Effects of Initial and Boundary Conditions on Heavy Rainfall Simulation over the Yellow Sea and the Korean Peninsula:Comparison of ECMWF and NCEP Analysis Data Effects and Verification with Dropsonde Observation

This study evaluated the simulation performance of mesoscale convective system(MCS)-induced precipitation,focusing on three selected cases that originated from the Yellow Sea and propagated toward the Korean *** evaluation was conducted for the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(ECMWF)and National Centers for environmental Prediction(NCEP)analysis data,as well as the simulation result using them as initial and lateral boundary conditions for the Weather Research and Forecasting ***,temperature and humidity profiles from 3D dropsonde observations from the National Center for Meteorological science of the Korea Meteorological Administration served as validation *** showed that the ECMWF analysis consistently had smaller errors compared to the NCEP analysis,which exhibited a cold and dry bias in the lower levels below 850 *** model,in terms of the precipitation simulations,particularly for high-intensity precipitation over the Yellow Sea,demonstrated higher accuracy when applying ECMWF analysis data as the initial *** advantage also positively influenced the simulation of rainfall events on the Korean Peninsula by reasonably inducing convective-favorable thermodynamic features(i.e.,warm and humid lower-level atmosphere)over the Yellow *** conclusion,this study provides specific information about two global analysis datasets and their impacts on MCS-induced heavy rainfall simulation by employing dropsonde observation ***,it suggests the need to enhance the initial field for MCS-induced heavy rainfall simulation and the applicability of assimilating dropsonde data for this purpose in the future.

Fluorinated Functional Units for Li+ Flux Homogenization in Silica Framework-Based Zwitterionic Single Ion Conductors for Stable Lithium Metal Batteries

Progress in commercializing solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) for lithium metal batteries (LMBs) has been impeded by challenges, like concentration polarization, non-uniform Li+ flux, and an unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI), which contribute to dendrite formation. To address these issues, silica framework (SF)-based single-ion conductors are proposed, featuring a unique solvation channel composed of a fluorinated segment, a high-dipole zwitterion, and a rotation-motion-driven ion-hopping medium. This design promotes low resistance at the cathode/electrode interface, suppresses dendrite growth at the anode/electrolyte interface, and maintains a uniform Li+ flux. This results show that continuous ion channels within a robust framework enhance Li-ion dissociation and transport, achieving high ionic conductivity (σDC = 8.8 × 10−4 S cm−1), a modulus of 0.9 GPa, a high lithium transference number (≈0.83), and an extended electrochemical stability window (up to 5.2 V) at 25 °C. This design fosters the formation of a hybrid organic/inorganic SEI layer composed of Li2CO3, LiF, and Li2O, enabling ultra-stable Li plating/stripping for over 4000 h at 0.1 mA cm−2. Furthermore, the full cells demonstrate excellent rate performance and long-term cycling stability and capacity retention (81% for Li||LFP and 86% for Li||NCM811 after 400 cycles at 1 C) and high coulombic efficiency, offering a promising strategy to stable LMBs. © 2025 The Author(s). Ion-Anchoring Dipole-Integrated Composite Elastomer Electrolyte and Cathode for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries via Multiple-Bridge engineering

Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) hold significant potential for advancing lithium metal batteries (LMBs) by enhancing safety through the replacement of liquid electrolytes. However, challenges such as low ionic conductivity, limited electrochemical stability, and poor electrolyte/electrode interface compatibility hinder the development of high-energy-density LMBs. Herein, a strategy for designing SSEs is proposed using multiple-bridge engineered composite elastomer electrolytes (CEEs) that incorporate ion-rotating dipole interactions, ion-anchoring dipole interactions, and hydrogen bonding, along with a CEE-based composite elastomer cathode (CEC). This design combines a volume-adaptive elastomer matrix, a high-Li+ conducting deep eutectic electrolyte, and robust nanowires. The resultant CEE exhibits high ionic conductivity (1.7 × 10−3 S cm−1), a lithium transference number of 0.72, and a wide electrochemical stability window (up to 4.9 V) at 298 K. The engineered uniform Li+ flux also promotes stable Li plating/stripping for over 900 h at 0.1 mA cm−2. Furthermore, the LFP-based CEC|CEE|Li full cells deliver a reversible capacity of 133 mAh g−1 with 95% retention after 300 cycles in coin cells, and 129 mAh g−1 with 96% retention after 250 cycles in pouch cells at 1 C. This strategy presents a promising approach for designing solid-state polymer electrolytes to extend the lifespan of high-energy-density LMBs. © 2025 Wiley-VCH GmbH.

Estimation of Internal Solitary Waves Propagation Speeds and Occurrence using Long-term Sentinel-1 SAR Data in the Lombok Strait, Indonesia

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data are necessary for ocean observations and useful for detecting internal solitary waves (ISWs). Sentinel-1 provides free and open data access, and offers valuable long-term datasets for ISW studies. The Lombok Strait is well known for its large ISW amplitude in SAR images. This strait is an outflow for the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF), which plays a crucial role in global thermohaline circulation. A nine-year dataset of Sentinel-1 SAR imagery in the Lombok Strait areas was utilized for the first time to analyze the occurrence frequency detection and propagation speed estimation of ISWs. This study proposes combining information from Sentinel-1 images with tidal predictions from a model to estimate the propagation speed of ISWs in the Lombok Strait. Correlation analysis revealed a moderate positive relationship between ISW occurrence and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) index (0.365), while the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) index had a negligible influence (-0.006). For ISW propagation speeds, there was moderate negative correlation with ENSO (-0.30) and a weak negative correlation with IOD (-0.18), suggesting that ENSO-related changes in ocean stratification have a stronger impact on ISW propagation. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis identified a 54-month cycle of ISW occurrence and a 12-month cycle of propagation speed, highlighting the effects of long-term climatic oscillations and seasonal patterns on ISW dynamics. This research demonstrates the utility of remote sensing techniques, such as SAR, in detecting ISW surface signatures, although biases remain compared to in-situ measurements due to limitations in temporal resolution and environmental factors. © 2008-2012 IEEE.

Waterborne pathogens pose a lifelong threat, necessitating advanced disinfection systemswith state-of-the-art materials. Laser-Induced Graphene (LIG), a 3-dimensional form ofgraphene, is a widely known electrode material for its electrically-induced antimicrobialproperties. However, LIG surfaces exhibit antimicrobial properties exclusively in the presenceof electricity. In this work, copper-doped LIG (Cu-LIG) composite electrodes and filterswere developed with enhanced antimicrobial properties in single-step laser scribing. Thework emphasizes the optimization of copper doping with LIG for both electrical and nonelectrical-based disinfection. The copper doping was optimized to a minimal concentration(∼1%) just to enhance the electrochemical properties of LIG. Furthermore, the excess additionof copper was helpful towards non-electricity-based treatment without significantleaching. The prepared surfaces were tested in both electrodes and filter configuration andshowed excellent antibacterial and antiviral activity against mixed bacterial culture and amodel enteric virus, MS2 bacteriophage. On the application of 2.5 V with Cu-LIG electrodes,6-log removal of bacteria and virus was achieved. Furthermore, the membrane-based electroconductivefilters were tested in a flow-through configuration and demonstrated 6-logremoval at 2.5 V with a flux of ∼ 500 (L·m^(2))/h with both bacteria and viruses at minimumenergy expense. Additionally, reactive oxygen species scavenging and hydrogen peroxidegeneration experiments have confirmed the role of electrical effects and indirect oxidationon the inactivation mechanism. The prepared Cu-LIG composite surfaces showed potentialfor environmental remediation applications.

A planing hull high-speed ferry with a stepped hull becomes a well-liked mode of water transportation for archipelago countries. On the other hand, the shape of steps on the bottom hull has not been recently taken into explicit consideration regarding the speed requirement and hydrodynamic properties. In this study, the step W shapes, were adopted to find the improved hydrodynamic performance in the planing conditions. To provide a more precise prediction of the pressure, velocity fields, and void fraction, the CFD was applied the Finite Volume Method (FVM) and coupled with Volume of Fluid Method (VOF) to capture air cavity The numerical conditions of the planing hull were trimmed by the stern with 2, and 3 degrees. This study discussed the air cavity that occurred behind the stepped area that can affect the hydrodynamic behaviour. © 2023 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

Recent studies have shown the presence of ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) in fly ash based geopolymer induced denser microstructures and better compressive strength. However, the inclusion of GGBS gives rapid setting time despite its benefit in terms of mechanical properties and could cause difficulty in handling the geopolymer in its application such as troubles with delivery time of fresh mix geopolymer concrete. This study aims to investigate the effect of polycarboxylate based superplasticizer, which is commonly used in Portland cement concrete to improve the workability and achieve appropriate compressive strength, on the fresh properties and early strength of geopolymer mortar. Geopolymer mortar was composed of fly ash and GGBS acting as binder with sodium silicate and 12 M of sodium hydroxide solution as alkaline activator. Alkaline to binder and fly ash/GGBS ratios were kept constant at 0.5 and 1.5, respectively. Superplasticizer was added into alkaline solution before casting at various dosages of 0%, 1%, 2%, 4%, and 8% by the binder mass and all the specimens were cured in two regimes of heat curing and 20ºC curing. The results have shown that the inclusion of superplasticizer maintained the workability over the time and may delay the setting of geopolymer mortar. Moreover, the mixture with 8% superplasticizer had dense microstructure and comparable compressive strength to that without superplasticizer at the age of 7 days. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
