Node failures in Wireless Sensor Networks composed by static sensor nodes are common due to the nature of the sensor devices and the usually harsh environments in which they are deployed. Node failures can diminish the performance of the network as a whole, thus affecting its functionality in delivering the desired services. For instance, significant regions can become uncovered due to failure of several nearby nodes. This paper reports a study about the use of mobile sensor nodes acting in cooperation with static ones in order to fill gaps created by faulty static nodes. The proposed fault handling mechanism presents alternative policies with pros and cons, depending on the user priorities imposed to the system and the occurrence of failures. A discussion about this topic is presented based on results obtained by simulation of the proposed mechanisms.

The healthcare workforce is increasingly moving towards the global adoption of computer applications and technology for effective and efficient delivery of healthcare services. This emphasizes the need to integrate the use of information technology especially the electronic medical records (EMR) into the learning process of the health professions student, thereby exposing them to the use of EMR at each level of their studies;therefore, the medical students would be familiar with and better prepared for the use of the complex technologies for effective medical operations as they enter the workforce. Despite the growing importance of EMR, health professions students in medical schools in the US have been given little or no hands-on training on electronic medical records during their course of training. Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in Florida USA has six health care professions colleges, including medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, and other allied health professionals;and has been an ideal ground for collaborative projects in teaching and training. This NSU-Nursing Simulation Lab EMR project, with an initial focus on the nursing students, was a collaborative effort between the graduate students in the Medical informaticsprogram and Nursing program at NSU. As a practicum requirement, the medical informatics graduate students assessed the needs of the nursing simulation laboratory for the electronic medical records;based on the analysis, the graduate students developed and implemented the customized EMR for the nursing students and faculty training. The platforms of Microsoft Access, SQL statements and Visual Basic Application language were used to provide a practical and interactive electronic medical record for the nursing simulation experience. MicroRNAs, by regulating the expression of hundreds of target genes, play critical roles in developmental biology and the etiology of numerous diseases, including cancer. As vast amounts of microRNA expression profile data are now publicly available, the integration of those data sets with gene expression profiles represents an extremely active area of life science research. However, the ability to conduct genome wide microRNA-mRNA (gene) integration currently requires sophisticated, high-end informatics tools, significant expertise in bioinformatics and computer science to carry out the complex integration analysis. In addition, increased computing infrastructure capabilities are essential in order to accommodate large data sets. In this study, we have extending BioVLAB cloud workbench to develop an environment for the integrated analysis of microRNA and mRNA expression data, named BioVLAB-MMIA. The workbench facilitates computations on the Amazon EC2 and S3 resources orchestrated by XBaya Workflow Suite. The advantages of BioVLAB-MMIA over the web-based MMIA system include: 1) readily expanded as new computational tools become available; 2) easily modifiable by re-configuring graphic icons in the workflow; 3) on-demand cloud computing resources can be used on an as needed basis; 4) distributed orchestration supports complex and long running workflows asynchronously.
