Cluster analysis is used in several research areas to classify data sets in groups by their similar characteristics. Metaheuristic-based techniques, such as Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), have been applied in order to increase the clustering algorithm performance. GA and ACO-based clustering algorithms are capable of efficiently and automatically forming natural groups from a pre-defined number of clusters. This paper presents a GA and an ACO algorithm to the clustering problem. Both algorithms were refined using local search in order to improve the clustering accuracy. The results are compared on numeric UCI databases.

Cytobank is a Web-based application for storage, analysis, and sharing of flow cytometry experiments. Researchers use a Web browser to log in and use a wide range of tools developed for basic and advanced flow cytometry. In addition to providing access to standard cytometry tools from any computer, Cytobank creates a platform and community for developing new analysis and publication tools. Figure layouts created on Cytobank are designed to allow transparent access to the underlying experiment annotation and data processing steps. Since all flow cytometry files and analysis data are stored on a central server, experiments and figures can be viewed or edited by anyone with the proper permission, from any computer with Internet access. Once a primary researcher has performed the initial analysis of the data, collaborators can engage in experiment analysis and make their own figure layouts using the gated, compensated experiment files. The identification of nonlinear systems with artificial neural networks models has been successfully used in many applications. Most processes in industry are characterized by nonlinear and time-varying behavior. In this context, the identification of mathematical models for nonlinear systems is vital in many fields of engineering. The Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBF-NN) is a powerful approach for nonlinear identification and can be improved using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) approaches. This paper presents a multivariable nonlinear system identification using RBF-NN combined with standard PSO and Constriction Factor PSO (CFPSO) approaches in order to determine the RBF-NN parameters. RBF-NN is considered to be a good choice for black-box modeling problems due to its rapid learning capacity and, therefore, has been applied successfully to nonlinear time series modeling and nonlinear identification. On the other hand, PSO was inspired by the choreography of bird flocks and fish schools and can be seen as a distributed behavior algorithm that performs multidimensional search. Furthermore, promising simulation results from performance analysis of the proposed RBF-NN with PSO training approaches are presented and discussed in this paper showing promising results.

A well know problem in the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) research area is the usage of appropriate strategies to setup the sensor nodes such that they may accomplish sensing missions. This problem refers to the selection of appropriate nodes to perform the different tasks required to the missions' accomplishment and may be thus characterized as an instance of the task and resource allocation problem. Traditional approaches consider pre-planned strategies, which are not flexible to deal with changes in the network and environment operating conditions. This paper presents an enhanced agent-oriented strategy, which consists of a usage of mobile intelligent agents to disseminate missions and nodes' information over the network, as well as stationary software agents installed in the sensor nodes to provide advanced reasoning apparatus for decision making purposes. The proposed enhancement complements the original agent-based approach with robustness features required to overcome extreme adverse conditions in which an ordinary WSN presents poor results. Results from simulations provide evidences of the efficiency of the complete enhanced approach.

Impact of asthma 101 training on level of nursing students' knowledge

The Asthma 101 training, developed by the American Lung Association, was offered in 2009 to 93 senior bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) students. It was offered again in 2010 to 65 senior BSN students enrolled at the University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg, Texas. The training included both a pretest and posttest to evaluate changes in level of knowledge. Nursing students who were trained in 2009 participated in an asthma study offering asthma education to local elementary and middle schools students and their parents. The goal of Asthma 101 training was to educate nursing students so that they could provide general information about asthma to elementary school children and their parents, which could be done in a variety of settings such as health fairs and in classrooms. Test results for those who received the 2009 training showed an improvement in their knowledge about asthma. More than 95% of participants were very or somewhat satisfied with the Asthma 101 training. Test results in 2010 showed a significant improvement in participants' knowledge in 2 areas: taking asthma medications to prevent an asthma episode (P =.001) and occurrence of asthma symptoms (P =.016). Two questions of statistical significance related to the use of medications and asthma episode demonstrated that nursing students had increased their knowledge in these areas. These findings suggest that health professionals can acquire additional knowledge from a brief yet focused training, such asthe Asthma 101 training outlined in this article © 2010 The Author(s).

So far, cell culture engineering has used the high-throughput transcriptional and more recently protein profiling techniques attempting to further understand and resolve significant issues regarding the cell culture performance and its optimization. At the metabolic level, flux analysis has been used to monitor changes in the metabolic state that could affect the successful outcome of cell cultures. Metabolomics, referring to the simultaneous quantification of the (relative) concentration of the free small metabolites, is the most recently introduced high-throughput method for the measurement of the metabolic fingerprint of a biological system. Considering the role of metabolism in the context of the overall cellular function, it is easily understandable why quantifying a complete and accurate metabolomic profile is foreseen to have a major positive impact in cell culture engineering research. We will present application of Gas Chromatorgaphy-Mass Spectrometry metabolomics to monitor and analyze mammalian cell culture systems. Specifically, two bioreactor processes will be discussed in which baby hamster kidney cells were cultivated in high-cell density perfusion reactors at both laboratory and manufacturing scales and samples were analyzed over the course of the cultivation. Metabolomics enabled the differentiation between cell cultures based on bioreactor type, and stage of cell growth. Multivariate statistical analysis enabled the identification of the metabolites whose change in concentration was characteristic of the modification in any of these macroscopic parameters. The acquired results support the usefulness of metabolomics as a molecular analysis tool in cell culture engineering. © 2010 IFAC.

An important problem in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is the occurrence of failures that lead to the disconnection of parts of the network, compromising the final results achieved by the WSN operation. A way to overcome such problem is to provide a reliable connection to support the connectivity via other types of nodes that communicate with the sensor nodes. This paper proposes the usage of a network composed by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as a relay network to guarantee the delivery of data produced by WSN nodes on the ground to the users. Results from simulations of the proposed technique are provided and discussed.

Performance of an algorithm mainly depends on both computer architecture and software. An Intel Xeon processor based HPC cluster and Intel Itanium2 based symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) architectures are used for performance analysis of PDE based parallel algorithm. Algorithm is parallelized using MPI and performance measurements are done using Tuning and Analysis Utilities (TAU). Computational optimization reveals data independency and helps compiler to generate more efficient program for that specific processor. Removing data dependency inside loop is the key in this work. In iterative algorithms, like Gauss-Seidel method, each processor communicates with the same processors at every iteration. This feature makes persistent connection preferable. MPI has different types of communication methods for different communication characteristics. Persistent connection is one of them. Persistent connection removes connection overhead by leaving connection open for further communications. It can be preferred if data is transferred repeatedly between same nodes. In this work source code changed to help compiler to generate more efficient program for the specific processor. Also MPI persistent connection is used for communication at each iteration in Gauss-Seidel method. In some parallel algorithms, communication must be synchronized. Making communication between processors at the same time becomes a bottleneck if communication medium is shared. This fact has been studies and analyzed. ©2009 IEEE.

At the software development cycle, it is in the requirements analysis phase that most of the problems that can compromise the delivery time and the development and maintenance costs must be identified and resolved. In general, the requirements obtained in this phase have different relationships with each other. Some of these relationships, commonly called negative interactions, make difficult or impossible the progress of some activities of the development process. The detection of interactions between requirements is an important activity that may prevent some of these problems and avoid their propagation throughout the remainder activities. Most of the existent research in this area only focuses on the requirements phase, mainly in the identification of conflict and/or inconsistency interactions. This paper presents a semi-formal event-based approach to model and identify the interactions between requirements, investigating the interactions that influence the other phases of the software development process.
