We combined the advection-dispersion-reaction equation, peak concentration estimates based on a meta-analysis of hundreds of tracer injections in streams and rivers, and mass balances in a dynamic Excel Workbook to 1) help users decide how much tracer mass should be added to achieve dynamic concentration ranges that reduce known issues associated with breakthrough curve tail truncation, and 2) generate tables and graphs that can be used to plan logistics. Our Tracer Injection Planning Tool, TIPT, handles instantaneous and continuous tracer injections, assumes steady-state and uniform flow conditions, and first-order decay or production. While those assumptions do not strictly apply to natural streams, they simplify the planning of tracer injections with a predictive ability disproportionally favorable with respect to the few inputs required. We demonstrate the use of TIPT through two case studies, i.e., a continuous injection in a 2nd order stream and an instantaneous injection in a 7th order stream. © 2022, The Authors. The production of plastic has exponentially increased in recent years, leading to the release of millions of tons of plastic waste into the environment annually. This waste can break down into smaller micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) that are toxic and reactive to life forms, including humans. MNPs are particularly concerning for marine biologists and environmental scientists due to their toxic impacts on aquatic organisms, including algae, which are the foundation of the food chain. The review provides a comprehensive overview of the (eco)toxicity assessment of MNPs on aquatic algal communities, highlighting the novel insights gained into the ecotoxicity of various MNPs on algae and the associated health risks for aquatic ecosystems, food chains, and humans. This article also discusses current challenges and future research opportunities to address these challenges, making it a valuable contribution to the field of environmental science. Overall, this work is one of the first efforts to comprehensively assess the effects of MNPs on aquatic algae, emphasizing the significant risks that MNPs pose to essential ecosystems and human health. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Recovering valuable elements such as lithium (Li) from seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) brine is crucial for building a sustainable economy due to its high storage density, making it an ideal material for energy storage. In this study, a novel hybrid system that combines direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) and electrochemical switched ion exchange (ESIX) was designed to achieve simultaneous SWRO brine enrichment and Li recovery. The DCMD process concentrated the SWRO brine using electrospun nanofiber membranes (ENMs) made of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), with the incorporation of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanoparticles enhancing the morphological, thermal, and mechanical stability of the PVDF ENMs. The water contact angle (WCA) of the 1-rGO/PVDF ENM was 142.08°, indicating an improved hydrophobic property that resulted in the recovery of 12% freshwater from simulated SWRO brine and a 2.4-fold increase in Li+ concentration. The 1-rGO/PVDF ENM exhibited stable performance, with an 11% reduction in WCA after 15 hours of brine concentration. In the hybrid operation, a Li-selective LiAlO2 electrode, coupled with an activated carbon counter electrode, demonstrated remarkable Li recovery for Li capture solutions enriched by the rGO-PVDF membrane in the DCMD step. Compared to the Li concentration in the DCMD feed, sequential Li capture and release cycles recovered 91.8% of Li, highlighting the critical role of the hybrid mode operation in concentrating Li from simulated brine solutions. © 2023, The Authors. Rare earth elements (REEs) are exploited for global use in manufacturing. Such activities result in their release into the environment and the transformation into more stable phosphate deposition. The objective of this study was to evaluate molecular and behavioral changes of zebrafish exposed to the synthesized terbium phosphate (TbPO4) at concentrations of 10, 20, and 50 mg/L and to determine its potential for neurotoxicity. Metabolomics related to neurotransmitters, and assessment of transcripts and proteins were conducted to uncover the molecular mechanisms underlying TbPO4 with emphasis on neurotransmitter systems. Exposure to 20 mg/L TbPO4 induced larval hyperactivity and perturbed the cholinergic system in zebrafish. Based on metabolomics related to neurotransmitters, dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT), and many of their precursors and metabolites were decreased in abundance by TbPO4. In addition, the expression levels of transcripts related to the synthesis, transport, receptor binding, and metabolism of DA and 5-HT were analyzed at the mRNA and protein levels. Transcript and protein levels for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate-limiting enzyme for DA synthesis, were down-regulated in larval fish. Monoamine oxidase (MAO), an enzyme that catabolizes monoamines DA and 5-HT, was also reduced in mRNA abundance. We hypothesize that DA synthesis and monoamine metabolism are associated with behavioral alterations. This study elucidates putative mechanisms and exposure risks to wildlife and humans by characterizing phosphatic REE-induced neurotoxicity in developing zebrafish. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Defects in materials significantly alter their electronic and structural properties, which affect the performance of electronic devices, structural alloys, and functional materials. However, calculating all the possible defects in complex materials with conventional Density Functional Theory (DFT) can be computationally prohibitive. To enhance the efficiency of these calculations, we interfaced Density Functional Tight Binding (DFTB) with the Clusters Approach to Statistical Mechanics (CASM) software package for the first time to calculate formation energies and convex hulls. Using SiC and ZnO as representative examples, we show that DFTB gives accurate results and can be a computationally cheaper alternative to DFT. Our DFTB+CASM implementation allows for an efficient exploration (up to an order of magnitude faster than DFT) of formation energies and convex hulls, which researchers can use to probe other complex systems. © 2022, The Authors. NOx is a universal term for nitrogen oxide relevant to air pollution namely nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (N2). Mostly NOx is generated from the anthropogenic activities. Currently photo-catalysis is an emerging tool used for the reduction of air pollutants which helps to improve the air quality. In this experimental work Bi2S3 doped into g-C3N4 used as catalyst and the resulting products were characterized such as XRD, FTIR, EDS. Bi2S3@g-C3N4 can harvest the solar light due to narrow band gap which improve electron hole pair and generated hydroxyl and superoxide radicals. Furthermore, Bi2S3@g-C3N4 increased the photo-oxidation efficiency of the transformation from NOx to NO3. In short, this study provides accomplished and effective approach to prepare Bi2S3@g-C3N4 photocatalysts for NOx degradation under solar light. © 2021 IEEE.

Background: Tetracycline is an emerging contaminant in water reservoirs, causing undesirable influences on human society. The promising usage of magnetic biochar (MBC) derived from watermelon rind has been explored in the adsorption of various contaminants owing to its high specific surface area and separability;however, the temperature-dependent changes of MBC and its sorption ability toward antibiotics have not been widely examined. Method: Tunable MBCs could be synthesized via simple pyrolysis of watermelon rind impregnated with FeCl3 at different temperatures (700–900 °C). The as-synthesized MBCs were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), an elemental analyzer, N2 adsorption/desorption, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). Then Tetracycline, an emerging contaminant in water reservoirs, was employed as the target contaminant, while adsorption kinetics, isotherm, the effect of pH, and reusability were investigated. Significant findings: The tunability of as-synthesized MBCs could be observed by their distinct changes in structural characteristics when varying pyrolysis temperature. MBC synthesized at 900 °C (MBC900) possessed a high-specific surface area (401 m2.g−1) and saturation magnetization (55.29 emu.g−1), resulting in a greater amount of sorption sites. Tetracycline adsorption by MBCs followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and fitted well with the Freundlich model. MBC900 is an excellent adsorbent with a maximum adsorption capacity of 77.6 mg.g−1 and could be used for at least five cycles with an insignificant decrease in the adsorption capacity. © 2024 Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers

Public perception of the fulfillment of clean water needs will depend on a number of factors, including social, economic, cultural and community habits. This research was conducted in Nekmese Village in Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. This village is one of the villages that has not received good clean water services, even though this village has sufficient availability of clean water throughout the season. This study aims to examine the perception of rural communities in the provision of sustainable clean water. Data collection is done by observation and survey by interview and questionnaire. The results showed that 41% of respondents felt they were insufficient in providing clean water, while the other 59% felt they were insufficient. This fact is supported by the data on the use of clean water on average by 40 Lpcd. For the sustainability of clean water supply, the results of the study show positive perceptions from the community, but contrary to wasteful measures in water use, maintenance of water sources and participation in water supply in his village. This could be due to the low level of public education, and lack of hearing about information about clean water. The research recommends increasing the awareness and participation of the community in the provision of sustainable clean water. © 2020 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Accurate flow prediction is crucial in hydrological modeling, influenced by various rainfall datasets, autocalibration methods, and performance indices. This study examines the combined effect of three satellite precipitation products (SPPs) — ERA-5, gridMET, and GPM IMERG — and three autocalibration techniques — DDS, GLUE, and LHS — on SWAT+ river flow prediction using three evaluation metrics — NSE, KGE, and R² — for the Cape Fear and Tar-Pamlico watersheds in North Carolina. Key findings include: (1) Five SWAT+ parameters (cn2, revap_co, flo_min, revap_min, awc) were sensitive across all SPPs and watersheds. (2) Rainfall products significantly impacted simulated river flow more than optimization techniques. (3) GPM IMERG outperformed other SPPs, followed by ERA-5 and gridMET. (4) NSE was more sensitive to SPPs and calibration techniques compared to KGE and R². (5) SWAT+ underperformed in predicting base flow for groundwater-driven watersheds. (6) Optimization techniques can improve flow simulations even for SPPs that are poorly correlated with gauge rainfall data. Overall, our findings suggest that the GPM IMERG rainfall dataset, combined with the GLUE optimization technique, provides the most effective approach for optimal flow simulations. The results from this study will help hydrological modelers choose an optimal combination of rainfall dataset, autocalibration technique, and performance index depending on watershed characteristics. © 2024, The Authors.
