The sexual maturation in all mammals is the period in which the quiescent gonads are activated by gonadotropins from anterior pituitary, increasing the secretion of sexual hormones. Sexual maturation it is also related with the development of several other body features such as body mass and maturation of the circulatory, skeletal and hematopoietic systems. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the function of neutrophils submitted to in vivo lower and higher concentration of testosterone (sexually immature: 60 days and sexually mature: 90 days). Using different approaches we evaluated cell viability and function and gene expression in rat neutrophils from 60 and 90 days-old animals. Neutrophils from 90 days-old rats showed a decrease in phagocytic and fungicidal capacity, without change in cellular viability. Additionally, we verified that sexual maturation induced increase in production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) and also in TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-10 cytokines. In conclusion, our data suggest that increase in testosterone levels induced significant alteration in neutrophil function, impairing phagocytic capacity.

Introduction: Hearing loss causes difficulties in speech understanding, which leads away from the family and social environment. This isolation may be associated with depressive disorders. Type of study: clinical prospective. Objective: To determine the association between hearing loss and depression in a group of non-institutionalized elderly. Method: The sample consisted of individuals aged over 60 years, undergoing complete audiological evaluation and screening for depressive symptoms with the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Results: We evaluated 54 elderly, 26 (48.1%) were female and 28 (51.9%) males. It was found that 39 (72.2%) had hearing thresholds change, and 17 (31.5%) with mild hearing loss and 22 (40.7%) with moderate hearing loss. Were evident signs of depression in 25 elderly (46.3%), and 22 (40.7%) had hearing loss. Data analysis showed an association between hearing loss and depression (p = 0.016). Although not significant (p = 0.18), the association between the degree of hearing loss was positive in relation to the severity of the signs of depression. Conclusion: In elderly people surveyed, there was a strong association between hearing loss and signs of depression and tendency to be an association between the degree of hearing loss and the severity of the signs of depression.

There is a need for the prevention of upper extremity injuries that affect a large number of competitive baseball *** available evidence alludes to three possible ways to prevent these injuries:1) regulation of unsafe participation factors,2) implementation of exercise intervention to modify suboptimal physical characteristics,and 3) instructional intervention to correct improper pitching *** these three strategies,instruction of proper pitching technique is under-explored as a method of injury ***,the purpose of this review was to explore the utility of pitching technique instruction in prevention of pitching-related upper extremity injuries by presenting evidence linking pitching technique and pitching-related upper extremity injuries,as well as identifying considerations and potential barriers in pursuing this approach to prevent *** kinematic parameters measured using laboratory-based motion capture system have been linked to excessive joint loading,and thus pitching-related upper extremity *** we gain more knowledge about the influence of pitching kinematics on joint loading and injury risk,it is important to start exploring ways to modify pitching technique through instruction and feedback while considering the specific skill components to address,mode of instruction,target population,duration of program,and ways to effectively collaborate with coaches and parents.

背景:中风作为一种疾病,中医早在2 000多年前即有诸多经典著作对其进行描述。然而,大部分有关针刺对中风后遗症患者功能恢复的疗效的临床对照试验未能得出针刺具有长期疗效的结论。并且,很多试验以表面肌电图测量患者骨骼肌的电活动以评定针刺刺激的即时疗效的结论也不一致。这些研究结果对针刺在神经肌肉水平的作用提出了质疑。本研究旨在比较徒手针刺影响健康人和中风后肌张力亢进患者的肱二头肌功能及力量的即时效果。方法与设计:本研究拟开展含有4个平行对照组的随机单盲临床试验。分别针刺健康受试者及中风后遗症痉挛性轻瘫患者的曲池(LI11)及天泉(PC2)2个穴位。表面肌电图测量针刺对于肌肉功能的即时疗效及肱二头肌的等长张力作为主要结局指标。次要结局指标包括每组中医证候的出现频率及频率分布。讨论:本研究的临床试验设计在方法学上较之前的类似试验有些改善。预计这一研究能够证实针刺刺激对健康人及中风后遗症患者的神经肌肉的作用。临床试验注册:巴西临床试验注册(***,注册号为RBR-5g7xqh).

The blind sportsmen have recorded significant improvements in their performances since their first participation in the Paralympics Games in Toronto 1976. In athletics, mainly running, they have to be guided by other athletes who have to follow them closely, especially in a competitive run, where the distance between them cannot exceed 50 cm, that is, between the visually impaired and their guide athlete. Although many guides are provided with an excellent preparation, the gradual growth of the blind athletes' performance will lead us to a new problem, which will have to be solved. Who will lead the blind athletes without limiting them? Thinking about offering another possibility that allows the visually impaired athlete to move freely in sports activities, this study aimed to develop the Remote Guide. The Remote Guide is an equipment which uses the principles of model airplane, which is coupled to a headset and put in contact with the surface skin, guides the individual through tactile and auditory signals to the directions left, right and also allow them to stop. For checking the coefficient of validity and objectivity of the Remote Guide, there was a correlation of Person. For this test was used the 30 meters dash. Six men, disabled athletes in the Paralympics level, visually impaired, accompanied by their guide athletes have performed this distance. Concerning the results, there werent statistically significant differences between the averages results from the Remote Guide and the data collected by disabled athletes and their guides. The validity of the device has showed a correlation of r 0.9361. By this way, the Remote Guide has an excellent reliability coefficient, which can be used for giving support to unleash the disabled athletes' performance. © 2011 IEEE.
