Effects of gas grafting treatment with different amounts of palmitoyl chloride on properties of CNF-coated paper

Effects of gas grafting treatment using palmitoyl chloride on properties of papers coated with three different types of CNFs whose crystalline structures are different were investigated. One type of cellulose I based CNF (cellulose nanofibril) and two types of cellulose II based CNFs were utilized for this study. Effects of the applied amount of palmitoyl chloride on the CNF coated papers were also investigated. It was found that tensile strength and stabilities of optical properties of the CNF coated papers such as color, brightness, and yellowness were deteriorated with the gas grafting treatment with palmitoyl chloride. Increasing the applied amount of palmitoyl chloride increased the degree of deterioration. Applying excess amount of palmitoyl chloride for gas grafting increased the roughness of the CNF coated paper. In addition, increasing the pick-up of CNF on paper increased air resistance while the applied amount of palmitoyl chloride did not show any significant effects on air permeability. © 2020 Korean Technical Assoc. of the Pulp and Paper Industry. The Choushui River groundwater basin (CRGB) in Yunlin County, Taiwan, is a significant groundwater source for the western part of the region. However, increasing groundwater demand and human activities have triggered a potential crisis due to overexploitation. Therefore, groundwater potential zone (GWPZ) maps are crucial for mapping groundwater resources and water resource management. This study employs the normalized index–overlay method and fuzzy extended analytical hierarchy process (FE-AHP) to map GWPZs cost-effectively. The methodology objectively incorporates weightings from various thematic layers by normalizing and correlating parameters with observed groundwater availability (GA). Site-specific observations, including aquifer thickness, depth to the groundwater level, and porosity, inform GA calculations. Seven comprehensive layers derived from remote sensing (RS) data are processed to obtain weightings and ratings for the groundwater potential index (GWPI) in the CRGB. Selected parameters are categorized into hydrological processes, human interventions, geological, and surface profiles. Hydrological processes include precipitation, modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI), and drainage density. Human interventions consist of the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and normalized difference building index (NDBI). Surface profiles encompass the terrain ruggedness index (TRI) and slope, enhancing the study’s multi-criteria approach. The observed GA validates the GWPZ accuracy, classifying zones into five categories. According to the GWPI of FE-AHP, about 59.56% of the CRGB area can be categorized as "moderate" to "very good" potential groundwater recharge zones. Pearson’s correlation coefficient between GWPI and GA, based on FE-AHP, outperforms the conventional AHP. This RS-based approach efficiently evaluates GA in aquifers with limited wells, highlighting crucial zones in CRGB’s proximal-fan and southeastern mid-fan for informed groundwater management

Sustainable groundwater management based on groundwater basin (GWB) must be equipped with comprehensive information including the characteristic of hydrogeology. This management method is very useful for governments to design some regulations, such as tax and conservation zone. Nowadays, not only the government but the public society can also have access to know this management. Open and transparent groundwater application needs sufficient data. Based on that issue, this research aims to provide the geological and hydrogeological conditions of GWB, define the aquifer configurations, and determine the groundwater recharge-discharge zones and the type of GWB boundary on Karangkobar GWB. The methods applied to the study are 1) mapping the geological and hydrogeological condition;2) reconstruction of subsurface stratigraphic condition;and 3) overlay four parameters of the recharge-discharge zone. The Karangkobar GWB consists of the unconfined and confined aquifer of High Plain Aquifer, where the groundwater flows from north and east heading southward and westward. Seven boundary types bounded the Karangkobar GWB. The map can also support the open and transparent water data application system, it will also ease the party that will conduct an assessment to design regulation regarding the groundwater management. © The Authors, published by EDP sciences, 2019.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been recognized as one of the biggest public health issues of the 21 st century. Both ARB and ARGs have been determined in water after treatment with conventional disinfectants. Ultraviolet (UV) technology has been seen growth in application to disinfect the water. However, UV method alone is not adequate to degrade ARGs in water. Researchers are investigating the combination of UV with other oxidants (chlorine, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and photocatalysts) to harness the high reactivity of produced reactive species (C1-, C1O -, Cl2-,-OH, and SO4-_) in such processes with constituents of cell (e.g., deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and its components) in order to increase the degradation efficiency of ARGs. This paper briefly reviews the current status of different UV-based treatments (UV/chlorination, UV/H2O2, UV/PMS, and UV-photocatalysis) to degrade ARGs and to control horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in water. The review also provides discussion on the mechanism of degradation of ARGs and application of q-PCR and gel electrophoresis to obtain insights of the fate of ARGs during UV-based treatment processes.

Background The removal of hazardous dyes from water by magnetic adsorbents has received significant interest due to their low cost and ease of separation from the solution phase. This study explores the efficacy of a novel hybrid adsorbent, magnetite and activated charcoal-modified MgAl layered double hydroxide (MgAlLDH@MAC), for removing congo red (CR) from aqueous solutions. Methods MgAlLDH@MAC was successfully prepared via a co-precipitation to hydrothermal method and characterized using FE-SEM, FE-STEM, VSM, BET, XRD, FTIR, XPS, and HPLC analysis. Significant findings The incorporation of magnetite and activated charcoal was successful, resulting in excellent adsorption performance for CR and easy separation from the solution due to its magnetic properties. The adsorbent achieved a maximum adsorption capacity of 625 mg/g, which is in line with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Moreover, the adsorbent demonstrated excellent stability and reusability, retaining 91.78% efficiency after five adsorption-desorption. This study offers a fresh viewpoint on creating high-performance LDH adsorbents that remove dyes quickly and effectively using carbon and magnetite materials. © 2024, The Authors. Waste transportation is a part of complex waste management. Waste transportation will be influenced by the growth of waste. To simplify the implementation of garbage transportation, a waste transportation model is needed. Various wastes transportation models have been developed to explain the process of transporting garbage. The garbage transport model is basically designed to simplify the transportation system so that the behavior of several components in the system can be known. One of the models that can be used in the garbage transportation system is GIS. GIS is a spatial and computerized waste-based modeling, so in era 4.0 this modeling of waste transportation using GIS was needed. This paper aims to discuss the modeling of waste transportation using GIS has been carried out in various regions. The discussion of the paper discusses the use of GIS in waste transportation, a factor that influences GIS in waste transportation. © The Authors, published by EDP sciences, 2019.

Concrete, a widely utilized building material, plays a pivotal role in the development of modern infrastructure. However, its extensive consumption and the substantial environmental damage associated with its life cycle have raised serious concerns about its sustainability. With the global efforts of cutting carbon emissions across each sector, it is critical to find alternatives that are environmentally friendly and feasible for the construction sector. Furthermore, numerous researchers have been actively exploring the incorporation of various waste materials into concrete production as part of a concerted effort to minimize waste. This paper focuses on analyzing the environmental impacts of five different waste materials utilization in concrete production and explores potential prospects for more environmentally friendly alternatives. It has been observed that one promising approach is the incorporation of recycled aggregates, such as fly ash, blast furnace slag, and marble sludge, as partial or total replacements for natural aggregates. These recycled materials aid in efficient waste stream management and lessen the need for virgin resources. Based on the application and the percentage of waste material inclusion, the carbon emissions can be lowered by 10 – 30%. This work highlights ongoing efforts within the scientific community to mitigate the environmental impacts of concrete through alternative materials and methods. Furthermore, this research emphasizes the imperative for concerted collaboration among academia, policymakers, and professionals within the construction industry to chart a course toward a more sustainable future for the construction sector.

It is known that social stress could alter oxytocin(OT)and arginine-vasopressin(AVP)expression in specific regions of brains which regulate the aggressive behavior of small rodents,but the effects of density-induced social stress are still ***’s voles(Lasiopodomys brandtii)are small herbivores in the grassland of China,but the underlying neurological mechanism of population regulation is still *** tested the effects of housing density of Brandt’s voles on OT/AVP system with physical contact(allowing aggression)and without physical contact(not allowing aggression)under laboratory ***,we tested the effects of paired-aggression(no density effect)of Brandt’s voles on OT/AVP system under laboratory *** hypothesized that high density would increase aggression among animals which would then increase AVP but reduce OT in brains of *** results showed that high housing density induced more aggressive *** found high-densityinduced social stress(with or without physical contact)and direct aggression significantly increased expression of mRNA and protein of AVP and its receptor,but decreased expression of mRNA and protein of OT and its receptor in specific brain regions of *** results suggest that density-dependent change of OT/AVP systems may play a significant role in the population regulation of small rodents by altering density-dependent aggressive behavior.

The research of pyrolytic thermodegradation of plastic wastes has received much attention. However, detailed combustion behavior and pyrolysis kinetics of microplastics are still absent in the current research. Understanding the characteristics and kinetics of microplastic pyrolysis is vital for designing and optimizing operational conditions. Adding silica to high-density polyethylene (HDPE) microplastics can effectively avoid the agglomeration of microplastics during pyrolysis, thereby better elucidating their thermodegradation. In the experiment, HDPE microplastics are mixed with SiO2 at different weight ratios (10 %, 20 %, 50 %, 70 %, and 100 %) to observe the dispersion effect on the microplastic thermodegradation. The results suggest that less than 20 % of PE in the mixture can retain microplastic pyrolysis characteristics. In combustion analysis, 10 % PE undergoes a faster thermo-oxidation reaction than pure HDPE. This study applies the independent parallel reaction (IPR) model and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to investigate microplastic pyrolysis kinetics. The pyrolysis activation energy is between 273.89 and 292.90 kJ‧mol−1, with fit quality high than 95 %, and rises with decreasing dispersion degree and increasing heating rate. This indicates that microplastic thermodegradation has low activation energy and is affected by heat transfer rate. The Py-GC/MS analysis indicates that up to 83.6 % of alkene and 52.3 % of products comprise high carbon numbers (17-Pentatriacontene and 1-Octatriacontene), respectively, suggesting the suppression of the secondary reaction of microplastics in the pyrolysis reaction. The calculated kinetic parameters are beneficial for understanding microplastic thermodegradation characteristics and can provide useful information for reactor design in industrial pyrolyzers or gasifiers. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.
