Most edge detection algorithms include three main stages: smoothing, differentiation, and labeling. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of algorithms in which competitive learning is applied first to enhance edges, followed by an edge detector to locate the edges. In this way, more detailed and relatively more unbroken edges can be found as compared to the results when an edge detector is applied alone. The algorithms compared are K-Means, SOM and SOGR for clustering, and Canny and GED for edge detection. Perceptionally, best results were obtained with the GED-SOGR algorithm. The SOGR is also considerably simpler and faster than the SOM algorithm.

Cyanobacteria are often used as an indicator of the presence and level of pollutants in the environment. They have been especially recognized for their ability to identify contamination of heavy metals. Class II metallothioneins (MTs), usually found in cyanobacteria, are low molecular weight metal-binding proteins and may be required for heavy metal tolerance. It would be important to examine the phylogenetic pattern as well as prokaryotic evolution of metal-binding protein families among cyanobacteria. All the available protein sequences of cyanobacteria metallothioneins from GenBank, PDB and Pfam have been aligned and the phylogenetic tree was constructed by utilizing four multiple sequence alignment software ClustalW, T-Coffee, POA and GCG-PileUp. Eight cyanobacteria included in this study were Synechococcus sp. PCC 7942, Synechococcus sp. WH 8102, Thermosynechococcus vulcanus, Thermosynechococcus elongates BP-1, Nostoc sp. PCC 7120, Gloeobacter violaceus PCC 7421, Oscillatoria brevis, and Magnetospirillum magnetotacticum. 22 reported heavy metal resistant sequences from these 8 species of cyanobacteria were aligned. A phyletic pattern search tool provided by Cluster of Orthologous Groups (COGs) database, a collection of COGs from 63 sequenced prokaryotes and 3 unicellular eukaryotic genomes was also used to select a desired pattern of presence-absence of species. Cn3D 4.1 program was used for structural alignment. The results indicated that the tree was composed by five clusters. Most Synechococcus and Thermosynechococcus were clustered into 2 clades while others had relatively far genetic distance with Synechococcus but closely linked to each other. Structure alignment of metallothionein among cyanobacteria indicated that a major portion of their structure are not identical but with similar properties such as polarity. The results clearly showed several conserved C-X-C motifs near N-and C-terminus of Class II metallothioneins.

We describe a network approach to building recommendation systems for a Web service. We employ two different types of weighted graphs in our analysis and development: proximity graphs, a type of fuzzy graphs based on a co-occurrence probability, and semi-metric distance graphs, which do not observe the triangle inequality of Euclidean distances. Both types of graphs are used to develop intelligent recommendation and collaboration systems for the MyLibrary@LANL Web service, a user-centered front-end to the Los Alamos National Laboratory's digital library collections and Web resources.

One of the main problems related to regulatory network reconstruction from expression data concerns the small size and low quality of the available dataset. When trying to infer a model from little information it is necessary to give much more precedence to generalization, rather than specificity, otherwise, any attempt will be fated to overfitting. In this paper we address this issue by focusing on data sparseness and noisy information, and propose a density estimation technique that achieves regularized curves when data is scarce. We first compare the proposed method with the EM algorithm for mixture models on density estimation problems. Next, we apply the method, together with Bayesian networks, on realistic simulations of static gene networks, and compare the obtained results with the standard discrete Bayesian network model. We intend to demonstrate that adopting a discrete approach is not justifiable when only a small amount of information is available.

A key factor in team collaboration is the process followed by participants. Planning this process helps teams to accomplish their goals. In collaborative design environments, process modeling should be used to make the collaboration explicit. In Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) research, we have observed that most environments do not provide support for the definition of collaborative processes by apprentices and facilitators. This support is very important when the approach is based on project-based learning (PBL). Planning the interactions and the process of a project is a way to stimulate group participants to collaborate, thereby promoting interdependency and commitment between the work and the learning activities. We present a cooperative project-based learning environment that supports facilitators and apprentices in the task of planning their work in order to improve awareness about the "learning-how-to-learn" process. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Interhospital transfers comprise a significant and increasing proportion of admissions to tertiary care centers. Patient dissatisfaction with the quality of hospital care may play an important role in these trends. The objective of this study was to describe why and how patients and surrogates request transfers to tertiary care. We interviewed 32 patients transferred to the Johns Hopkins Hospital, a US tertiary care center, or their surrogate decision-makers using a semi-structured, open-ended, iterative protocol. We used ethnographic decision modeling to develop an influence diagram of the decision. We contrasted subjects' perceptions of situations where patients did and did not request transfer to describe the threshold for requesting transfer. Subjects reported three major influences on the request to transfer to tertiary care: the quality of care at the community hospital compared to the tertiary center;the severity and potential consequences of the current illness;and their relationship with community hospitals, physicians, and tertiary care. Subjects' perceptions of the quality differential between community hospitals and tertiary centers focused on communication and medical errors rather than specialized care, hospital volume, or teaching status. Thresholds for when patients requested transfers were influenced by relationships with community hospitals and physicians and previous experience with tertiary care. This model provides a framework for understanding requests to transfer to tertiary care. Further investigation into the elements we have described might provide insights into improvements in the quality of care at community hospitals that might reduce the rates of requests for transfer. Our results also highlight the importance of including patient or surrogate perspectives in evaluations of the appropriateness of care. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The objective of this study was to translate and apply a decision-analytic model for chronic hepatitis C (CHC) to the German health care context using competence network collaboration. The German Hepatitis C Model (GEHMO) competence network used a systematic multistep approach to identify and transfer a high quality Markov model for CHC to the German health care context. GEHMO was used to project lifetime clinical and economic outcomes and to determine the cost-effectiveness of initial antiviral therapy with interferon α-2b plus ribavirin from a societal perspective. In 40-year-old patients combination therapy for 24 and 48 weeks increased life expectancy by 1.6 and 2.3 years, respectively, compared with interferon alone for 48 weeks. The discounted incremental cost-utility ratios (ICUR) for combination therapy were €5,500 per quality-adjusted life-year gained (QALY) for 24 weeks and €6,800/QALY for 48 weeks of treatment. ICUR was €9,800/QALY for moving from 24 to 48 weeks of treatment. Combination therapy remained cost-effective in sensitivity analyses. In conclusion, combination therapy with interferon α-2b and ribavirin is effective and cost-effective compared with other well-accepted medical treatments. Competence network collaboration and decision modeling provide a useful and efficient approach to combine evidence from international studies with country-specific parameters. © Springer Medizin Verlag 2005.

This poster describes a novel Bayesian method for discovering intra-cellular pathways from high throughput data. This Bayesian method is generalized from a deterministic algorithm, and it combines experimental data with prior belief to produce as output a probability distribution over the possible causal relationships between each pair of variables. We applied this algorithm to gene expression data on galactose metabolism in yeast. The Area Under ROC curve (AUROC) for the Wagner algorithm is 0.64. For the Bayesian algorithm the AUROC is 0.87, with a 95% confidence interval of (0.77 0.94). Thus, the Bayesian algorithm performs statistically significantly better than Wagner algorithm.
