The internet has been used to support and inform the lay person about health and healthcare services almost since its inception. One of the most popular elements of this is the exchange of information using electronic communications such as message boards or mailing lists. The purpose of this paper is to provide a guide for practitioners engaged in asynchronous moderating or facilitating online health communities. The paper outlines why facilitation of online support groups is important, and strategies to support these communities by promoting and maintaining participation, while outlining key characteristics of an effective facilitator. It also highlights some of the challenges involved in facilitating online environments, with emphasis on gender-related issues and 'groupthink'. Methods to evaluate these processes are also discussed. Electronic communication to support treatment decisions by patients is likely to continue to grow. As a result, so will the issues related to large groups working together. Ways to mediate and ensure equal and effective participation are an important option to support these endeavors. Thread level parallelism and multi-core processors are current alternatives to increase performance of general-purpose applications. In the same way, networks-on-ohip (NoCs) are the main alternatives for supporting packet throughput for the next generations of many-core processors. NPoC (network processor on chip) is a proposal to increase the performance of programmable NoC routers and multi-cluster NoC architectures using interleaved multithreading (IMT) technique. Therefore, the main goal of this paper is to present the design impact of interleaved multithreading for network processors on chip focusing on area and performance feasibility. Results show that NPoC-based router has an acceptable and similar area relative to a conventional NoC, and higher performance up to 7.1% than the same NPoC version without IMT.

This paper develops a Bayesian network (BN) predictor to profile cross-race gene expression data. Cross-race studies face more data variability than single-lab studies. Our design handles this problem by using the BN framework. In addition, unlike existing methods that unrealistically assume independent genes, our BN approach can capture the dependencies among genes. Existing BN algorithms in biomedicine applications quantize data, leading to information loss; we adopt linear Gaussian model to keep the data intact, so our resulting model is more reliable. The application of our BN predictor to a lung adenocarcinoma study shows high prediction accuracy, and performance evaluation demonstrates our gene signature agreeable with those reported in the literature. Our tool has a promising potential in finding disease biomarkers common to multiple races.

The mechanisms of action of physical assistance in promoting motor recovery after stroke are poorly understood. To explicitly model this process might help understanding what determines recovery, and how to make it faster and more effective. Linear dynamical models are used to describe the dynamics of sensorimotor adaptation, and could be extended to characterize the process of recovery of motor functions in impaired subjects while they move with the assistance of a therapist, or a robot. To test the feasibility of this approach, here we focus on a robot therapy experiment which involves a hitting task. Nine chronic stroke survivors underwent 8 to 10 rehabilitation sessions. We used a linear dynamical model to describe the trial-by-trial dynamics of the recovery process, with robot-generated assistance as input and subject's motor performance as output. In all subjects, the model correctly reproduced the overall evolution of performance over sessions. A comparison of the estimated model parameters with the clinical scales (Fugl-Meyer arm portion and Ashworth) and their modifications indicated that the time constant of the recovery process is predictive of the retention of the recovery (assessed after three months from completion of the protocol). Moreover, we found that in subjects with little or no spasticity, recovery is mediated by motor error. In contrast, in subjects with high spasticity, recovery is more influenced by performance. Although preliminary, these results suggest that modeling the recovery process with dynamical models is feasible, and could serve as basis to devise dasiaoptimalpsila strategies for regulating assistance with the aim of maximizing recovery.

We use a systemic framework to investigate the en route mid-air collision that occurred in the clear afternoon Amazon sky in which 154 people lost their lives to understand how and why this tragedy *** our research method we search for the mid-air collision antecedents traced through the concurrence of performances of the several actors(pilots and controllers) and their interaction with the contextual conditions of the several ATM *** and evidences, antecedents and consequences from this mid-air collision come from a wide range of public available *** sources include official government documents, congressional hearings, including controllers',pilots',and air traffic management authorities'testimonies, video tapes, audio tapes of many media centers, press releases, newspaper clippings, flight plans, regulations, maps, directives and so *** findings emphasize that small and normal variations in the system behavior embedded in the equipment, people and organizational daily functioning jeopardize the active problem-solving behavior needed in an air traffic control management system, highlighting how the day-to-day functioning of the system can make monitoring and awareness difficult, and shape the cognitive strategies and decisions trade offs that operators have developed to deal with overall system behavior.

This paper presents a proposal of a Gigabit UDP/IP network stack in FPGA, which is the stack of the widely used in VoIP and Video-conference applications. This network node implements the Network, Transport and Link Layer of a traditional stack. This architecture is integrated and developed using Xilinx ISE tool and synthesized to a Spartan-3E FPGA. We show architecture details, timing and area results of a practical prototyping. Also, we compare our prototype and results with other works in terms of area (Xilinx slices), speed (MHz), maximum Ethernet frame length (bytes) and maximum Ethernet speed (Mbps). Comparing to these works our architecture obtained a intermediate solution in area and is the best implementation in terms of speed (MHz).

Shift work situations occur in almost all safety critical organizations, such as nuclear power plants, petrochemical industries, and air traffic control systems, and the mechanisms that crew members use during changeovers to actualize and validate situation awareness are part of unstructured activities of the *** of some catastrophes like Chernobyl,Exxon Valdez, and,in Brazil, the recent Gol/Legacy mid-air collision indicated that inadequate communications during shift changeovers difficult operators’work in the moments that preceded these accidents, because they got inadequate information about the current ***,they also have difficult to understand what is really happening in the *** use field studies to investigate how information exchanges activities(verbal, written, and nonverbal) enable operator crews to share information regarding the events that occurred in the previous *** findings indicated that resilience of nuclear power plant operation depends on how operators actualize and validate shared situation awareness, and the activities that operators perform to achieve an adequate awareness cannot be considered as embedded or as being a natural complement of the process supervision/control activities.
