Recognizing that urban storm water is a significant source of water quality impairment, federal and state water pollution control regulations have been implemented requiring industrial facilities to take steps to monitor and minimize the exposure of storm water runoff to pollutant from their operations. In the seven years since the regulations were implemented, approximately 9080 California facilities have taken at least the initial step to comply by self-identifying and seeking coverage under the general permit program. To achieve full compliance with the regulations a facility must first evaluate operations and exposures followed by the development and implementation of a site-specific pollution prevention and management plan plan. This research describes the California population that has sought general permit coverage and characterizes activities and physical factors that may predict a site's propensity to contribute pollutants to storm water. Eight SIC codes were found to represent 54 percent of all permittees. Direct observations established that while the majority of sites were highly impervious and conduct more that one regulated activity, the intensity of such exposed activity and housekeeping varied substantially. Twenty-eight percent of complying facilities were found to occupy sites of one acre or less. These findings raise questions about whether the general permit applied equally to all is the appropriate allocation of resources to reduce pollutant load. Copyright ASCE 2004.

The effectiveness of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling in replicating wind tunnel measurements of wind flow in forests was analysed. The three dimensional numerical wind tunnel was set up with parameters more similar to those in the wind tunnel. The mesh generated throughout the domain for both the two and three dimensional simulations were non-conformal. Preliminary analysis of the three dimensional simulations, which do not have porous tree canopies, show better agreement to wind tunnel measurements than two dimensional simulations.

This paper evaluated the presentknowledge of taste and problems in drinkingwater supplies in the form of a ``Taste and OdorWheel'' which organises the relationshipsbetween specific taste and odor problems andtheir causes. The Flavor Profile Analysis (FPA)method enabled the development of the odordescriptors on the wheel. The abilities andshort-comings of the FPA method for odorevaluation by taste and odor panels wereevaluated. The present state of development oftaste and odor standards for drinking water wasthen discussed.

We demonstrate the facile fabrication of crack-free nanostructured crystalline titania into microsystems. Titania layers were formed by reacting Ti thin films, deposited by evaporation and sputtering, with aqueous H2O2. Cracks were observed in titania layers formed on blanket Ti films but absent on arrays of patterned Ti pads below a threshold dimension. Nanostructured titania formed from sputtered and evaporated Ti films consists of aligned fibrous and sponge-like nanoporous morphologies, respectively. Rat fibroblasts L-cells cultured on these titania fibers remain viable up to 3 days. These observations demonstrate the feasibility of this technique to integrate nanostructured titania into Nano|Micro-Electromechanical systems (N|MEMS) devices.

North Jordan Valley (NJV) is a narrow rift valley that extends from lake Tiberius in the north to the Dead Sea in the south. It follows the River Jordan and contains the most fertile lands in Jordan. With a population around 140,000, primarily working in agriculture, NJV is Jordan’s premier agricultural production area. NJV is an ecosystem that is stressed both naturally and by human activities. Limited precipitation and very hot summer seasons are stresses that are inherent parts of the ecosystem itself. However, human activities like agriculture, poor sanitation, and tourism produce health risks to the people through the pollution and degradation of natural resources. The area also faces several socioeconomic problems such as poverty, large family size, and unemployment. In NJV, women typically work at home as housewives taking care of large families and are engaged in agricultural activities through which they are exposed, along with men and children, to high temperature and high concentration of pesticides. This article presents the findings of a Participatory Rapid Appraisal (PRA) study that focused on assessing local communities’ perception and awareness of the linkages between disruption of the ecosystem and prevailing public health problems. From an academic point of view, one of the key challenges of implementing ecosystem approaches to human health is the incorporation of various stakeholders as full partners throughout the research process rather than as contributors to a research designed from the sole perspective and interests of the academic research team. This study was conceptualized as a preliminary study to guide and inform the design of a larger research study on health and environment linkages in the NJV. The process was considered key for ensuring that research questions would reflect and build upon the priorities of multiple stakeholders, including community members, and would involve them in the design of the research. In addition to the succe

A new semi-automatic processing system for classification of airborne laser scanner cloud points is developed. To mitigate the difficulty caused by the complex distribution of objects on earth's surface, wavelet was adopted in size-based clustering of laser points. A hybrid method of processing laser scanner data in both grid and raw formats was also adopted to speed up the processing time and adjust the smoothing effect of interpolation. The processing focused on processing the data acquired over urban area. This paper presents and explains the components of the system using the test data acquired over Shinjuku area, Tokyo, Japan.
