This study uses Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) and Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) precipitation data to identify extreme precipitation intensity and frequency changes in Indonesia. Extreme precipitation calculations were performed using the Gumbel distribution and return period fitted to annual maxima data. Extreme precipitation and frequency of extreme events were compared between the historical period and the near-future period (2026–2055) and the far-future period (2070–2099) to identify changes. The results showed that there were changes in extreme precipitation in Indonesia both in intensity and frequency of occurrence. Extreme precipitation with a 5-year return period in Indonesia generally has a change value in the range of − 5 to + 25% with most areas likely to increase. The increased value reaches + 20% in the near-future period and + 40% in the far-future period. For the frequency of extreme precipitation above the 5-year return period in Indonesia, the change value is generally in the range of − 40 to + 120% with most areas likely to increase. The increased value reaches + 160% in the near-future period and + 200% in the far-future period. In the higher emission scenario (SSP5-8.5), the areas with higher values of increase will expand both in the change in intensity and frequency of occurrence. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Despite various attempts throughout past decades to deal with concurrent delays in construction project schedules, they continue to be a vexing issue that has eluded an unambiguous solution. Prior studies have resorted to the prime contract, which only binds general contractor and owner, cannot be proven to be fair, and may even be biased. Therefore, this paper adopts a concept from cooperative game theory, the Shapley value, which apportions profits (which project participants seek to maximize). Creatively applying it to liquidated damages (which they seek to minimize), the model uses all participants' actual finish dates as input to gain percentage shares of liquidated damages as output. Analyzing all possible coalitions among participants and assigning weights comprehensively assesses their marginal contributions to the project finish date. This generalized view of participants explicitly includes subcontractors, whom prior approaches typically ignored. An example demonstrates how the model also implies an early completion bonus. This yields compelling implications for real-world incentives that can be cast into future contract clauses. © ASCE.

Impact of preparedness on safety behavior in dealing with emergencies on container ships: an analysis of the role of safety knowledge, motivation, and awareness

The loading and unloading activities of container ships at the Tanjung Perak Port is imperative, as they can be carried out quickly and efficiently. These ships tend to have a high frequency of visits and possess the largest gross tonnage among ships used for the transportation of goods. The occurrence of an accident involving a container ship can have a detrimental effect on the seamless delivery of goods via sea transportation. Furthermore, the crew be adequately prepared in order to mitigate the risk. As evidenced by research on safety behaviour have not taken preparedness as a factor into consideration when addressing emergencies. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of safety knowledge, motivation, and awareness on safety behaviour in dealing with emergencies on container ships in accordance with relevant regulations. A total of 180 ship crew members served as respondents and it analysed using SEM-PLS. The results showed that preparedness, including safety procedures, emergency training, and crew security culture is an important aspect in dealing with emergencies. Furthermore, this study obtained an R square value of 0.525 in the structural model, indicating that the independent variables have an influence on behaviour, and it was classified in the good category. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Projecting Forest Fire Probability in South Korea under Climate Change, Population, and Forest Management Scenarios Using AI & Process-Based Hybrid Model (FLAM-Net)

Climate change-induced heat waves and densely forested areas near urban centers in South Korea create complex challenges for wildfire response systems. Various forest fire models have been developed to address this, each with unique strengths and weaknesses. Process-based models offer high interpretability through human domain knowledge but require extensive optimization, while machine learning models automatically identify important features but have limited interpretability. To leverage the strengths of both models, this study aimed to integrate human domain knowledge into a machine learning framework. IIASA's wildfire cLimate impacts and Adaptation Model (FLAM)—a process-based model incorporating biophysical and human impacts—was developed as a neural network called FLAM-Net. Enhancements included improving backpropagation for optimization and introducing algorithms for national-specific fire ignition dynamics. FLAM-Net was applied at multiple scales and integrated through U-Net-based architecture, named Deep Neural FLAM (DN-FLAM), to produce downscaled predictions. The optimization revealed spatial concentration of fires near metropolitan areas and the east coast, with temporal concentration in spring due to agricultural burning. Integration of multi-scale features through DN-FLAM achieved optimal performance with Pearson's r values of 0.943, 0.840, and 0.641 for temporal, spatial, and spatio-temporal validations. Future projections based on Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) indicated increasing fire frequencies until 2050, followed by a decrease due to increased precipitation. This study demonstrates the benefits of the hybrid approach, providing interpretability, accuracy, and efficient optimization. These hybrid models offer scientific evidence to guide locally tailored decision-making for climate change-induced forest fires and lay the groundwork for global application through their optimization capabilities. © 2008-2012 IEEE.

During COVID-19 pandemic several countries have implemented quarantines in response to the virus’ spread, which was considered an emergency. Thailand was under a state of emergency from January to December 2020, which has had an impact on the state of environment. Based on real-time data from the Pollution Control Department, the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on PM2.5 pollution in Thailand was examined. Inverse Distance Weighted interpolation was used to generate a more accurate visual representation of the PM2.5 pollution through a spatial distribution of atmospheric pollutants across the provinces of Thailand. PM2.5 levels in all considered areas reduced considerably between 2017 and 2020, with the most significant decrease occurring during the lockdown period of April-July in 2020. As the pre-COVID-19 period occurred during late winter in Thailand, the monthly average PM2.5 concentrations in all selected provinces were gradually increased from December 2019 to March 2020. During the lockdown period, the concentration of PM2.5 was reduced in Pathum Thani (48.9%), Samut Sakhon (35.6%) Samut Prakarn (33.6%), and Bangkok (31.7%) The spatial–temporal distribution of the PM2.5 levels in Samut Sakhon and Samut Prakarn provinces were analyzed for October 2020, during the new normal period. The results showed a significant decrease in concentration of up to 31% compared to previous years where industrial operations were situated. This study showed that the government enforced lockdown during COVID-19 pandemic was beneficial in understanding the impact of reduced human activities on anthropogenic air pollutants’ concentrations. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Effect of physical and biological pretreatment on sugarcane bagasse waste-based biogas production

Sugarcane bagasse is a biomass with very potential, especially in agricultural countries. In this research, a study related to pretreatment and the ratio of C/N to biogas production from sugarcane bagasse was conducted. The study was carried out on a laboratory scale with physical pretreatment by grinding with a size of 6 mesh, then biological pretreatment with the microbial consortium 5 % g/V, and variations in the C/N ratio at 25 and 30. Cow rumen fluid was used in this study as a source of anaerobic bacteria and technical urea is used to adjust the C/N ratio. The solid total is set at 7 %. Based on research that has been carried out for 60 days, it was found that physical pretreatment by grinding with a size of 6 mesh can increase biogas production. Biogas production increased both at C/N ratio conditions of 25 and 30. Furthermore, biological pretreatment with the microbial consortium 5 % g/V was proven to increase biogas production at both C/N ratios of 25 and 30. Further studies on the C/N ratio, it was found that the C/N ratio of 25 was better than the C/N ratio of 30. This is evident in several variables, including raw and fine substrate conditions, as well as on variables with or without a microbial consortium, with the amount of biogas productivity at a C/N 25 ratio of 53-90.5 % higher than the C/N 30 ratio. © 2023 The Authors. The dissolved organic matter in initial rainwater (RDOM), including soil-dissolved organic matter (SDOM) and water-soluble organic matter (WSOM) in the atmosphere, can potentially mediate the migration and transformation of contaminants in natural water. However, researches on its sources, characteristics, and impact of environmental factors are limited. This study aims to investigate the main sources of RDOM and its properties influenced by environmental factors (such as light exposure and temperature variation). The results revealed that RDOM was mainly composed of SDOM. Temperature (–5°C, −20°C, temperature alternating, 40°C, 50°C, 60°C) induced the variation of SDOM components, altering its fluorescence characteristics, aromatic components, and hydrophobicity. And high temperature showed a more pronounced effect on SDOM components. However, temperature fluctuations had different impacts on the SDOM-mediated photodegradation of bisphenol A (BPA). Among them, only SDOM that had undergone freeze-thaw cycles exhibited a promotive effect on the photodegradation of BPA, with the most significant effect observed at −20°C. Illumination (ultraviolet light (UV) and natural light (NL)) consumed the chromophoric groups of SDOM, disrupted its intricate electron transfer structure, and reduced the production of •OH and Triplet-state dissolved organic matter ( 3 DOM∗). So, illumination, especially UV, significantly weakened its mediating effect on the photodegradation of BPA. Based on these findings above, RDOM through temperature increase and illumination potentially leads to an inhibition of the degradation rate of organic pollutants. Conversely, RDOM may exhibit an enhanced ability following a freeze-thaw process. This study is crucial for elucidating the environmental effects of RDOM.

Plant fatty acids (FAs) are critical components of lipids and play an important role in coping with pollution-induced stress. However, the relationship between the fluctuating changes of FAs and the toxic effects of pollutants is not clear. Here, we analyzed and identified 19 FAs, namely 14 medium and long chain fatty acids (MLCFAs) and 5 very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs). First, a positive correlation between plant biomass and LCFA content was observed. Changes in unsaturation were inversely related to cell membrane permeability, which serves as an indicator of the toxic effects. In particular, the use of herbicides led to a reduction in total FA content, but caused a significant increase in free fatty acids (FFAs), which facilitate oxidative stress. In addition, supplementation with exogenous FAs, particularly linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids, effectively alleviated the toxic inhibition. (R)-dichlorprop causes abnormal FA metabolism that can be reversed by ferrostatin-1, a ferroptosis inhibitor. Under (R)-dichlorprop exposure, the balance of FA unsaturation in plants is disrupted by inhibition of FA desaturase activity, ultimately leading to ferroptosis and disruption of cell membrane integrity. This study aims to enhance the understanding of the ecotoxic effects of herbicides by examining changes in FAs. The findings will provide a scientific basis for controlling environmental risks associated with hazardous substances. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Visibility analysis by light attenuation ratio recorded with portable camera at the full-scale hot smoke test site

Some countries have enacted the full-scale hot smoke test standards to verify the effectiveness of smoke extraction systems. Unfortunately, the judgment of most performed tests is based on vision and lacks scientific value. It is important to establish a scientific and quantifiable measurement system for visibility judgment in a large space. This paper analyzed the visibility values obtained through the light attenuation in a full-scale hot smoke test site. The quadratic regression relationships between the gray scale values and the attenuation ratios were derived. The visibility of the test site can be also obtained by grayscale analysis of recorded images. A qualified emergency direction light was used as a light source, and a closed-circuit television and a portable camera were adopted for image recording. These images were converted into grayscale pictures to obtain the gray scale values at the center of the bright spot. By comparing with the light attenuation ratio of the quantifiable measurement equipment in front of the light source, the results showed excellent relevance and demonstrated the applicability of the captured images. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
