Exercise-induced local sweating: Greater reduction in women than men with sunscreen use

Sunscreens may affect thermoregulation and sweating during exercise in warm climates. In this study, we compared the effects of three sunscreens on local sweating rate (LSR) during exercise under controlled conditions (32°C, relative humidity 55%). Fifteen subjects (8 men, 7 women) underwent 20-min cycles in four randomized conditions: control (CON), sunscreen A (SSA), sunscreen B (SSB) and sunscreen C (SSC). LSR was measured by a patch on the scapular region (p <.001). CON showed higher LSR (182.21 μL/min·dm², CI95% 168 to 195 μL/min·dm²) compared to SSA (142.10 μL/min·dm², CI95% 128 to 155 μL/min·dm²), SSB (158.06 μL/min·dm², CI95% 144 to 171 μL/min·dm²), and SSC (159.00 μL/min·dm², CI95% 145 to 172 μL/min·dm²). In men, SSA showed lower LSR compared to CON, SSB, and SSC (p <.05). On the other hand, no statistically significant differences were found in LSR between SSB, SSC, and CON conditions. In women, CON was superior to all sunscreens in LSR (p <.001), and there was no difference between them (SSA, SSB, SSC, p >.05). Sunscreen reduced LSR during moderate exercise in a hot and moderate humidity environment compared to CON, especially SSA in men and all sunscreens in women. © 2024 The Author(s). There has been a growing appreciation for freezing of gait as a disabling symptom that causes a significant burden in Parkinson’s disease. Previous research has highlighted some of the key components that underlie the phenomenon, but these reductionist approaches have yet to lead to a paradigm shift resulting in the development of novel treatment strategies. Addressing this issue will require greater integration of multi-modal data with complex computational modeling, but there are a number of critical aspects that need to be considered before embarking on such an approach. This paper highlights where the field needs to address current gaps and shortcomings including the standardization of definitions and measurement, phenomenology and pathophysiology, as well as considering what available data exist and how future studies should be constructed to achieve the greatest potential to better understand and treat this devastating symptom.

Social distancing(SD)to prevent SARS-CoV-2(COVID-19)transmission reduced practices of physical activities(PA)and changed emotional conditions,but the relationship between PA and the emotions has to be further *** study aimed to analyze PA and the intensity of basic emotions during a period of social distancing in the State of S~ao Paulo,*** collection was performed using the snowball system and an online survey with questions about the minimum weekly frequency of 30-min moderate and/or vigorous activities(MVPA),intensity of basic emotions,and sociodemographic profile.A total of 704 volunteers participated;mean age 38.113.4 years,67.9%female,82.0%insufficiently practiced MVPA,and 37.9%of the group reported no weekly ***/fear was the emotion with the highest intensity in the study period.A significant association was observed between PA and intensity of happiness(rho=0.125;p<0.01)and a negative association between PA practice and intensity of anxiety/fear(rho=-0.090;p<0.05),sadness(rho=-0.134;p<0.01),and anger(rho?0.109;p<0.01).Also,an association was observed between anxiety/fear and social isolation(rho=0.082;p<0.05).These results suggest that public policies offering PA programs and psychological care are required to improve the quality of life of the population.

BackgroundAutism affects 1 in every 160 children in the world. It is estimated that there are about 2 million people within the spectrum in Brazil. Its diagnosis is based on the presentation of the disorder, since there is no biological marker, which led to the emergence of numerous international instruments for screening and more assertive diagnosis. In Brazil, the use of these instruments is limited by translation, validation, psychometric quality and by the large geographic dimension that can, for example, generate different motor repertoires among children of the same age group due to the great diversity between the regions of the country. So far, only one study used the Dimensional Inventory of Child Development Assessment (IDADI), created in Brazil, to assess fine motor skills in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but without including the population of the northern region of Brazil. ObjectivesTo compare the fine motor skills of children with ASD and those with typical development using the Dimensional Inventory for Child Development Assessment. MethodsThis is a descriptive and observational study with a cross-sectional design developed in Pará. Data collection was carried out by four researchers online or in person, divided into two groups: children with ASD and children with typical development. The instrument uses the parental report of mothers or other family members of daily contact with the child who had a clinical diagnosis (in all degrees) of Autistic Spectrum Disorder determined by a licensed professional (psychologist or physician), and the age group was used between 24 and 72 months. The group of typically developing children were in the same age group and scored less than 15 on the Social Communication Questionnaire, indicating no risk of ASD. Objective: To determine the cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) levels needed to avoid the Grim Reaper (Death) among older adults. We hypothesized that an above average peak oxygen uptake (VO_2peak) is needed for 70–77-year-old men and women to delay the encounter with Death. Design: Prospective cohort study. Setting: General population of older adults in Norway. Participants: 788 women and 777 men aged 70–77 years. Intervention: Clinical assessments, including a test of VO_2peak. Participants were categorised based on their baseline VO_2peak and changes after 1 year. This study explored associations between VO_2peak and 5-year all-cause mortality using Cox proportional hazard models. Main outcome measure: All-cause mortality. Results: Death caught up with 5.3 % of men and 3.7 % of women. Compared to unfit men and women, fewer men (Hazard Ratio [HR]: 0.34, 95 % Confidence Interval [CI] 0.15–0.78) and women (HR: 0.41, 95 % CI 0.17–0.98) classified as moderately fit encountered Death with no additional risk reduction among those classified as being more fit. It appears to be easier for the Grim Reaper to claim those in poorer physical condition, specifically VO_2peak levels <26.5 mL/kg/min for men and 22.2 mL/kg/min for women (corresponding to ≥85 % of the observed age- and sex-specific average). Conclusion: The Grim Reaper typically targets individuals with VO_2peak levels <26.5 mL/kg/min/ and <22.2 mL/kg/min when chasing male and female souls aged 70–77 years, respectively, reflecting his penchant for limited CRF. These data underscore the importance of maintaining or enhancing CRF throughout life, providing clear targets for clinicians in assessing patient CRF levels. INCREASING OLDER ADULTS’ VITALITY THROUGH A PRIMARY CARE INTERVENTION

BackgroundThe intrinsic capacity of the older adults is intertwined with the ability to perform activities of daily living independently and autonomously. The World Health Organization suggests that handgrip strength is an important measure of intrinsic ability. The measure of muscle strength decreases with advancing age and this measure is considered a low-cost and reliable predictor of declines in intrinsic capacity, morbidity, and mortality. ObjectivesTo evaluate the effects of an intervention protocol based on multimodal physical exercises, at moderate intensity, simultaneously with cognitive stimulation (dual-task), on upper limbs muscle strength in community-dwelling healthy older adults. Methods37 older adults, with no cognitive dysfunction, participated in the study. Participants were grouped into a Dual Task Exercise group (DTEx, n=23) and performed 24 sessions, twice a week, for 75 minutes, and a control group (CG, n=14) who received information on health education and did not perform physical exercises. To evaluate the muscle strength of the upper limbs, the handgrip test was used using a hydraulic dynamometer (Jamar®). Two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used for analysis hand grip strength and Bonferroni tests were used as post-hoc for within-group and between-group comparisons. The project was registered in the Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials (UTN code: U1111-1233-6349). ResultsThere was an interaction Group x Time for the handgrip strength, both for muscle strength on the right side (F (1.35) = 8.013 p ≤ 0.008, η2p = 0.186) and left side (F (1, 35) = 9.055, p ≤ 0.005, η2p = 0.206). After the intervention, the DTEx group showed greater handgrip strength on the right side (Assessment: 20.4 ± 1.4 kgf; Reassessment: 24.5 ± 1.2 kgf, p ≤ 0.001) and on the left side (Assessment: 18.3 ± 1.3 kgf; Reassessment: 22.2 ± 1.2 kgf; p ≤ 0.003). INTRODUCTION:Few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have investigated the effects of choral singing (CS) on older adults at-risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Extant RCTs on CS also lack an active control arm controlling for non-intervention-specific active components. METHODS:In this parallel-arm, open-label RCT, 200 community-dwelling older adults at-risk of cognitive decline were randomized to the treatment arm, i.e., CS, or the active control arm (i.e., health education program, i.e., HEP, matched with non-intervention-specific components). Both arms involved weekly 1-h group sessions held continuously for two years. We examined the a priori registered secondary outcomes, positive screens for depressive and anxiety disorders, at baseline, 1-year, and 2-year time-points, using linear-mixed models with intention-to-treat. RESULTS:Compared to the HEP, CS participants experienced similar decreased odds of positive screens for depressive and anxiety disorders throughout all the time-points, though different trajectories. DISCUSSION:In contrary to previous studies using passive controls reporting positive outcomes, compared to HEP as an active comparator, CS is as effective as HEP in delaying progression to clinically significant depressive and anxiety disorders in at-risk community-dwelling older adults. Our findings highlight the critical importance of incorporating an intervention-components-matched comparison arm in non-pharmacological interventions. Effects of multicomponent training based on RPE on functional capacity and body composition in institutionalized elderly undergoing physiotherapeutic treatment: A randomized controlled clinical trial

The aim of the current study was to verify the effects of adding multicomponent training based on the rate of perceived exertion (RPE) on physical functional capacity and body composition in institutionalized older adults undergoing physiotherapeutic treatment. Twenty-three older people (12♀) were randomly allocated in blocks, according to their classification level in the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), into a control group (CG, n = 11) and a multicomponent training group (MT, n = 12). The primary outcome measures were evaluated by the SPPB. Secondary outcomes were performance in the TUG test and 6-meter walking speed test, and body composition analysis. For all analyses, we used ANOVA two way with Bonferroni correction, and estimation statistics, which focus on the effect size of the experiment/intervention, as opposed to significance testing. Regarding the effect size (Cohen's D) in the intergroup analysis, the SPPB score showed a large effect favoring the multicomponent training group ( d = 0.803 [CI 95.0 % -0.387, 1.89]; p = 0.0996). Similar responses were observed for the 6 m walking speed test, showing a large effect ( d = -0.857 [CI 95.0 % - 1.53, 0.176]; p = 0.768), and TUG ( d = -1.18 [CI 95.0 % -2.08, -0.206]; p = 0.0254. In the Body composition outcomes, the phase angle ( d = 0.212 [CI 95.0 % -0.721. 1.17]; p = 0.616) and appendicular skeletal muscle mass ( d = -0.242 [CI 95.0 % -1.15.0.659]; p = 0.56) showed a small effect size. The current study demonstrated that the multicomponent training program associated with the physiotherapy program produces effects that can increase SPPB scores, as well improving physiotherapy performance.

Placebo and Nocebo Effects in Motor Performance: An Overview of Reviews

OBJECTIVES:To assess and synthesize the effect size and quality of the literature on the placebo and nocebo effects on motor performance and motor-related perceptive responses. DESIGN:Umbrella review. DATA SOURCES:Medline, Embase, Lilacs, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews for peer-reviewed literature, PROSPERO for protocols, and the Open Access Theses and Dissertations for gray literature. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES:Population-human participants with varied health conditions; intervention: placebo; control: no treatment or active intervention; outcome: motor performance (primary) and perceptual variables (secondary); study design-ystematic reviews with or without meta-analysis. RESULTS:In total, 3432 records were gathered from searches, resulting in 13 eligible reviews after screening. These reviews encompassed 247 original studies, with 221 focusing on the placebo effect and 26 on the nocebo effect. Among all eligible systematic reviews, five conducted meta-analysis with 5036 participants, and one provided a summary of effect sizes reported by the original studies with 1215 participants. The reviews reported small to large effects of placebo (SMD = 0.09-0.93) and nocebo (SMD = 0.37-1.20), and only two conducted the GRADE assessment. CONCLUSION:We found varied placebo and nocebo effects on motor performance, likely due to the poor quality of the methodology used by most reviews, highlighting the need for well-conducted systematic reviews on the placebo and nocebo phenomena.
