Habitat modelling of escolar fish (Lepidocybium flavobrunneum, Smith 1843) in the southwestern Indian Ocean using remote sensing data

Escolar (Lepidocybium flavobrunneum) belongs to Gempylidae family, is a top predator species that plays a crucial role in the marine ecosystem. However, limited information is available regarding their spatial-temporal variations in habitat, while habitat suitability index (HSI) modelling has been widely used in recent years for conservation, fisheries, and ecology. We compared an Arithmetic Mean Model (AMM) and a Geometric Mean Model (GMM) to gain insights into their habitat distribution. Fishery data were collected from the southwestern Indian Ocean between 2010 and 2014. Ten oceanographic remote sensing data sets were compiled, and four of them were selected based on their higher R 2 values obtained from Generalized Additive Model (GAM), Boosted Regression Trees (BRT), and Random Forest (RF) analyses for constructing the model combination. Meanwhile, Suitability Index (SI) curves were employed to determine the habitat suitability range for escolar. environmental parameters were combined using a step-wise approach and applied for both AMM and GMM. The models were evaluated based on the Lowest Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) value. Eventually, AMM was chosen over GMM with the AIC value was 28.49 and 31.25, respectively. The selected model combination of AMM was Sea Surface Height (SSH), Oxygen (O), and Sea Surface Temperature (SST) meaning these parameters influenced the distribution of escolar. The SI curve of the chosen model indicated the habitat range for each parameter as follows: SSH (0.61–0.69 m), O (222–230 mmol m−3), and SST (18.7–21.1°C). The most suitable habitat for escolar was observed within the coordinates 36 ºS-30 ºS and 28 ºE-36 ºE. Thus, this method is demonstrated in a case study where just presence data are provided and the incorporation of remote sensing environmental factors is gathered. This result could help improve escolar fishery management in the southwestern Indian Ocean. © 2023 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading

Dry-season sources of riverine sediment from the tropical mixed urban-agricultural watershed of the Mun River Basin in northeastern Thailand

Northeastern(NE) Thailand is well recognized as the land for rice cropping and consequently, it is potentially contaminated with chemicals from soil fertilization, pest/weed control, and urban *** Mun River basin in NE Thailand principally is comprised of rice paddies and sedimentation in the river has been pronounced, but the studies on sediment source identification are limited. The current study aims to identify sediment sources in the Mun River basin and discuss possible impacts on ecosystems attributed to exposure to polluted sediment. The assessment relies upon physicochemical properties and heavy metal contents(iron(Fe), manganese(Mn), copper(Cu), chromium(Cr), nickel(Ni),and Zinc(Zn)) in the fine-grained sediment(<63 μm) taken from the Mun River basin and the Chi River in the dry season of 2020-2021. The findings revealed that the heavy metals in the sediment had not accumulated to levels of concern. Most sediment was from natural sources, including Fe-and Mn-rich sediment, Cr-dominant sediment, and Ni-and Cu-rich sediment. Fe-and Zn-rich sediment was, however, found in the urban watershed of Lam Ta Klong, and it could originate from mixed urban sources. Ferich sediment was predominant in the Mun River basin, which and could be a significant sink and source of toxic elements from agricultural and urban discharges. It is suggested that the toxic compounds in the sediment should be consistently monitored, whereas ecological and health risk assessment should be focused on the mobile forms.

This study uses Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) and Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) precipitation data to identify extreme precipitation intensity and frequency changes in Indonesia. Extreme precipitation calculations were performed using the Gumbel distribution and return period fitted to annual maxima data. Extreme precipitation and frequency of extreme events were compared between the historical period and the near-future period (2026–2055) and the far-future period (2070–2099) to identify changes. The results showed that there were changes in extreme precipitation in Indonesia both in intensity and frequency of occurrence. Extreme precipitation with a 5-year return period in Indonesia generally has a change value in the range of − 5 to + 25% with most areas likely to increase. The increased value reaches + 20% in the near-future period and + 40% in the far-future period. For the frequency of extreme precipitation above the 5-year return period in Indonesia, the change value is generally in the range of − 40 to + 120% with most areas likely to increase. The increased value reaches + 160% in the near-future period and + 200% in the far-future period. In the higher emission scenario (SSP5-8.5), the areas with higher values of increase will expand both in the change in intensity and frequency of occurrence. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Lithium vanadium oxide(Li_(3)VO_(4))has gained attention as an alternative anode material because of its higher theoretical capacity(592 mAh g^(−1)),moderate ionic conductivity(∼10^(−4)S cm^(−1)),and lower working voltage range(∼0.5–1.0 V ***/Li^(+))in comparison to other metal ***,there are disadvantages to using Li_(3)VO_(4)as an anode material,such as low initial Coulombic efficiency and poor rate performance that is attributed to its low electronic conductivity(<10^(−1)0 S cm^(−1)).In the present study,the synthesis of one-dimensional Li_(3)VO_(4)electrode was performed via a facile method by using oxidized vapor grown carbon fiber as a template and the formation of the outer shells of conductive carbon via chemical vapor deposition *** a half-cell configuration,the prepared Li_(3)VO_(4)composites exhib-ited an enhanced electrochemical performance with a reversible capacity of 516.2 mAh g^(−1)after 100 cycles at a rate of 0.5 C within the voltage range of 0.01–3.0 *** a high rate of 5 C,a large reversible capacity of 322.6 mAh g^(−1)was also observed after 500 *** full cell(LVO/VGCF16-C||LiCoO_(2))using LiCoO_(2)as the cathode showed competitive electrochemical performance,which demonstrates its high potential in commercial applications.

Plant fatty acids (FAs) are critical components of lipids and play an important role in coping with pollution-induced stress. However, the relationship between the fluctuating changes of FAs and the toxic effects of pollutants is not clear. Here, we analyzed and identified 19 FAs, namely 14 medium and long chain fatty acids (MLCFAs) and 5 very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs). First, a positive correlation between plant biomass and LCFA content was observed. Changes in unsaturation were inversely related to cell membrane permeability, which serves as an indicator of the toxic effects. In particular, the use of herbicides led to a reduction in total FA content, but caused a significant increase in free fatty acids (FFAs), which facilitate oxidative stress. In addition, supplementation with exogenous FAs, particularly linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids, effectively alleviated the toxic inhibition. (R)-dichlorprop causes abnormal FA metabolism that can be reversed by ferrostatin-1, a ferroptosis inhibitor. Under (R)-dichlorprop exposure, the balance of FA unsaturation in plants is disrupted by inhibition of FA desaturase activity, ultimately leading to ferroptosis and disruption of cell membrane integrity. This study aims to enhance the understanding of the ecotoxic effects of herbicides by examining changes in FAs. The findings will provide a scientific basis for controlling environmental risks associated with hazardous substances. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

During COVID-19 pandemic several countries have implemented quarantines in response to the virus’ spread, which was considered an emergency. Thailand was under a state of emergency from January to December 2020, which has had an impact on the state of environment. Based on real-time data from the Pollution Control Department, the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on PM2.5 pollution in Thailand was examined. Inverse Distance Weighted interpolation was used to generate a more accurate visual representation of the PM2.5 pollution through a spatial distribution of atmospheric pollutants across the provinces of Thailand. PM2.5 levels in all considered areas reduced considerably between 2017 and 2020, with the most significant decrease occurring during the lockdown period of April-July in 2020. As the pre-COVID-19 period occurred during late winter in Thailand, the monthly average PM2.5 concentrations in all selected provinces were gradually increased from December 2019 to March 2020. During the lockdown period, the concentration of PM2.5 was reduced in Pathum Thani (48.9%), Samut Sakhon (35.6%) Samut Prakarn (33.6%), and Bangkok (31.7%) The spatial–temporal distribution of the PM2.5 levels in Samut Sakhon and Samut Prakarn provinces were analyzed for October 2020, during the new normal period. The results showed a significant decrease in concentration of up to 31% compared to previous years where industrial operations were situated. This study showed that the government enforced lockdown during COVID-19 pandemic was beneficial in understanding the impact of reduced human activities on anthropogenic air pollutants’ concentrations. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

The Muara Beting coastal area on the north coast of Java, Indonesia, faces coastal erosion processes that gradually affect the decrease of mangrove land. That process causes the land to be extremely eroded and become closer to the Citarum River. The seawater intrusion occurs within the decreasing land mangroves. If erosion persists, the increased seawater intrusion might result in the convergence of the pond area with the Citarum River. This study aims to simulate and analyze how the "Building with Nature" building can be applied as a mitigation strategy through Delft3D simulations. Data was collected through field surveys, satellite image analysis, and library observations to evaluate the impact of the proposed solutions. The simulations used bathymetry, sediment characteristics, wind, tide, and river discharge measurements for input data. Apart from simulating natural conditions, several scenarios were also arranged based on the placement of permeable structures combined with the floodway. The best scenario was selected from where cumulative sedimentation and erosion and the cross-sectional depth show best. This study's findings will be intended to assist Muara Beting’s coastal community in reconstructing pond land that has been harmed by coastal erosion, allowing the locals to carry on with their pond-related livelihoods. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Microplastics in wastewater and sludge from centralized and decentralized wastewater treatment plants: Effects of treatment systems and microplastic characteristics

Domestic wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play a vital role in limiting the release of microplastics (MP) into the environment. This study examined MP removal efficiency from five centralized and four decentralized domestic WWTPs in Bangkok, Thailand. MP concentrations in wastewater and sludge were comparable between centralized and decentralized WWTPs, despite these decentralized WWTPs serving smaller populations and having limited treatment capacity. The elimination of MPs ranged from 50 to 96.8% in centralized WWTPs and 14.2–53.6% in decentralized WWTPs. It is noted that the retained MPs concentrations in sludge ranged from 20,000 to 228,100 MP/kg dry weight. The prevalence of synthetic fibers and fragments could be attributed to their pathways from laundry or car tires, and the accidental release of a variety of plastic wastes ended up in investigated domestic WWTPs. Removal of MPs between the centralized and decentralized WWTPs was influenced by several impact factors including initial MP concentrations, longer retention times, MP fragmentation, and variations of MP concentrations in sludge leading to different activated sludge process configurations. Sewage sludge has become a primary location for the accumulation of incoming microplastics in WWTPs. The MPs entering and leaving each unit process were varied due to the unique characteristics of MPs, and their different treatment efficiencies. While the extended hydraulic retention period in decentralized WWTPs decreased the MP removal efficacy, the centralized WWTP with the two-stage activated sludge process achieved the highest MP removal efficiency. © 2024 The Authors
