ormaldehyde (HCHO) is a significant volatile organic compound (VOC) commonly found in indoor air, leading to serious health implications upon exposure. This study investigates the photocatalytic degradation of formaldehyde using Zn or Sn-doped TiO2 as the photocatalyst. Microwave system is used not only for synthesizing aluminum slag and glass but for doping Sn and Zn into zeolite. The results showed that P25-TiO2 nanoparticles annealed at 400°C exhibited a higher intensity of anatase peaks, while TiO2 doped with 0.5 mol% Zn and Sn and annealed at 400°C showed stronger anatase peaks in the XRD patterns. SEM images displayed a surface morphology with fine flakes and flower-like structures after annealing at 400°C for Zn and Sn-doped TiO2, respectively. Photoluminescence analysis indicated that 0.5 mol% Zn-doped TiO2 exhibited a greater red shift and lower intensity. Among the various samples, TiO2 doped with 0.5 mol% Zn demonstrated the optimal photocatalytic efficiency for formaldehyde degradation, achieving the highest degradation efficiency of 75% within 40 minutes. 0.5 mol% Zn-doped TiO2 can effectively enhance the photocatalytic performance and degradation efficiency of formaldehyde due to reducing recombination centers. The hydroxycancrinite mixed TiO2 doped with 0.5 mol% Zn exhibited an increased specific surface area of 95.5 m2 g−1. Under visible light, formaldehyde degradation reached saturation within 20 minutes, resulting in an efficiency of 20.1%. Both photodegradation and adsorption was used for formaldehyde degradation. The study provides the development of efficient materials for indoor air treatment and pollutant degradation. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Thermal aging produces irreversible aging to home decoration PVC insulation copper cables through high temperatures, and their pyrolytic behavior changes as a result. The thermogravimetric-Fourier transform infrared analysis, the model-free method and the Málek method were used to investigate the effect of thermal aging on the pyrolysis mechanism of domestic PVC insulation copper cables. It was found that pyrolysis is more easily to occur in aged cables, and 20 days of aging is the most dangerous threshold for the pyrolysis of ZR-BVR cable insulation. The pyrolysis release gases were mainly concentrated in the temperature intervals of 270-340 and 400-700°C. In addition, it should be noted that different degrees of thermal aging affect the pyrolysis behavior of cable insulation but have little effect on the pyrolysis mechanism. © 2023

The purpose of this workshop-designed for instructional and disciplinary STEM faculty interested in learning about qualitative research-is to (1) introduce participants to high-quality qualitative research design and (2) practice this design process alongside disciplinary STEM faculty to expand their STEM education research abilities and network. We will do so using the ProQual approach, a methodologically unencumbered and widely accessible way of thinking about qualitative research design that was deployed and refined over the last three years as part of the NSF-funded ProQual Institute for Research Methods [1]. This workshop will be conducted by ProQual Institute alumni, who are culturally sensitive to the challenges faced by disciplinary STEM faculty. Leveraging a propagation model of effecting academic change [2], the workshop leaders will serve as a community of practice to help participants move their educational research ideas forward during and after the workshop. In doing so, we strive to further FIE's mission to create a collaborative, supportive, and inclusive community of educational researchers.

Pre-treatment optimization to reduce membrane fouling during produced water treatment with an integrated FO-MD system

During oil exploration, fresh water that is injected into underground reservoirs returns to the surface loaded with hydrocarbons, salts, and other contaminants. This complex solution is typically known as produced water (PW). Generally, different PW streams are generated at a given site, which, after suitable treatment, are sent for re-injection for enhanced oil recovery or to disposal wells. However, there is a potential for water recovery from this hypersaline contaminated stream. Forward osmosis (FO) and membrane distillation (MD) are two low-pressure membrane treatment technologies successfully used in a single hybrid system for PW treatment. During operation, the key foulants on the FO membrane were CaSiO₃, CaSO₄, and NaCl, while for MD, they were SiO₂ and CaSO₄ plus emulsified oil, causing pore clogging. Some foulants were tightly bound and not removed by osmotic backwashing or hydraulic flushing, thus requiring pre-treatment. Different pre-treatment techniques, like ion exchange resins and polymeric and ceramic membrane-based ultrafiltration (UF), were assessed in this study. The resins were able to remove bivalent metallic ions successfully from lower concentration streams only and thus caused an increase in FO flux and a reduction in MD flux by disturbing the FO-MD system equilibrium. The higher concentrations of resins and chemicals required for their regeneration make them unsuitable for such applications. On the contrary, PW pre-treated with polymeric and ceramic UF membranes led to increased FO and MD fluxes without any chemical requirement and proved suitable for pre-treatment. © 2025 The Authors

Hard water is one of crucial problems in the world due to its pollutant parameters. Adsorption is a promising method for treating hard water because of its benefits such as low-cost, easy to use, acceptable, and easy to maintenance. In this study, we utilized zeolite functionalized with silicon/aluminum (Ze-Si/Al) as adsorbent materials for hard water treatment. Ten different ratios of Si/Al were added into zeolite by modifying the solid waste source concentration (pumice and cans). The optimum sample was then further tested with different parameters including contact time, dye concentration, and isotherm models. The zeolite-Si/Al adsorbent was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF). Results of this study have showed that the best functionalized zeolite was that with Si/Al ratio 0.67, which has higher sorption ability. In contact time test, the equilibrium was reached after 300 min. This study also informed that the concentration of dyes will give impact on removal of pollutant parameters. Isotherm model of Ze-Si/Al fitted with Langmuir method. This study also discussed the potential development and future research direction. Thus, this study is a crucial report to develop the information about waste utilization as source of Si/Al to increasing quality of zeolite. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

The ASTM standard recommends that the 16 most common types of PAHs are found in petroleum processing activities, the chemical industry and marine loading ports. This research aims to identify and determine the distribution of PAHs contaminants at three sampling points of seawater around Paotere Port, Makassar, South Sulawesi, using the GC-MS instrument. Sampling point A is the center of Paotere Port activity, Point B with a radius of 3 km and point C with a radius of 6 km from the center of port activity. Sampling at each point was carry out at a depth of 100 cm above sea level. There are 10 PAHs identified at sampling point A and B, while at point C there are 8 components with relatively the same type of PAHs. The dominant PAHs components at each sampling point are relatively the same, namely at point A: Pyrene, Chrysene, Benz[a]pyrene and Dibenz(a,h)anthracene, point B: Pyrene, Chrysene and Benz(a)anthtracene, while at point C only Pyrene. The total concentration of PAHs at point A: 4,217 .106 ppm, medium polluted category, at point B: 2,124 .087 ppm, medium polluted category and at point C: 1,264 . 112 ppm, light polluted category. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The purpose of this research is to know public perception of biogas users in Jetak Village, Semarang Regency viewed from technological aspect, technical (biogas installation), biogas benefit, economy and environment. The method used qualitative descriptive with qualitative descriptive approach. The technique of determining key informants was done by purposive sampling. Data were obtained from cattle ranchers who lived in the study sites through interviews, observation and documentation. The result of this research is overall the perception about biogas energy get a positive response from user society. However, there are some things that should be considered for the government and others in providing assistance that is necessary to consider the evaluation and monitoring periodically so that the constraints experienced by the user community can be known early and can be found right solutions. In addition, the sustainability of the use of biogas energy can be done from generation to generation not just the aid which in the end becomes only useless materials. © 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd. A balance between silencing foreign DNA and protecting self in Caenorhabditis elegans

Unrestrained transposon mobilization threatens genome integrity. To survive, organisms have evolved silencing pathways capable of distinguishing self from non-self. This review emphasizes Caenorhabditis elegans genome defense with a particular emphasis on systems-level detection of foreign DNA and the balance between silencing and protective pathways. Abundant small RNAs (piRNAs and siRNAs), aberrant DNA structures (e.g., introns), and heterochromatin domains largely mediate silencing. For example, CRISPR-based manipulation of endogenous piRNAs has elucidated precise targeting rules and a novel, conserved role in tuning endogenous germline gene expression. Protective pathways are only just becoming clear: small RNA pathways (CSR-1), deamination of endogenous dsRNA, and a pervasive, embedded DNA watermark (PATCs) can all counteract silencing to protect endogenous genes. © 2018
