At the software development cycle, it is in the requirements analysis phase that most of the problems that can compromise the delivery time and the development and maintenance costs must be identified and resolved. In general, the requirements obtained in this phase have different relationships with each other. Some of these relationships, commonly called negative interactions, make difficult or impossible the progress of some activities of the development process. The detection of interactions between requirements is an important activity that may prevent some of these problems and avoid their propagation throughout the remainder activities. Most of the existent research in this area only focuses on the requirements phase, mainly in the identification of conflict and/or inconsistency interactions. This paper presents a semi-formal event-based approach to model and identify the interactions between requirements, investigating the interactions that influence the other phases of the software development process.

This work reports the assessment of time-shifts (TS) from backscattered ultrasound (BSU) signals when large temperature variations (up to 15 ∘ C) were induced in a gel-based phantom. The results showed that during cooling temperature is linear with TS at a rate of approximately 74 ns/ ∘ C. However during a complete heating/cooling cycle, the relation is highly non-linear. This can be explained by the fact that during cooling the temperature distribution is more uniform. Another problem to report is that TS is very sensitive to external movements.

In the present study, we introduce an experimental analysis conducted over two Multicriteria Decision Aid (MCDA) classification methods that have been successfully applied to real world problems. Different from other studies on MCDA classifiers, which put more emphasis on the development of new methods, this work compares the effectiveness of two MCDA nominal classifiers under the same conditions. In such regard, we developed a customized genetic algorithm to calibrate their control parameters automatically under some different sets of reference alternatives, also known as prototypes. Moreover, the experiments we have realized so far, involving different datasets, reveal that there are still some gaps in existing MCDA methods that can lead to an improvement of the methodology for the classification problems. We understand that this sort of empirical assessment is interesting as it reveals how robust/sensitive the MCDA classifiers could be to the choice of cut-off thresholds and prototypes for distinct problems. ©2009 IEEE.

This paper presents a control system design method based on numerical computation with highly guaranteed accuracy using multiple-precision arithmetic. By using the proposed methods, it is possible to guarantee the numerical quality about the design of control system with the very high accuracy which is impossible to compute by usual double precision arithmetic. We also propose a method to find the controller which minimizes an evaluation function for the design specification quickly by using multiple-precision arithmetic and Krawczyk method. And, this paper applies the proposed method to LQ control problem. © 2009 SICE.

The paper developed a block-wise approach for ICA algorithms which can improve the computational efficiency of ICA without the degradation of performance for the separation of biomedical signals. Source signals including electrocardiogram (ECG), electromyogram (EMG) and 60-Hz sinusoid are linearly mixed for experimental tests. The mean-square errors (MSE) between the original sources and the separated signals are calculated for the evaluation of separation performance. These results demonstrated that the proposed block-wise approach can achieve the desired separation performance of signals in a more efficient way.

We analyzed gene expression in neurons from 16 cases divided into four groups, ie, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated dementia (HAD)/HIV encephalitis (HAD/HIVE), HAD alone, HIVE alone, and HIV positive alone. We produced the neurons using laser capture microdissection from cryopreserved basal ganglia (specifically globus pallidus). Gene expression in pooled neurons from each case was analyzed on GE CodeLink Microarray chips with 55,000 gene fragments per chip. One-way analysis of variance showed significant changes in expression of 197 genes among the four groups (P < 0.005). The three groups, ie, HAD/HIVE, HAD alone, and HIVE alone, were compared with the HIV-positive group using Fisher's least significant difference test, and associated gene expression changes were assigned to each of the three comparisons. Identified genes were associated with 159 functional categories and many of the genes had more than one function. The functional groups included adhesion, amyloid, apoptosis, channel complex, cell cycle, chaperone, chromatin, cytokine, cytoskeleton, metabolism, mitochondria, multinetwork detection protein, sensory perception, receptor, ribosome, noncoding miRNA, signaling, synapse, transcription factor, homeobox, transport, multidrug resistance, and ubiquitin cycle. Several genes were associated with other neurodegenerative and developmental diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, and diGeorge syndrome. Thus, a wide range of dysregulated biochemical processes was reported in neuroanatomically precise neurons. This line of investigation is useful and provides specific information about gene expression dysfunction in NeuroAIDS. © 2011 Shapshak et al, publisher and licensee Dove Medical Press Ltd.

The main knowledge management challenges are to capture, store and reuse contextual knowledge generated during interactions that occur daily in an organization. In this paper, we propose an activity context-aware architecture to support knowledge management in working processes. The required features for this architecture are processing, reasoning and sharing contextual knowledge involving information about activities performed. We also present results from evaluation of our proposal — A-CoBrA — for a specific domain.

Are socially exclusive values embedded in the avatar creation interfaces of MMORPGs?

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to show how both the presentation and limitation of visual choices in massively multiplayer online role/playing games (MMORPG) avatar creation interfaces tends to exclude or favor different real life social groups. Design/methodology/approach – A novel method combining both quantitative and critical analysis of the syntagmatic/paradigmatic structure of MMORPG avatar creation interfaces is used to inform the findings of this study. Findings – This study concludes that as cultural interfaces, current fantasy themed MMORPGs remediate socially exclusive values both from fantasy literature and from their own game lore. The socially exclusive values deal largely with extreme and immutable racial and sexual dimorphism. Research limitations/implications – Interfaces which present users with color palettes and/or smooth slider/based body modifiers do not lend themselves well to this method of analysis. In addition to this, only a handful of the popular MMORPGs are analyzed within the body of this work. Practical implications – This paper demonstrates that MMORPG players and designers need to be more aware about how they are constructing and embedding social values in their worlds. Avatars are critical conduits for online social dynamics and embedding socially exclusive values may transfer negative ideologies from old media to new. Originality/value – This paper offers one of the earliest critiques of embedded values in avatar creation interfaces of MMORPGs. The paper aims to begin discussion on an overlooked area of now popular media that has not received any critical attention regarding its embedded messages of social inclusiveness or exclusiveness. © 2009, Emerald Group Publishing Limited

BACKGROUND: Engaging future engineers is a central topic in everyday conversations on engineering education. Considerable investments have been made to make engineering more engaging, recruit and retain aspiring engineers, and to design an education to prepare future engineers. However, the impact of these efforts has been less than intended. It is imperative that the community reflects on progress and sets a more effective path for the future. PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to map a new innovation landscape for what it means to engage future engineers. This is a theoretically grounded divergent-thinking effort to enable a broader space of high impact innovations for engaging future engineers. SCOPE/METHOD: A multiple perspectives methodology drawing from innovation, cross-disciplinary, and boundary work frameworks was used to make visible multiple facets of engaging future engineers. Scholars from diverse communities of thought and discourse were selected to present interparadigmatic perspectives, act as boundary agents, challenge and transform current ways of thinking, and illustrate new opportunities for engineering education innovation. CONCLUSIONS: A new innovation landscape for engaging future engineers is needed, one that emphasizes epistemological development and social justice, new configurations on engineering thinking and connecting to the formative years of development, the entwinement of engineering knowing and being, and mutually informing consequences for opening up a broader space for *** also need to adopt strategies and tools for using a multiple perspectives approach to better understand complex engineering education problems. © 2011 ASEE.
