Mobile devices use traditional authentication processes, which are vulnerable and unsuitable for highly dynamic environments, such as ubiquitous and pervasive environments. Therefore, new approaches are necessary in such environments. These approaches must be (i) context-aware by considering environmental and operational characteristics, restrictions of devices and information provided by sensors within the pervasive space;and (ii) customizable for balancing the systems proactivity with the control that the user wants to have over his systems. In this paper, it is presented an approach that provides a recommendation system based on the user behavior and the pervasive space where he belongs. The user behavior is defined by the actions and events that compose the activity that is being performed. The experimental results indicate (a) a dynamic and autonomic mechanism, which is more suitable for authenticating users in mobile and pervasive environments, and (b) significant efficiency to detect authentication anomalies by using a similarity model and a spatio-temporal permutation model. © 2011 IEEE.

Background: Understanding how to successfully deal with human and technical aspects involved in Software Process Improvement (SPI) programs is a challenging issue. Technical aspects are not enough to guarantee the success of activities. Human factors (e.g., experiences, opinions and perceptions) impact the effectiveness of SPI programs. Aim: this paper aims to improve our current understanding on how human aspects can influence SPI programs from the point of view of the professionals involved in such efforts. We compare our findings with the results of previous studies in order to analyze the different contexts in which human aspects influence SPI. Method: We conducted a qualitative study in the context of small companies involved in SPI programs in Amazonas State in Brazil based on the Brazilian Maturity Model - ***. We used semi-structural interviews with software engineers. Results: We identified findings about eleven of the fourteen investigated human aspects. We identified new characteristics that motivate actors to get involved in SPI programs. Finally, while previous research indicated that the process of individual decision making as a negative aspect, we identified this as a positive aspect. Conclusions: Despite the differences in companies' size and maturity models, our findings corroborate many of the important results of previous case studies. The consistency of the presented results with previous research in different organizations, teams, and countries suggest that these results are true for software engineering in general. However, there were differences related to the motivating factors and the perception of the individual decision making. Ensemble methods combine multiple models into a single framework for coping better with Machine Learning tasks. Recently, the well-known Bagging approach was adapted to solve biclustering problems, where the objective is to find large sub-groups of samples and attributes of the data matrix with the samples showing high correlation over the attributes. In this paper, aiming at the generation of more diverse and high-quality biclusters to be fused through an ensemble perspective, we have adopted a well-known multimodal Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm, namely NichePSO. In particular, the study brings a preliminary comparative assessment of the biclustering results delivered by NichePSO operating alone and by two ensemble settings (one of which is Bagging) operating on the biclusters produced by NichePSO. The assessment was done based on bioinformatics and collaborative filtering datasets, and the results achieved so far reveal the usefulness of ensembling the repertory of biclusters produced by NichePSO.

Interferon β is associated with type 1 interferon-inducible gene expression in dermatomyositis

Objectives To determine whether type 1 interferon (IFN) proteins in blood are associated with downstream type 1 IFN-inducible gene expression in blood from patients with myositis. Methods IFN alpha, IFN beta and IFN omega concentrations were measured by ELISA in 129 blood samples (from 93 patients with dermatomyositis (DM), inclusion body myositis, polymyositis and other muscle diseases and from 36 healthy volunteers). Their concentrations were correlated with their ability to stimulate type 1 IFN-inducible gene transcription in a functional assay for 123 of these samples and the type 1 IFN-inducible blood gene expression from 70 of the same samples. Results Blood IFN beta concentration was uniquely associated with DM (p=0.0004), detectable in 64% of samples from patients with untreated or minimally treated DM and 35% of all DM samples compared with 6% of other inflammatory myopathy and 6% of healthy volunteer samples. Blood IFN beta, but not IFN alpha or IFN omega, correlated with high blood type 1 IFN-inducible gene expression (p=0.01). Healthy volunteer samples with a high ELISA signal for IFN alpha and IFN omega lacked functional bioassay activity and such a signal was confirmed as artefactual. Conclusion Elevated blood IFN beta protein concentration is associated with DM. Systemic and local production of IFN beta might contribute to, but may not fully explain, the marked overproduction of type 1 IFN-inducible transcripts and proteins seen in DM muscle and blood.

Introduction PomD results in an overall response rate of 30% and median PFS of 3.8 months in patients with prior lenalidomide (L) and bortezomib (Vij et al. ASCO 2012). We thought to investigate the addition of oral weekly Cy to PomD in patients with LRMM. We have previously reported that the recommended phase II dose of Cy with standard dose Pom D was 400 mg PO D1, 8, 15. We herein report aggregated results of the phase I/II trial. Patients Eligible patients had relapsed and refractory myeloma after at least 2 prior therapies and were L refractory. Patients had a platelet count≥50,000/ mm3 and ANC≥1,000/mm3 (patients with ≥50% bone marrow plasmacytosis were allowed if platelet count ≥30,000/mm3 and ANC could be supported with GCSF during screening and therapy). In the phase II portion, patients were randomized (1:1) to receive pomalidomide 4mg PO D1-21, dexamethasone 40 mg PO D1,8,15,22 (20mg if older than 75 years) with or without oral cyclophosphamide 400 mg PO D1, 8, 15 of a 28 days cycle. Patients randomized to PomD were allowed to cross over to the PomCyD in the event of disease progression. Thromboprophylaxis was mandated with aspirin, warfarin or LMWH. Responses were assessed per the IMWG criteria with the addition of minimal response (MR, ≥25% decrease in serum component). Results Between 1/2012 and 7/2013, 70 patients were enrolled (10 in the phase I portion) and 30 patients were randomized to the PomCyD and 30 to PomD. The median age was 65 years (range 44-80) and 41 (58%) were male. The median number of prior therapies was 5 (range 2-14). All patients were lenalidomide refractory and 55 (79%) were refractory to proteasome inhibitors. 19 patients (27%) had high risk cytogenetics (del 17p, t(4;14), t(14;16)) of which 12 patients (17%) had del 17p. In addition, 15 (21%) had 1q21 trisomy or tetrasomy. Aggregated responses are reported for the cohort. The aim of this study is to assess the Harmony Search (HS) meta-heuristic and some of its variants when submitted to benchmark continuous optimization problems to reveal whether and how such variants change the patterns of search behavior exhibited by the canonical version. For this purpose, a new Visual Mining tool based on the Viz3D algorithm was developed to aid in the visualization of how the HS algorithms effectively explore the search space. The results achieved provide evidence that the gains in performance usually promoted by the HS variants are indeed related to noticeable modifications in the search behavior as displayed by the original version.

A multivariate modelling may involve a set of multivariate functions. A vector valued function structure can be used to mathematically express the given problem and each multivariate function can be considered as an element of this vector. This work aims to construct a new approach representing the elements of this vector structure in terms of less‐variate functions to reduce the computational complexity. For this purpose, a new method based on the plain High Dimensional Model Representation (HDMR) philosophy is developed. The basic concepts of this method and several illustrative numerical implementations are given here.
