Effective spatio-temporal measurements of water surface elevation (water waves) in laboratory experiments are essential for scientific and engineering research. Existing techniques are often cumbersome, computationally heavy and generally suffer from limited wavenumber/frequency response. To address these challenges a novel method was developed, using polarization filter equipped camera as the main sensor and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms for data processing [1,2]. The developed method training and evaluation was based on in-house made supervised dataset. Here we present this supervised dataset of polarimetric images of the water surface coupled with the water surface elevation measurements made by a linear array of resistance-type wave gauges (WG). The water waves were mechanically generated in a laboratory waves basin, and the polarimetric images were captured under an artificial light source. Meticulous camera and WGs calibration and instruments synchronization supported high spatio-temporal resolution. The data set covers several wavefield conditions, from simple monochromatic wave trains of various steepness, to irregular wavefield of JONSWAP prescribed spectral shape and several wave breaking scenarios. Characterization of Ureolysis and Microbially Induced Calcium Carbonate Precipitation Under Different Incubation and Reaction Conditions

This study investigates the ureolysis and microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) characteristics of Sporosarcina pasteurii and Lysinibacillus sphaericus under varying incubation and reaction conditions. A series of batch MICP experiments were conducted to assess the effects of incubation duration and pH, bacterial cell density, and reagent (i.e., urea and calcium ion) concentrations on ureolysis and CaCO3 precipitation characteristics. The findings indicate that both bacteria exhibit higher urease activity after 24 hours of incubation compared to 48 hours, regardless of incubation pH. S. pasteurii exhibits maximum specific urease activity at an alkaline pH (pH 9.0), whereas L. sphaericus reaches peak activity at a neutral pH (pH 7.2). Across six incubation conditions for each bacterium, S. pasteurii exhibits greater sensitivity in specific urease activity, while L. sphaericus maintains a more consistent ureolysis performance. In terms of cell density, a lower OD600 (~0.1) enhances specific urease activity and early-stage mineralization efficiency, whereas a higher OD600 (~1.0) accelerates overall CaCO3 precipitation, enhances terminal-stage mineralization efficiency, and promotes the prolonged presence of vaterite. High reagent concentrations (1.0 and 1.5 M) enhance specific urease activity and CaCO3 precipitation rates and lead to over 93% of vaterite formation, while low reagent concentration (0.3 M) favors calcite-dominant precipitation over time. These findings provide insights into evaluating and optimizing MICP performance under varying incubation and reaction conditions. © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A simple one-step solvothermal approach has been adopted for the synthesis of SnS2. SEM shows hierarchically SnS2 with petal-like 3-dimensional layer structures because of this process. In this investigation, the as-prepared electrode material have an excellent specific capacitance of 721F g−1 at 1 mVs−1, indicating extraordinary performance. The improved electrochemical performance is because to unique ultrathin petal discrete structure, which provides increased electrolyte/electrode interface, high active sites, rapid ion/electron transfer, and short diffusion distances. A manufactured symmetric solid-state supercapacitor (SSC) device also has a large capacity to operate commercial LEDs, which allows for the assessment of its practical applicability in device-level application. According to the findings of this work, suitably layered 3D SnS2 electrode materials could be a promising route for the development of environmentally friendly energy storage applications. © 2022

Nutrient subsidy of methane-oxidising bacteria (MOB), an alternative basal resource, to plankton communities through pelagic-benthic coupling is expected to alter carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratios and biomass of zooplankton, and affect biological processes in aquatic food webs. Previous studies indicate that most MOB nutrient subsidies to zooplankton are focused largely on C subsidies;nevertheless, considering that N is important to zooplankton and phytoplankton growth, a better understanding of MOB N subsidies to plankton communities is needed. We examined changes in nutrients, phytoplankton mass-specific productivity, MOB reliance, C/N ratios and biomass of zooplankton between summer stratification and winter mixing periods based on in situ investigation in a subtropical deep oligotrophic freshwater ecosystem during 2010–2014. The results revealed that with increasing reliance on MOB during the winter mixing period, zooplankton C/N ratios decreased and had a significantly nonlinearly inverse relationship with zooplankton biomass. The negative relationship between zooplankton biomass and phytoplankton mass-specific productivity was further observed in synchronous time. The profundal MOB enhanced pelagic-profundal coupling and served as an alternative N support for pelagic plankton food webs during the winter and/or less productive seasons, adding to greater understanding of the role of methanotrophs in aquatic food webs. © 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Previous studies reported that the strength reduction in fly ash concrete (FAC) can be improved by internal curing with roof-tile waste aggregate (RWA). However, how much the internal curing by RWA improved the compressive strength of FAC was different, and there was no clear explanation on it. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of the internal curing in the FAC by examining the range of the internal curing effect with RWA in the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) around coarse aggregate. Paste and concrete specimens in which part of cement was replaced with fly ash were prepared. For paste specimens, one aggregate particle was placed in the center of the specimen. Vickers hardness around the aggregate in the paste specimen and the compressive strength of the concrete specimen were investigated. As a result, the range of Vickers hardness improvement around RWA changed depending on the replacement ratio of fly ash. This indicates that the internal curing effect differs depending on the mixture proportion of paste matrix such as the replacement ratio of fly ash. Furthermore, it was observed that the compressive strength of concrete increased as the thickness of ITZ around RWA decreased. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Molecular Dynamics Study of Nanoparticle Collision with a Surface — Implication to Nanoparticle Filtration

Collision dynamics of nanoparticles with a surface was studied by classical molecular dynamics simulations. Silver, nickel and silica were selected as the particle materials, and silver as the surface material. Particle sizes ranged approximately from 0.5 to 2 nm. The results indicate that particles with thermal energy at room temperature do not bounce off a surface, even when a very weak interaction potential between the particles and the surface is assumed. The loss mechanisms of the center-of-mass energy of nanoparticles colliding with a surface were also investigated. The findings indicate that energy losses to the surface and the rotational degree of freedom are important. The loss to the surface is significant when a harder particle hits a softer surface. This is because the center-of-mass energy is mainly transferred to the surface as elastic energy, and the energy is not effectively transferred back to the particle. Non-spherical silica particles were found to lose more energy than the other types of particles. This phenomenon is due to a large energy transfer to the rotational degree of the freedom upon collision.

Bakanae disease,caused by Fusarium fujikuroi,poses a significant threat to rice production and has been observed in most rice-growing *** disease symptoms caused by different pathogens may vary,including elongated and weak stems,slender and yellow leaves,and dwarfism,as *** disease is likely to cause necrosis of diseased seedlings,and it may cause a large area of infection in the field through the transmission of ***,early disease surveillance plays a crucial role in securing rice *** monitoring methods are both time-consuming and labor-intensive and cannot be broadly *** this study,a combination of hyperspectral imaging technology and deep learning algorithms were used to achieve in situ detection of rice seedlings infected with bakanae *** data were obtained on the 9th,15th,and 21st day after rice infection to explore the physiological and biochemical performance,which helps to deepen the research on the disease *** data were obtained over these same periods of infection,and a deep learning model,named Rice Bakanae Disease-Visual Geometry Group(RBD-VGG),was established by leveraging hyperspectral imaging technology and deep learning *** on this model,an average accuracy of 92.2%was achieved on the 21st day of *** also achieved an accuracy of 79.4%as early as the 9th *** characteristic wavelengths were extracted to increase the feasibility of using portable spectral equipment for field ***,the model offers an efficient and non-destructive surveillance methodology for monitoring bakanae disease,thereby providing an efficient avenue for disease prevention and control.

Glutaraldehyde(GTA) crosslinking is commonly used to improve the thermal stability and mechanical strength of collagen casings. The aim of this research was to determine the optimal pH of the crosslinking between GTA and collagen as well as the crosslinking mechanisms. The weakly alkaline environment could facilitate the generation of GTA polymerization through the rapid generation of -C=C-C=O and -N=C-C=C- conjugated structures, and enhance the crosslinking reaction of GTA polymers with collagen amino groups. In the pH range of 8–10, the fibril diameter and d-space value declined significantly in the self-assembled collagen fibril-GTA system. Meanwhile, collagen casing films crosslinked with GTA in weakly alkaline conditions exhibited higher mechanical strength and thermal stability. These results suggest that the crosslinking of collagen casings and GTA can be improved by adjusting the pH. Possible crosslinking mechanisms related to the formation of conjugated long chains have also been proposed. This study could provide guidance on the appropriate use of GTA in the production process of collagen casings.

Evaluating the impact of fertilizer and crop prices on phosphorus concentrations in Great Lakes watersheds

Crop and input prices affect agricultural production and water pollution. Fertilizer prices fluctuated over the past two decades, recently increasing substantially. Corn prices also increased after authorization of the Renewable Fuel Standard. This paper estimates the effect of fertilizer and corn prices on total phosphorus (TP) and dissolved phosphorus (DP) concentrations across 226 Great Lakes region watersheds. Findings indicate that a 10% rise in fertilizer prices reduces TP by 3% and DP by 6.9%. Counterfactual analysis shows that without recent fertilizer price hikes, nutrient concentrations would be higher, underscoring the impact of crop and input prices on phosphorus pollution.
