The effect of wearable technology on badminton learning performance: a multiple feedback WISER model in physical education

Traditional physical education mainly relies on the instructor’s verbal explanations and physical demonstrations. However, learners might be confused about whether their movements and positions are correct. Moreover, a typical badminton class has approximately 50 students, creating a huge teaching load for an instructor. To reduce the instructor’s workload and improve learners’ badminton performance, a multiple feedback WISER model was designed for badminton classes. The model provides visual feedback, information feedback, and verbal guidance to learners. In this study, a quasi-experiment was designed and participants were divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group adopted the multiple feedback WISER model while the control group applied the conventional method. The teaching experiment lasted for 8 weeks with 46 participants in the experimental group and 50 participants in the control group, respectively. To measure the learning performance, a movement detection system using wearable technology was utilized. The results indicate that the experimental group, which used the multiple feedback WISER model, outperformed the control group, which used traditional teaching methods, on badminton clear and smash skill learning (Clear: p < .001, EG = 71.03, CG = 54.76; Smash: p < .01, EG = 82.79, CG = 72.22). Further analysis reveals that the multiple feedback is more beneficial for learners with lower initial skill levels (Clear: p < .05, Lower = 63.21, Higher = 46.99; Smash: p < .001, Lower = 77.67, Higher = 39.39)

"The forgotten session": Advancing research and practice concerning the psychology of rest in athletes

This article provides a review of literature on the psychology of rest in athletes with the aim of advancing research and practice in this area. While the concept of rest represents an important component of several key topics in sport psychology, researchers and practitioners have paid relatively little attention to this concept and to psychological aspects of rest in particular. We review literature in three sport psychology topic areas within which the concept of rest in athletes has received theoretical or empirical attention, which are recovery, skill learning, and expertise development. For each area, we describe how rest has received little direct research attention within this literature, identify how this shortcoming limits current theory, research, and practice, and propose directions for future research and practice. We then describe a recent study that has attempted to address the paucity of research on this topic by prioritizing an understanding of the psychology of rest in athletes. We also explore reasons why rest has received little attention in sport psychology with the rationale that an increased awareness of these reasons will help advance research and practice in our field. We conclude by considering implications of our review for best practice. Pulmonary hypoplasia secondary to congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is characterized by impaired branching morphogenesis and differentiation. We have previously demonstrated that administration of extracellular vesicles derived from rat amniotic fluid stem cells (AFSC-EVs) rescues development of hypoplastic lungs at the pseudoglandular and alveolar stages in rodent models of CDH. Herein, we tested whether AFSC-EVs exert their regenerative effects at the canalicular and saccular stages, as these are translationally relevant for clinical intervention. To induce fetal pulmonary hypoplasia, we gavaged rat dams with nitrofen at embryonic day 9.5 and demonstrated that nitrofen-exposed lungs had impaired branching morphogenesis, dysregulated signaling pathways relevant to lung development (FGF10/FGFR2, ROBO/SLIT, Ephrin, Neuropilin 1, beta-catenin) and impaired epithelial and mesenchymal cell marker expression at both stages. AFSC-EVs administered to nitrofen-exposed lung explants rescued airspace density and increased the expression levels of key factors responsible for branching morphogenesis. Moreover, AFSC-EVs rescued the expression of alveolar type 1 and 2 cell markers at both canalicular and saccular stages and restored markers of club, ciliated epithelial, and pulmonary neuroendocrine cells at the saccular stage. AFSC-EV-treated lungs also had restored markers of lipofibroblasts and PDGFRA+ cells to control levels at both stages. EV tracking showed uptake of AFSC-EV RNA cargo throughout the fetal lung and an mRNA-miRNA network analysis identified that several miRNAs responsible for regulating lung development processes were contained in the AFSC-EV cargo. These findings suggest that AFSC-EV-based therapies hold potential for restoring fetal lung growth and maturation in babies with pulmonary hypoplasia secondary to CDH.

Identifying university students’ online academic help-seeking patterns and their role in Internet self-efficacy

The main purposes of this study were, first, to identify Taiwanese university students’ online academic help-seeking (OAHS) patterns and further to compare their Internet self-efficacy (ISE) among the identified patterns. A total of 366 Taiwanese university students were invited to fill out two questionnaires to understand their OAHS and ISE, respectively. The results revealed that three OAHS patterns, adaptive, self-reliant, and socially-affiliated, were characterized based on the cluster analysis. The differences in the students’ various ISE dimensions among the three patterns were then compared. The adaptive students, who commonly adopted all types of OAHS behaviors, tended to be the most efficacious in the seven measured ISE dimensions. The self-reliant students, highlighting that they mainly sought help by searching for relevant information online, showed higher confidence in the ISE dimensions of "Usage," "Application," and "learning" than did the socially-affiliated students (i.e., those who tended to use formal and informal queries to seek academic help online). The socially-affiliated students only showed higher confidence in sharing online information than the self-reliant students. However, in the "Communication," "Verifying," and "Metacognition" ISE dimensions, there were no significant differences between the socially-affiliated and self-reliant students. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.

Probabilistic risk assessment of emerging EU-regulated fragrance allergens in household and personal care products

Fragrance allergens in consumer products are an emerging public health concern. In this study, 56 fragrance allergens-including 30 newly designated as mandatory labeling substances under Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1545 of 26 July 2023 amending Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009-were quantified for the first time in 267 household and personal care products available in South Korea. Quantification was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Of these allergens, 21 were detected exclusively in 119 kitchen cleaning products such as fruit and vegetable washes, dishwashing detergents, and dishwasher rinse aids, while none were found in disposable wipes. The most frequently detected substances were limonene, linalool, and alpha-terpineol. A tiered risk assessment was conducted based on the quantitative results to identify substances of concern for probabilistic risk assessment. In the conservative Tier 1 assessment, which considered systemic toxicity, skin sensitization, and local respiratory toxicity, five substances-limonene, benzyl alcohol, citral, hexyl cinnamal, and beta-pinene-were flagged as potential concerns and further evaluated in a Tier 2 probabilistic risk assessment using Monte Carlo simulation. The Tier 2 assessment indicated no significant risk for systemic toxicity or skin sensitization, even at the 95th percentile exposure level. Sensitivity analysis identified key contributors to exposure variability: the concentration of the substance in the product, frequency and amount of use, and dilution rate. This study provides critical insight into exposure levels and potential health risks associated with newly regulated fragrance allergens in household and personal care products. The findings emphasize the need to update current safety management standards and demonstrate the value of probabilistic approaches in realistic risk assessments. Incidence and risk factors for pressure injury in hospitalized non-small cell lung cancer patients: A retrospective observational study

Aim: This study aimed to identify the incidence and risk factors for pressure injury in patients hospitalized for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).Methods: This retrospective observational study was conducted in 645 adults who were hospitalized for NSCLC. Clinicopathological characteristics were compared between NSCLC patients with pressure injury and those without pressure ***: Among total 645 patients, 180 patients showed pressure injury with an incidence of 27.9%. Patients with pressure injury showed increased serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels (P < 0.001), increased neutrophillymphocyte ratio (P = 0.002), and increased platelet-lymphocyte ratio (P = 0.001) more often. Increase in serum CRP levels at the time of admission was the major risk factor for development of pressure injury in NSCLC patients (OR = 2.20;95% CI [1.40-3.45];P = 0.001). Also, among major inflammatory markers, serum CRP levels at the time of admission showed weak negative correlation with the period from admission to the development of pressure injury (r = -0.216, P = 0.004).Conclusion: By checking serum CRP levels at the time of admission, the NSCLC patients at high risk for the development of pressure injury can be identified in advance and the occurrence of pressure injury can be reduced by applying more active preventive nursing *** trial registration number: KCT0006570.

Incorporating teacher intelligence into digital games: An expert system-guided self-regulated learning approach to promoting EFL students' performance in digital gaming contexts

In recent years, several studies have reported the potential of employing digital games in EFL (English as Foreign Language) courses to promote students' learning motivation. However, scholars have pointed out that students generally lack self-learning ability, which is the key to the success of learning a foreign language. Therefore, it is crucial to foster students' self-learning ability during the game-based learning process. In this study, an expert system was developed to facilitate self-regulated learning in digital game-based learning contexts. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a quasi-experimental design was employed in a university English course. The experimental group students learned with the self-regulated English vocabulary game (SR-EVG) approach, while the control group students learned with the conventional English vocabulary game (C-EVG) approach. The experimental results indicated that the use of the SR-EVG approach could improve learners' English vocabulary achievement and self-regulation compared with the C-EVG approach without increasing students' English learning anxiety. Moreover, through qualitative interviews, it was found that students who used the SR-EVG approach would focus on their learning due to goal-setting in the game and would pay more attention to the learning strategies they used. Citizenship Development and the Market's Impact: Examining Democratic learning in Charter Schools in Two Regions

The marketization of U.S. schools has increasingly complicated and even undermined the democratic aims of education, causing many to argue that democratic and market ideologies are fundamentally opposed. This meta-ethnographic study uses conceptual tools from democratic theory and the research on civic education to investigate how leaders in one market-based organization-charter schools-grapple with tensions between the market and democracy in fostering the democratic orientations of their students and parents. Findings reveal that charter leaders primarily facilitate democratic learning opportunities that advance their organizational interests and promote a narrow and more individualistic conceptualization of democracy at the expense of a communitarian, justice-oriented one. The bounded vision of democracy observed in charter school practices suggests that market pressures may drive charters to focus their democratic engagement on the instrumental aims of ensuring their organizational survival in a competitive educational marketplace, despite espoused commitments to broader democratic aims.

ORP1L mediated PI(4)P signaling at ER-lysosome-mitochondrion three-way contact contributes to mitochondrial division

Mitochondrial division is not an autonomous event but involves multiple organelles, including the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and lysosomes. Whereas the ER drives the constriction of mitochondrial membranes, the role of lysosomes in mitochondrial division is not known. Here, using super-resolution live-cell imaging, we investigate the recruitment of lysosomes to the site of mitochondrial division. We find that the ER recruits lysosomes to the site of division through the interaction of VAMP-associated proteins (VAPs) with the lysosomal lipid transfer protein ORP1L to induce a three-way contact between the ER, lysosome, and the mitochondrion. We also show that ORP1L might transport phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate (PI(4)P) from lysosomes to mitochondria, as inhibiting its transfer or depleting PI(4)P at the mitochondrial division site impairs fission, demonstrating a direct role for PI(4)P in the division process. Our findings support a model where the ER recruits lysosomes to act in concert at the fission site for the efficient division of mitochondria. Membrane contact sites between organelles have specialized functions that are only beginning to be understood. Here, the authors show that ORP1L mediates lysosome recruitment and PI(4)P signaling at endoplasmic reticulum-lysosome-mitochondria three-way contact sites involved in mitochondrial division.

Commissural dentate granule cell projections and their rapid formation in the adult brain

Dentate granule cells (GCs) have been characterized as unilaterally projecting neurons within each hippocampus. Here, we describe a unique class, the commissural GCs, which atypically project to the contralateral hippocampus in mice. Although commissural GCs are rare in the healthy brain, their number and contralateral axon density rapidly increase in a rodent model of temporal lobe epilepsies. In this model, commissural GC axon growth appears together with the well-studied hippocampal mossy fiber sprouting and may be important for the pathomechanisms of epilepsy. Our results augment the current view on hippocampal GC diversity and demonstrate powerful activation of a commissural wiring program in the adult brain.
