The study aimed to evaluate the impact of occupational noise on hearing loss among healthcare workers using audiometry. A longitudinal study was conducted with a six-month follow-up period in a hospital with 21 participants, divided into high-noise-exposure (HNE) and low-noise-exposure (LNE) groups. Mean noise levels were higher in the HNE group (70.4 ± 4.5 dBA), and hearing loss was measured using pure-tone audiometry at baseline and follow-up. Despite the high toxicity of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs, or dioxins), the case studies about PCDD/Fs contamination in sediment are still few and its ecological impacts are not fully elucidated. To improve the risk management of PCDD/Fs pollution in sediment, the present study conducted the environmental risk assessment of the brine water storage pond near a chemical plant with high PCDD/Fs pollution potential before and after corrective actions. The results showed the PCDD/Fs accumulation in the fish and crab from the brine water storage pond, and the PCDD/Fs concentrations in biota were all higher than the food safety standard in Taiwan (3.5 pg-TEQ/g). Furthermore, the different indexes showed high degree of pollution including contamination factor (CF), modified degree of contamination (mCd), and pollution index (PI) in the PCDD/Fs polluted sediment. High biological risk indexes such as potential ecological risk index (RI) and risk quotient (RQ) were also observed in the PCDD/Fs contaminated sediment before the corrective actions. After the corrective actions such as institutional/engineering control and remediation, the CF, mCd, and PI decreased by 20–41%. The RI and RQ were also decreased by 41–56%. In conclusion, the corrective actions applied in the present study could help decrease the pollution and ecological risk of PCDD/Fs in the polluted sediment of the study site, which might further decrease the environmental risk to an acceptable level for the stakeholders if keeping implementation of the corrective actions. © 2022, The Authors. Rare earth elements (REEs) are exploited for global use in manufacturing. Such activities result in their release into the environment and the transformation into more stable phosphate deposition. The objective of this study was to evaluate molecular and behavioral changes of zebrafish exposed to the synthesized terbium phosphate (TbPO4) at concentrations of 10, 20, and 50 mg/L and to determine its potential for neurotoxicity. Metabolomic profiling and assessment of transcripts and proteins were conducted to uncover the molecular mechanisms underlying TbPO4 with emphasis on neurotransmitter systems. Exposure to 20 mg/L TbPO4 induced larval hyperactivity and perturbed the cholinergic system in zebrafish. Based on metabolomics, dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT), and many of their precursors and metabolites were decreased in abundance by TbPO4. In addition, the expression levels of transcripts related to the synthesis, transport, receptor binding, and metabolism of DA and 5-HT were analyzed at the mRNA and protein levels. Transcript and protein levels for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate-limiting enzyme for DA synthesis, were down-regulated in larval fish. Monoamine oxidase (MAO), an enzyme that catabolizes monoamines DA and 5-HT, also reduced mRNA abundance. We hypothesize that DA synthesis and monoamine metabolism are associated with behavioral alterations. In addition, a mechanism for the disruption of neurotransmitter systems by TbPO4 may be the apoptosis of neurons. This study elucidates putative mechanisms and exposure risks to wildlife and humans by characterizing phosphatic REE-induced neurotoxicity in developing zebrafish. © 2023, The Authors. This study focuses on developing fiber-reinforced geopolymer concrete (GPC) for 3D printing, utilizing construction waste materials and polypropylene fibers. The GPC, reinforced with 0.8%, 1.0%, and 1.2% polypropylene fibers, underwent comprehensive testing, including rheological, mechanical, and microstructural analyses for lab-cast and 3D-printed samples. Results indicate that the 0.8% polypropylene fibers enhance flexural and tensile strengths by 8.2% and 71.7%, respectively, albeit decreasing compressive strength by 26.2%. Higher polypropylene percentages led to adverse effects. Microscopic analysis revealed voids and signs of incomplete hydration. The study emphasizes optimizing water content, using longer polypropylene fibers and highlights GPC’s suitability for 3D-printing structural components. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Work capacity of compost applicator on paddy field

The addition of compost (organic fertilizer) is essential to maintain agricultural land productivity. Nutrients have a role in plant growth and development, especially in paddy plants. The application of distributing compost (organic fertilizer) on agricultural land requires considerable energy and costs, especially if the land is large. In order to overcome this, an applicator is used to reduce costs and energy and streamline the fertilization process time. This applicator is specially designed to spread compost (organic fertilizer) to agricultural land with a certain dose. This study aimed to calculate the working capacity and efficiency of the compost applicator in paddy fields. The study was conducted by direct testing in the fields with three different speed treatments, namely at 2.71 km/hour, 3.38 km/hour, and 4.62 km/hour. The calculation results show that the optimum speed of the applicator in paddy fields is 2.71 km/hour. The working capacity obtained is 0.35 ha/hour for theoretical field capacity and 0.26 ha/hour for effective field capacity with a field efficiency of 74.74%.

Dynamics of one-dimensional spin models via complex-time evolution of tensor networks

Studying the real-time dynamics of strongly correlated systems poses significant challenges, which have recently become more manageable thanks to advances in density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and tensor network methods. A notable development in this area is the introduction of a complex-time evolution scheme for tensor network states, originally suggested for solving Anderson impurity model and designed to suppress the growth of entanglement under time evolution. In this study, we employ the complex-time evolution scheme to investigate the dynamics of one-dimensional spin systems, specifically the transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) and the XXZ model. Our analysis revisits the dynamic critical exponent z of the TFIM and explores the dynamical structure factor in both gapped and gapless states of the XXZ model. Importantly, the complex-time evolution reproduces the results of real-time evolution while mitigating the rapid growth of quantum entanglement typically associated with the latter. These results demonstrate that the combination of complex-time evolution and extrapolation provides a robust and efficient framework for studying the dynamics of complex quantum systems, enabling more comprehensive insights into their behavior. © 2025, CC BY.

The Mediterranean population of Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is reported as "Critically endangered" by IUCN Red List and its spatial distribution seems to be fragmented in colonies, mainly found around the Ionian and Aegean *** seals are proved to be highly affected by human pressure such as boat traffic and fishery. Previous studies highlighted the occurrence of net depredation and interactions with artisanal small-scale fisheries. Accordingly, a source of concern is the little quantitative information on various aspects of the Greek small-scale fisheries. Thus, the landings composition of the Marathokampos Bay’s fleet between 2009 and 2011 has been analysed. Then, a dietary overlap index and multivariate analysis were used to analyse the overlap between resources exploited by fisheries and those consumed by monk *** show that for a total of 565 days at sea, 57 % of those fishing days were performed with Trammel nets, 11.3 % with 8-9 mm Gillnets, 18.4 % with Longline, 12.6 % with Boat seine, 0.5 % with Kalami and 0.2 % for the Purse seine. The total landing biomass of 14.3 tons was composed of 68 species. Monk seal’s diets considered in the analysis showed the highest resource overlap with the Boat seines and the lowest with the Purse seines. Results of the cluster analysis showed that the similarity at 0.2 similarity level revealed a big group composed only by fishing métiers (Longline, Trammel net, Purse seine and total fleet).This study suggests that filling this gap of knowledge could support the implementation of conservation actions. Furthermore, some preliminary results regarding the characteristic of the Marathokampos Bay’s fishing fleet are provided, and the need to gather further data able to better quantify the impacts of both monk seals and fishery on the resources is underlined.
