This study explores the impact of varying steel fiber percentages (0%, 0.8%, 1.0%, and 1.2% of the binder by volume) on the mechanical properties of geopolymer concrete (GPC). Initial investigations on the GPC matrix involved characterization of mechanical properties through tests of compressive, flexural, and tensile strengths, which were conducted across all fiber percentages. The best results were obtained at 1.2% fiber content, with a more than doubling of the 28-day tensile strength and a 16% increase of the flexural strength relative to the material without steel fibers. The compressive strength was not affected and remained at around 40 MPa. The interlayer bond strength increased by 20%, and both the dynamic and the static elastic moduli improved, indicating an improvement in structural integrity and capacity. The early-age cracking risk was assessed by measurements of autogenous shrinkage, of self-induced stresses measured with the Dual Ring Tests, and compressive basic creep on the mixture with 1.2% fiber content. These tests demonstrated a significant reduction in shrinkage and slight decrease in self-induced stresses. Microstructure analysis using X-ray microtomography, SEM, and ASTM C642 tests further confirmed the improved structural integrity of the steel fiber-reinforced concrete. The optimal fiber content of 1.2% of the binder not only strengthens the geopolymer matrix but also improves its long-term stability and durability, making it a viable reinforcement choice for additive manufacturing and construction applications. © 2024, The Authors. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a powerful tool that has the potential to reveal the extent of an ongoing disease outbreak or to predict an emerging one. Recent studies have shown that SARS-CoV-2 concentration in wastewater may be correlated with the number of COVID-19 cases in the corresponding population. Most of the recent studies and applications of wastewater-based surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 applied the “gold standard” real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) detection method. However, this method also has its limitations. The paper aimed to present recent improvements and applications of the PCR-based methods for SARS-CoV-2 monitoring in wastewater. Furthermore, it aimed to review alternative methods utilized and/or proposed for the detection of the virus in wastewater matrices. From the review, it was found that several studies have investigated the use of reverse-transcription digital polymerase reaction (RT-dPCR), which was generally shown to have a lower limit of detection (LOD) over the RT-qPCR. Aside from this, non-PCR-based and non-RNA based methods have also been explored for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater, with detailed attention given to the detection of SARS-CoV-2 proteins. The potential methods for protein detection include mass spectrometry, the use of immunosensors, and nanotechnological applications. In addition, the review of recent studies also revealed two types of emerging methods related to the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater: i) capsid-integrity assays to infer about the infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 present in wastewater, and ii) alternative methods for detection of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) in wastewater. The recent studies on proposed methods of SARS-CoV-2 detection in wastewater have considered improving this approach in one or more of the following aspects: rapidity, simplicity, cost, sensitivity, and specificity. Application of dry strength agents for the manufacture of low basis weight corrugating medium based on recycled aseptic carton fibers

Korean old corrugated containers (KOCC) have insufficient compressive strength because the bonding potential of the unsorted recovered fibers is poor. Compared to the nature of KOCC, the recovered aseptic carton is a high-quality resource produced from virgin pulp, which is expected to improve the strength of a testliner. In this study, the usage of recycled aseptic carton fibers was attempted to improve the strength properties of corrugating medium paper. In addition to recycled aseptic carton fibers, the application of a dry-strength agent was attempted to improve the bonding potential of fibers. Consequently, the compressive strength increased when the retention of fines in the mixed stock of KOCC and aseptic fibers increased. Meanwhile, aseptic carton comprised fibers with high stiffness and low flexibility;hence, the aseptic carton fibers exhibited a higher compressive strength than KOCC but did not fully manifest the efficiency of dry-strength agents. These results suggest that recycled aseptic carton fibers with or without beating should be used to obtain a sufficient compressive strength of the corrugating medium. The selective application of the dry-strength agent to the KOCC instead of the aseptic carton fibers may also be beneficial. © 2019 Korean Technical Assoc. of the Pulp and Paper Industry. Comparative analysis of the efficiency of gas grafting reaction of different types of Hanji with palmitoyl chloride

This study was conducted to investigate the changes in the grafting efficiency of different types of Hanji, such as a raw materials and manufacturing methods varying different palmitoyl chloride concentrations and reaction temperatures. The results showed that the raw material of Hanji affected the grafting efficiency. The grafting efficiency of Hanji produced using the bast fiber of Edgeworthia chrysantha Lindl. was particularly excellent. Meanwhile, the amidation between anionic polyacrylamide (A-PAM) and palmitoyl chloride was speculated to occur in the case of Hanji at which A-PAM was added. However, the manufacturing process of Hanji had little influence on the graft reaction efficiency. The strength and brightness of all Hanji samples decreased via the gas grafting treatment, regardless of the kind of Hanji. The changes in the hydrophobicity, physical and optical properties of Hanji samples via gas grafting increased with the increasing palmitoyl chloride concentration and reaction temperature. © 2019 Korean Technical Assoc. of the Pulp and Paper Industry. Aerial imagery reveals abnormal stingrays, Taeniura lymma (Myliobatiformes: Dasyatidae), in the central Red Sea

While morphological abnormalities have been widely reported in batomorphs, ontogenetic deformities of the posterior pectoral fin are rare. In this paper, we present two individuals of the bluespotted ribbontail ray, (Forsskål, 1775), with symmetrically deformed posterior pectoral fins. Both individuals were observed through aerial imagery on a coastal sandflat in the central Red Sea (22.30° N, 39.09° E). The similarity of this symmetrical deformity in both individuals indicates it likely has a genetic base. However, lacking access to the specimens, the ultimate cause of the abnormality remains uncertain. The incomplete disk closure did not seem to affect survival, as both individuals had reached a disk width of 22 cm, well above the typical birth size of the species. Our observations constitute both the first report of a morphological abnormality in and the first record of a batomorph with a symmetrically deformed posterior pectoral fin.

Artificial aging characteristics of hydrophobic hanjis grafted by gaseous palmitoyl chloride

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of gas grafting treatment on the durability of Korean traditional paper i.e., Hanji. Dry heating- and humid heating-accelerated aging tests were performed. Further, the properties of each Hanji sample, including strength, optical property, Cobb size degree, and static contact angle, were analyzed. The decrease in the strength and optical characteristics of the Hanji hydrophobized via gas grafting with palmitoyl chloride during artificial aging was found to be more significant than that of untreated paper. The decrease in durability was speculated to be caused by the residual free fatty acids in the Hanji. In contrast, no changes in the Cobb size and static contact angle of the hydrophobic Hanji occurred during accelerated aging. In summary, the hydrophobicity of Hanji grafted with palmitoyl chloride remained unchanged during 30 days of dry-heating aging and 60 days of humid-heating aging, however, the durability of paper material, including strength and optical properties, deteriorated. Therefore, the attenuation and elimination of residual free fatty acids must be investigated to prevent the decrease of durability. © 2019 Korean Technical Assoc. of the Pulp and Paper Industry. Gajahmada Street is one of the main streets in the city of Semarang. The location is very strategic, which connects the Golden Triangle Region in Semarang City which is the center of the city. As a city center, transportation activities in the area are very high. Transportation activities produce carbon dioxide emissions. The accumulation of carbon dioxide emissions is dangerous for health and the environment. Semarang City Government provides green open space along the road section to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The purpose of this study was to determine the vegetation resilience to absorbing carbon dioxide at that location. The data collection method uses literature collection and field observations. The results showed the ability of green open space to absorb carbon dioxide emissions is 1.218,7 tons/ha/year. While the emissions produced are 6.832 tons/year, meaning that there is residual carbon dioxide that is not absorbed, that is 5.613,3 tons/year. © The Authors, published by EDP sciences, 2020.

Water quality of Maninjau Lake, West Sumatera Province based on pollution and STORET indices

Maninjau Lake can be found in West Sumatra province, specifically in the Tanjung Raya District of the Agam Regency. The Government and the nearsocieties utilize the lake catchment area aimed at agriculture, refreshment, settlement and floating net cages. Increased anthropogenic activity can affect the quality of the lake. This investigation’s goal is to assess Lake Maninjau’s water quality using the Pollution Index (PI) and the Storage and Retrieval (STORET) method. The research was showed at five sampling stations in the Maninjau Lake area from November 2021. The water quality in Maninjau Lake is classified as moderately polluted by the STORET method. Nonetheless, the Maninjau Lake’s water quality falls under different categories according to the PI. From Good condition to Moderately polluted is the range for Class I (in use as a water source for drinking). Lightly to Moderately polluted is Class II (outdoor recreation assets and facilities, fishery, livestock farming, and agricultural uses). Class III, on the other hand (meant for breeding freshwater fish, raising livestock, and watering crops) and Class IV irrigation systems are categorized as Good condition and lightly polluted, respectively.

The effect of granular palm shell activated carbon to reduce CO, HC, and noise on motorcycle Emissions

The use of motorcycles increased rapidly. Data from Yogyakarta Central Bureau Statistics showed from 2015 to 2019 the number of motorized vehicles increased by 8% every year. Motor vehicle air pollution comes from exhaust gases resulting from combustion. Becak Motorcycles are widely used in Yogyakarta and are usually used motorcycles with a long life. Hydrocarbons (HC) or unburned fuel and carbon monoxide (CO), were air-fuel control. This research was studied to determine the ability of palm shell activated charcoal to reduce CO, HC and noise. The 14 meshes sample diameter placed inside the tube from 24 meshes of stainless steels were prepared. The weight of activated charcoal of 10 grams, 20 grams and 30 grams were tried to reduce the In the exhaust of a 1984 Suzuki motorcycle with plate number AB 4194 CK, an exhaust extension was installed, then palm activated carbon was placed inside and the emission gases were measured. Stages 898 was used to test the emission. The smallest size could adsorb the largest emissions and noise. The weight of activated charcoal of 10 grams, 20 grams and 30 grams 14 meshes could reduce CO, HC and noise emission were 0.294 % to 0.616 %, 454 ppm to 798 ppm, -o.63 dB to 1.6 dB, respectively. The weight of activated charcoal of 10 grams, 20 grams and 30 grams 14 meshes saturated time were 270 seconds, 173 seconds and 299 seconds, respectively.
