Telemedicine is a very important area in medical field that is expanding daily motivated by many researchers interested in improving medical applications. In Brazil was started in 2005, in the State of Santa Catarina has a developed server called the CyclopsDCMServer, which the purpose to embrace the HDF for the manipulation of medical images (DICOM) using a distributed file system. Since then, many researches were initiated in order to seek better performance. Our approach for this server represents an additional parallel implementation in I/O operations since HDF version 5 has an essential feature for our work which supports parallel I/O, based upon the MPI paradigm. Early experiments using four parallel nodes, provide good performance when compare to the serial HDF implemented in the CyclopsDCMServer.

We aim to predict radiological observations using computationally-derived imaging features extracted from CT images. Our dataset consists of 79 portal venous phase liver CT images containing lesions identified and annotated by a radiologist using a controlled vocabulary of 76 semantic terms. Computationally-derived features were extracted describing intensity, texture, shape, and edge sharpness. Linear discriminative analysis, logistic regression and LASSO were explored to predict the radiological observations using computational features. The approach was evaluated by leave one out cross-validation. Informative radiological observations such as lesion enhancement, hyper vascular attenuation, and homogeneous retention were discovered to be well-predicted by computational features. By exploiting relationships between computable and semantic features, this approach could lead to more accurate and efficient radiology reporting. © 2011 IEEE.

Numerical model and finite element analysis of an independent wire rope core (IWRC) which is bent over a sheave is investigated in this paper. 3-D solid model of the IWRC is constructed by using mesh generation techniques first. Then, problem of wire rope bending over sheave is considered. Finite element model is constructed and analyzed for a wire rope bent over sheave problem here. Two different lengths of IWRCs are analyzed for bending problem, a 9mm and a 300mm lengths respectively. Force distribution within an IWRC is presented by obtained wire-by-wire based numerical results. This analysis gives insight of the wire rope behavior while it is bent over sheave. Using the proposed analysis technique, stress distributions within an IWRC can be obtained for each wire composing the whole geometry.

Design is a knowledge intensive activity, which depends on information to be undertaken. Previous designs, recent innovations, new techniques and materials must be taken into account when working on a new project, whatever its nature. Therefore, retrieving appropriate information is of paramount importance to the design process. Information retrieval is an established field, which has seen great progress in recent years. However, as the amount of unstructured information available increases, it becomes harder to retrieve the most relevant information using standard techniques and, frequently, users end up with results that don't fulfill their information needs. In this paper, we present an approach to improve retrieval using query expansion through ontologies allied to faceted navigation. We constructed the Ontoogle tool, which uses an ontology describing a domain to expand the query and define result ranking and presentation using Faceted Navigation. This proposal was evaluated in a case study and the results indicate that this approach contributes to increased satisfaction and confidence of users during their search process.

The U.S. Air Force is currently in the process of building an Airborne Network (AN), where the nodes are a set of heterogeneous, highly mobile, Airborne Networking Platforms (ANPs) - such as satellites, airplanes and unmanned aerial vehicles. Mobility pattern of nodes in a mobile network has significant impact on the coverage and connectivity properties of the network. The level of reliability needed for continuous operation of an AN may be difficult to achieve through a completely infrastructure-less mobile ad hoc networks. In an earlier paper, we proposed an architecture for an AN where a set of ANPs form the backbone of the AN. In this architecture, the ANPs may be viewed as mobile base stations with predictable and well-structured flight paths and the combat aircrafts on a mission as mobile clients. In this paper we consider the AN scenario where a part of the network might not be operational due to enemy attack and/or jamming. We consider faults that are spatially correlated (or region-based), that is faults due to an enemy attack are confined to a region. The goal is to design a robust AN so that no matter which region in the deployment area fails and at what time, the surviving nodes of the network will remain connected and be able to communicate with each other. We propose an algorithm that finds the minimum transmission range necessary to ensure network connectivity irrespective of location of the fault region and the time of the failure.

Events that threatens the status quo must be appropriately managed in order to reduce risk and bring the situation back to normal in a speedy fashion. In general, there is a lack of up to date information in emergency situations, this could be alleviated through the use of contextual information generated by social media sites. In this paper, we propose a model for social media information collection, which could be used by official organizations as an alternative communication channel aimed at reducing the distance between society and the command room.

Scenarios are cornerstones of emergency plan development because they help emergency managers envision a hypothetical real situation that may occur in the future. Scenarios are composed of events, but this is not enough to reach their entire potential. The use of scenario variables along with CIA-ISM approach can be used to support the generation and interrelation of events, expanding thereby the analysis of a scenario with situations closest to reality. The more people involved in generation, the better is the result (scenario) reached. This first step of a work-in-progress in emergency plan generation aims at facilitating the collaborative scenario creation by emergency experts with the adoption of both, variables and the CIA-ISM.

Purpose of the study is to apply SCFBP and ART methods on a ring array ultrasound tomography system based on time of flight. The study was conducted with numerical and experimental object by 16 positions in circular phantom. The data set of ring array was rearranged and interpolated into parallel scheme to reconstructed by SCFBP and ART methods. The result indicated that rearrangement and interpolation is feasible to use SCFBP methods, improve speed and reconstructed image quality on ART methods.

Identifying transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs) is crucial for understanding the mechanism of transcriptional regulation. It is known that transcription factors (TFs) often cooperate to regulate genes. While traditional approaches can be used to discover binding motifs of a group of co-regulated genes, they often fail to accurately assign motifs to the corresponding TFs. Here, we consider two TFs together to infer their TFBSs and their synergistic relationship simultaneously. The basic idea is that if two TFs interact, their TFBSs, if distinct, would be conserved across species and coincided in the promoter regions of the genes they co-regulated. Applying our method to Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromatin immunoprecipitation data, we predicted 110 TF pairs with statistically significant motif assignments. A majority of these TF pairs have literature support to be synergistic, and the designated motifs to TFs match well with their known consensus. We further examined the synergism of predicted TF pairs in seven experimental conditions using ANOVA, and identified significant interactions. © 2011 IEEE.
