This study investigated the relationship between children's mathematics performance and physical health using data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study Kindergarten Class of 2010-2011 (ECLS-K 2011). A two-level hierarchical growth curve model was used to explore the relationships between childhood mathematics performance and childhood health taking moderator effects into consideration. The study results indicate that higher body mass index relates to higher kindergarten mathematics performance, holding all else constant. The results of this study have implications for educators, parents, and health providers in understanding the relationship between mathematics performance and health indicators.

The habenula is an evolutionarily highly conserved diencephalic brain region divided into two major parts, medial and lateral. Over the past two decades, studies of the lateral habenula (LHb), in particular, have identified key functions in value-guided behavior in health and disease. In this review, we focus on recent insights into LHb connectivity and its functional relevance for different types of aversive and appetitive value-guided behavior. First, we give an overview of the anatomical organization of the LHb and its main cellular composition. Next, we elaborate on how distinct LHb neuronal subpopulations encode aversive and appetitive stimuli and on their involvement in more complex decision-making processes. Finally, we scrutinize the afferent and efferent connections of the LHb and discuss their functional implications for LHb-dependent behavior. A deepened understanding of distinct LHb circuit components will substantially contribute to our knowledge of value-guided behavior.

Aim: Exploring how nursing home nurses who care for residents with dementia experience moral distress. Design: A qualitative phenomenography design. Methods: Phenomenography was used in this qualitative study. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 nurses caring for residents with dementia at three nursing homes using phenomenographic analysis. Results: Six categories were divided into two groups. The 'reflection on my nursing' group included the categories 'anguish over qualifications to care for residents', 'uncertainty about the adequacy of the care provided', and 'internal conflict over whether to compromise with unsatisfactory outcomes'. The 'moral awareness' group included 'being aware of deviations from the standards I set and the care I provide', 'recognising when I become insensitive to things I should not do', and 'ruminating about whether it would be okay if I have no choice'. Comprehensively, it was found that moral distress occurs when reflecting on nursing and moral awareness conflicts. Conclusion: This study provides insight into the various ways in which nursing home nurses experience moral distress when caring for residents with dementia. This study can provide a basis and direction for various strategies to reduce moral distress. Implication for the Profession and/or Patient Care: Considering the growing interest in the moral distress experienced by nurses, along with the importance of the human rights of residents with dementia in an aging society, these research results will have a positive impact on improving the quality of care provided by nursing home nurses to residents with dementia. Patient or Public Contribution: No patient or public contribution. Reporting Method: We have adhered to relevant COREQ guidelines.

This thought piece explored the scholarship that expands and disrupts ideas of citizenship. In U.S. civic education classrooms, citizenship is viewed through the lens of a legal model that does not accurately reflect mixed-status classrooms in U.S.-Mexico border schools. We argue for a cathartic pedagogy that normalizes the discussion of alternatives to dominant citizenship identities in K-20 classrooms. Thus, we drew on borderlands-centered pedagogy, and critical pedagogies of counterstory and testimony to put counter-narration in conversation with cultural citizenship. We invite educators to use any combination of these educational principles to empower students in their Borderlands classrooms.

Neural network pruning is a popular approach to reducing the computational costs of training and/or deploying a network and aims to do so while minimizing accuracy loss. Pruning methods that remove individual weights (fine granularity) can remove more total network parameters before reaching a given degree of accuracy loss, while methods that preserve some or all of a network's structure (coarser granularity, such as pruning channels from a CNN) take better advantage of hardware and software optimized for dense matrix computations. We compare intelligent iterative pruning using several different criteria sampled from the literature against random pruning at initialization across multiple granularities on two different architectures and three image classification tasks. Our work is the first direct and comprehensive investigation of the relationship between granularity and the efficacy of intelligent pruning relative to a random-pruning baseline. We find that the accuracy advantage of intelligent over random pruning decreases dramatically as granularity becomes coarser, with minimal advantage for intelligent pruning at granularity coarse enough to fully preserve network structure. For instance, at pruning rates where random pruning leaves ResNet-20 at 85.0% test accuracy on CIFAR-10 after 30,000 training iterations, intelligent weight pruning with the best-in-context criterion leaves it at about 90.0% accuracy (on par with the unpruned network), kernel pruning leaves it at about 86.5%, and channel pruning leaves it at about 85.5%. Our results suggest that compared to coarse pruning, fine pruning combined with efficient implementation of the resulting networks is a more promising direction for easing the trade-off between high accuracy and low computational cost.

The behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) present complex challenges for nursing home (NH) nurses, leading to confusion and difficulties in providing effective care. To address these issues, investigating how NH nurses perceive and manage the BPSD is crucial since it can lead to the development of tailored and effective care plans. This study therefore aimed to explore the ways in which NH nurses approach the management of the BPSD by using phenomenography. The study identified five categories of assessment and four categories of intervention in managing the BPSD, with their hierarchical structure represented as an outcome space. Each category's description provides a clear conceptualization of the complex and challenging nature of the BPSD care, offering insights into how NH nurses perceive the BPSD management. The study's findings can enhance NH nurse education and lead to effective care plans for residents with BPSD.
