicating their influence on promoting multi-oriented and environmentally sustainable shipbuilding industries. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Impact of Building Design and Operating Strategies on Urban Heat Island Effects Part II: Sensitivity Analysis

This study investigates the mutual thermal interactions between buildings and the microclimate within urban area centers. Buildings are the primary energy consumers in cities, and one of the main causes of the urban heat island (UHI) formation. In this article, a flexible simulation environment is developed and used to model the mutual thermal interactions between building energy systems and their urban surroundings in Phoenix, AZ, characterized by its hot climate. The impacts of various operating strategies for both commercial and residential buildings are assessed on both UHI effects and energy consumption. Specifically, the study evaluates the impacts of indoor temperature settings, precooling strategies, and air infiltration/exfiltration rates. It has been found that heat rejected by air conditioning systems significantly impacts UHI formation in urban centers located in hot climates. Specifically, commercial buildings were found to cause more UHI effects than residential buildings due to higher cooling loads. The impacts of heat rejected from heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are found to be more dominant than that from air exfiltration on the microclimate of urban centers. For urban center made up of commercial buildings with a street aspect ratio of 2, heat from air exfiltration is estimated to be as low as 10% of the heat rejected by HVAC systems. Fruits,vegetables,and dairy products are typically the primary sources of household food ***,anaerobic digestion is the most used bioprocess for the treatment of food waste with concomitant generation of ***,to achieve a circular carbon economy,the organics in food waste should be converted to new chemicals with higher value than *** we demonstrate the feasibility of medium-chain carboxylic acid(MCCA)production from expired dairy and beverage waste via a chain elongation platform mediated by *** a two-stage fermentation process,the first stage with optimized operational conditions,including varying temperatures and organic loading rates,transformed expired dairy and beverage waste into lactate at a concentration higher than 900 mM C at 43℃.This lactate was then used to produce>500 mM C caproate and>300 mM C butyrate via microbial chain ***,lactate-producing microbes such as Lactobacillus and Lacticaseibacillus were regulated by temperature and could be highly enriched under mesophilic conditions in the firststage *** the second-stage chain elongation reactor,the dominating microbes were primarily from the genera Megasphaera and Caproiciproducens,shaped by varying feed and inoculum *** network analysis revealed positive correlations among species from the genera Caproiciproducens,Ruminococcus,and CAG-352,as well as Megasphaera,Bacteroides,and Solobacterium,indicating strong microbial interactions that enhance caproate *** findings suggest that producing MCCAs from expired dairy and beverage waste via lactate-mediated chain elongation is a viable method for sustainable waste management and could serve as a chemical production platform in the context of building a circular bioeconomy.

Designing a building material with high fire resistance is crucial for minimizing the impact of catastrophic fire. Geopolymer, a new type of binder synthesized by the reaction of aluminosilicate sources with an alkaline solution, has been extensively studied as it offers comparable or even high durability when compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The concentration of the alkaline solution is one of the important factors that affect the durability;however, there is very little data on the heat resistance of geopolymer activated with potassium hydroxide. Thus, this study aims to investigate the effect of molarity of potassium hydroxide on the heat resistance of fly ash-slag blended geopolymer paste. The potassium hydroxide (10, 12, and 14 M) and sodium silicate solutions were prepared as activator solutions. The initial heat curing at 70 ºC for 24 h was applied. In addition, an OPC specimen was also prepared for comparison. After curing for 28 days, some specimens were exposed to high temperatures (500, 750, and 950 ºC). The compressive strength of unexposed and exposed geopolymer and OPC paste specimens was measured. The results showed that the increase of molarity of potassium hydroxide solution increased the heat resistance of geopolymer in terms of retained compressive strength. Moreover, the geopolymer specimens could maintain higher compressive strength than that of OPC paste when exposed to high temperatures up to 950 ºC. This is attributed to the mineral composition of geopolymer, which is different from OPC paste, as studied by X-ray diffraction analysis. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

A Cradle-to-Cradle Novel Approach for Wastewater Management in Sustainable Urban Communities

Water, a valuable resource to human lives, is being abused and driven to scarcity. This scarcity is leading some countries and areas to face difficulty in accessing drinking water. As the UN recently stated “by 2050 water shortages and harder access will be reached by around 2/3^rd of the world total population” [1], thus, there is a high need to treat and reuse wastewater for domestic purposes, which will lead to less reliance on fresh water as an initial water source. Greywater—defined as the water produced in domestic houses including sinks and bathroom showers, and excluding any blackwater mix which is collected from toilets—is a type of wastewater. Greywater accounts for up to 75% of the daily water produced [2] while it has fewer contaminants when compared to blackwater. This makes greywater a focal point for treatment, and reusing to conserve fresh water and approach net zero water concept. Even though the definition of greywater is the same globally, its criteria can differ from one country to another, from one building to another, or even from the same person’s usage along the day. Accordingly, several treatment methods evolved over years aiming at treating the produced greywater for reuse mainly in irrigation and toilet flushing. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate a novel net zero wastewater approach applying cradle-to-cradle concept for urban communities;while also proposing a sustainable greywater treatment technique that is environmentally friendly, cost-effective and socially acceptable.

Despite various attempts throughout past decades to deal with concurrent delays in construction project schedules, they continue to be a vexing issue that has eluded an unambiguous solution. Prior studies have resorted to the prime contract, which only binds general contractor and owner, cannot be proven to be fair, and may even be biased. Therefore, this paper adopts a concept from cooperative game theory, the Shapley value, which apportions profits (which project participants seek to maximize). Creatively applying it to liquidated damages (which they seek to minimize), the model uses all participants' actual finish dates as input to gain percentage shares of liquidated damages as output. Analyzing all possible coalitions among participants and assigning weights comprehensively assesses their marginal contributions to the project finish date. This generalized view of participants explicitly includes subcontractors, whom prior approaches typically ignored. An example demonstrates how the model also implies an early completion bonus. This yields compelling implications for real-world incentives that can be cast into future contract clauses. © ASCE.

This paper presents recent findings from an ongoing research study to evaluate the effectiveness of a geosynthetic made from recycled plastic for stabilizing unpaved roads. In the state of Iowa, USA, two full-scale test sections were constructed: one stabilized with a newly developed composite geosynthetic, and the other serving as a control. This innovative geocomposite combines a geogrid made from recycled plastic and a nonwoven geotextile. Following construction, these unpaved test sections were exposed to real traffic loads that included trucks and implements of husbandry (farm equipment). The performance of reinforced unpaved roads was assessed using Lightweight Deflectometer (LWD) tests and field California Bearing Ratio (CBR) data collected using a clegg impact soil tester (CIST). The results indicated that unpaved roads stabilized with the geocomposite significantly reduced permanent deformation during the evaluation period. These findings suggest good potential of the geocomposite for enhancing unpaved road performance, pending further validation through continuous monitoring and evaluation of the test sections over longer periods. © ASCE.

Fluorinated Functional Units for Li+ Flux Homogenization in Silica Framework-Based Zwitterionic Single Ion Conductors for Stable Lithium Metal Batteries

Progress in commercializing solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) for lithium metal batteries (LMBs) has been impeded by challenges, like concentration polarization, non-uniform Li+ flux, and an unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI), which contribute to dendrite formation. To address these issues, silica framework (SF)-based single-ion conductors are proposed, featuring a unique solvation channel composed of a fluorinated segment, a high-dipole zwitterion, and a rotation-motion-driven ion-hopping medium. This design promotes low resistance at the cathode/electrode interface, suppresses dendrite growth at the anode/electrolyte interface, and maintains a uniform Li+ flux. This results show that continuous ion channels within a robust framework enhance Li-ion dissociation and transport, achieving high ionic conductivity (σDC = 8.8 × 10−4 S cm−1), a modulus of 0.9 GPa, a high lithium transference number (≈0.83), and an extended electrochemical stability window (up to 5.2 V) at 25 °C. This design fosters the formation of a hybrid organic/inorganic SEI layer composed of Li2CO3, LiF, and Li2O, enabling ultra-stable Li plating/stripping for over 4000 h at 0.1 mA cm−2. Furthermore, the full cells demonstrate excellent rate performance and long-term cycling stability and capacity retention (81% for Li||LFP and 86% for Li||NCM811 after 400 cycles at 1 C) and high coulombic efficiency, offering a promising strategy to stable LMBs. © 2025 The Author(s). Ion-Anchoring Dipole-Integrated Composite Elastomer Electrolyte and Cathode for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries via Multiple-Bridge engineering

Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) hold significant potential for advancing lithium metal batteries (LMBs) by enhancing safety through the replacement of liquid electrolytes. However, challenges such as low ionic conductivity, limited electrochemical stability, and poor electrolyte/electrode interface compatibility hinder the development of high-energy-density LMBs. Herein, a strategy for designing SSEs is proposed using multiple-bridge engineered composite elastomer electrolytes (CEEs) that incorporate ion-rotating dipole interactions, ion-anchoring dipole interactions, and hydrogen bonding, along with a CEE-based composite elastomer cathode (CEC). This design combines a volume-adaptive elastomer matrix, a high-Li+ conducting deep eutectic electrolyte, and robust nanowires. The resultant CEE exhibits high ionic conductivity (1.7 × 10−3 S cm−1), a lithium transference number of 0.72, and a wide electrochemical stability window (up to 4.9 V) at 298 K. The engineered uniform Li+ flux also promotes stable Li plating/stripping for over 900 h at 0.1 mA cm−2. Furthermore, the LFP-based CEC|CEE|Li full cells deliver a reversible capacity of 133 mAh g−1 with 95% retention after 300 cycles in coin cells, and 129 mAh g−1 with 96% retention after 250 cycles in pouch cells at 1 C. This strategy presents a promising approach for designing solid-state polymer electrolytes to extend the lifespan of high-energy-density LMBs. © 2025 Wiley-VCH GmbH.
