Multimedia technology, such as audiovisual materials and interactive modules, can improve Task-Based learning (TBL) and generate dynamic, engaging online learning experiences, according to research. This study employs TBL to examine the role of multimedia technology to improve student engagement and critical thinking in an online English language course. We utilised e-learning’s versatility and convenience to execute TBL, emphasising language skills’ practical application and analytical thinking. Using an ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) methodology, this present study analyses multimedia use in online English language sessions with 52 English learners. Our Analysis denoted low student engagement and critical thinking abilities, in which we Designed integrated multimedia materials into a comprehensive course structure. During the Development, we developed multimedia resources and interactive modules for efficient online sessions. In the Implementation, multimedia-enhanced assignments were introduced in a structured online setting to assess student engagement and critical thinking. As a result, considerable improvements were shown during the Evaluation through student involvement, interaction, question-asking, attentive listening, teamwork, and critical thinking. This finding implies that multimedia in a TBL framework improves student engagement and critical thinking, laying the foundations for future language education e-learning initiatives.

Digital transformation (Dx) is a term that appears everywhere these days, especially as changes to the social, economic, technological, and demographic landscapes are accelerating. An intentional and strategic approach to Dx can create resiliency, flexibility, and relevance for higher education institutions as they face increasingly difficult challenges. EDUCAUSE has been engaging with the higher education community around this concept for the last several years and has developed this working definition: Dx is "a series of deep and coordinated culture, workforce, and technology shifts that enable new educational and operating models and transform an institutions business model, strategic directions, and value proposition". This work is intentional, strategic, and transformational, and it does not happen all at once. Some campuses may approach Dx at the institutional level from the outset or instead begin the Dx journey with more localized transformations of individual departments or campus organizations.

Students' Use of Magnetic Models to Learn Hydrogen Bonding and the Formation of Snowflakes

Magnetic molecular models help students explore molecularstructuresand interactions. In this study, we investigated how pairs of studentsused magnetic models to explore hydrogen bonding and the 6-fold symmetryof snowflakes. Fourteen first-year students enrolled in a chemistryunit participated in pairs. Students' interactions with themagnetic models and their peers were video recorded and later ***' hand-drawn diagrams, verbal explanations, and gestureswere used to evaluate students' conceptual understanding. Studentsshowed distinctly different patterns of interaction depending on theirprior knowledge of hydrogen bonding and how they socially *** with alternative prior understanding of hydrogen bonding reliedon prompts while using magnetic models to feel the attraction andrepulsion between two water molecules. They then constructed a tetrahedralstructure and discussed its similarities with the branches of *** with a better understanding of hydrogen bonding interacted morewith each other, used magnetic models to create ring structures, andexplained their similarities with the 6-fold symmetry of *** gaining a new understanding of hydrogen bonding, most studentpairs' explanations did not extend to the massive 3D expansionof molecular structures to form a snowflake. Educators should considerthe affordances of magnetic models and students' group dynamicswhen teaching molecular interactions to explain macroscopic-levelphenomena.

Do parents' conceptions of learning science predict students' approaches to learning science and their self-efficacy for learning science?

Past studies have shown that students' conceptions of learning science (CLS) are related to their approaches to learning science (ALS) and to their self-efficacy for learning science (SELS), but it has not yet been studied whether parents' CLS play a role in children's ALS and SELS. This research investigated 472 pairs of Chinese high school students and their parents to identify the new predictive relationships among parents' CLS and students' ALS and SELS. In this study parents' CLS was divided into reproductive and constructivist conceptions. Students' ALS consisted of four factors, whereas SELS only extracted one factor. We found that (1) parents' constructivist CLS was positively associated with students' deep approaches;(2) parental reproductive CLS could positively predict students' surface strategies, while it was likely that the more constructive conceptions that parents held, the less their children would adopt surface strategies;(3) parental constructivist and reproductive CLS were both significant positive predictors of students' surface motive;and (4) parental CLS could make an indirect prediction through students' ALS. The findings indicate that parents should be cautious about the CLS they are portraying in their words and deeds to help foster their children's deep learning motive and strategies.

Exploring the relationship between Chinese pre-service teachers' epistemic beliefs and their perceptions of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK)

This study aimed to investigate the differences between pre-service teachers' (PSTs) perceived TPACK given the different clusters of their epistemic beliefs collected via a questionnaire. The responses gathered from 807 Chinese PSTs were utilised to elicit such a relationship. All of the participants responded to the Pre-service Teachers' Epistemic Belief (PTEB) survey and the Technology, Pedagogy and Content Knowledge (TPACK) survey. The results of the cluster analysis revealed that the PSTs were characterised into three clusters according to their responses to the PTEB, labelled as the Positivist, Partial Constructivist and Constructivist clusters. The ANOVA revealed that the pre-service teachers in both the Positivist and Partial Constructivist clusters had stronger perceptions of their TPACK than did the Constructivist PSTs. The results imply that more nuanced approaches are needed to develop PSTs' TPACK with reference to their epistemic profiles. In addition, it seems that the epistemic nature of creating TPACK may need to be discussed explicitly to foster PSTs' epistemic developments.

Cell death pathways play critical roles in organism development and homeostasis as well as in the pathogenesis of various diseases. While studies over the last decade have elucidated numerous different forms of cell death that can eliminate cells in various contexts, how certain mechanisms impact physiology is still not well understood. Moreover, recent studies have shown that multiple forms cell death can occur in a cell population, with different forms of death eliminating individual cells. Here, we aim to describe the known molecular mechanisms of entosis, a non-apoptotic cell engulfment process, and discuss signaling mechanisms that control its induction as well as its possible crosstalk with other cell death mechanisms. Cell death, a complex process, can happen through various mechanisms, including entosis. Entosis, first identified as a non-apoptotic cell death program, involves one cell engulfing another, causing the death of the internalized cell. However, the exact molecular mechanisms and factors controlling entosis are unclear. In this study, the authors review recent findings uncovering the molecular regulation of entosis and dicuss its potential implications in cancer. They discuss how entosis is controlled by a network of regulations involving cell adhesion, the RhoA-ROCK signaling pathway, and actomyosin contraction. Interestingly, entosis can occur alongside other cell death forms in populations, suggesting it may influence how cell groups respond to stress. The study concludes that entosis may contribute to aggressive cancers' development by favoring cells with low tension setpoints, promoting the creation of aneuploid cell lineages, and supporting cell lineages with large scavenged nutrient *** summary was initially drafted using artificial intelligence, then revised and fact-checked by the author.

Effects of interactive unplugged programming activities on computational thinking skills and student engagement in elementary education

Different instructional strategies have been drawn to assist elementary school students in improving computational thinking (CT) skills and student engagement (SE) in unplugged programming activities. This paper aimed to explore how the interactive strategies of unplugged programming affect CT skills and SE. The study was conducted based on a quasi-experimental research method. The sample was composed of 104 sixth-grade students from northern China. The students in the experimental group learned with interactive unplugged programming, whereas those in the control group learned with non-interactive unplugged programming. Analysis of Covariance statistics and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling were adopted for data analysis. Results showed that the performance of the experimental group in CT skills and SE was considerably better than that of the control group. Moreover, the predictive relationships were more complex between CT skills and SE in the experimental group. In general, these findings confirmed the teaching value of interactive unplugged programming, and further emphasized the important role of students’ CT skills in programming engagement. Therefore, through the application of interaction in instruction design, each student can be assigned a positive role to create a programming classroom that is more conducive to students. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

Wrong-site, wrong-procedure, and retained foreign object events in out-of-hospital settings: analysis of closed medico-legal complaints in Canada (2012-2021)

BackgroundSurgical sentinel events (SSEs) are serious safety incidents associated with significant patient harm and medico-legal consequences for healthcare teams and institutions. SSEs include wrong-site surgeries, wrong procedures, and unintentional retention of foreign objects. SSEs occur in hospitals and out-of-hospital operating spaces (physician offices or ambulatory surgical centres). It is unclear how the resource constraints and workflow differences of an out-of-hospital setting contribute to *** conducted a retrospective review and descriptive content analysis of all out-of-hospital SSEs reported to the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) between 2012 and 2021. Medico-legal files, medical records, and peer expert opinions were analyzed to identify the contributing factors to out-of-hospital wrong-site, wrong-procedure, and retained-object *** total of 276 medico-legal complaints involved a wrong-site, wrong-procedure or retained-object SSE, of which 24 (24/276;9%) occurred out of hospital. Only twenty of these out-of-hospital complaints were included in the qualitative content analysis. We identified five main contributing factor categories to out-of-hospital SSEs. These categories included (1) incomplete preoperative verification, (2) inadequate intraoperative surgical counts, (3) insufficient review of patient medical records, (4) surgery performed without the necessary resources, and (5) administrative errors or office disorganization. Half of the complaints were assigned more than one contributing factor. The majority of out-of-hospital SSEs (19/20;95%) resulted in an unfavourable outcome for the operating physician and most (18/20;90%) required additional healthcare resources to resolve or mitigate the consequences of the *** the contributing factors to an out-of-hospital SSE enables targeted improvements in facility protocols to support patient safety. International development agencies often support community-based organisations (CBOs) to improve the wellbeing of children and their families. The relevance, impact, and sustainability of these funding partnerships are neither widely nor consistently understood. This article discusses the CBO leader and practitioner perspective on social change and partnering. Surveys, interviews, and convenings involving CBOs from nine sub-Saharan African countries found that - distinct from international aid's focus on program implementation and service delivery, many CBOs focus on mobilising, engaging, and empowering the community to take charge of their own development. Donor-CBO partnering arrangements should integrate this role and definition of effectiveness.

Maximizing the output power for electric vehicles charging station powered by a wind energy conversion system using tip speed ratio

This study investigates the influence of tip speed ratio (TSR) as maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique on energy conversion for wind-powered electric vehicles (EVs) charging stations. The data for 14 different models of (EVs) as well as the energy demand profile for El Sherouk city in new Cairo, Egypt, is used in the study. Those vehicles represent the models that are most likely to be used according to the nature of the Egyptian market from economic and technological concerns. This includes range, battery capacity, battery technology and charging methods. charging can be in the form of fast DC, three phases which are suitable for commercial charging stations or a single phase charging suitable for residential use. A simulation is done using MATLAB/Simulink for a wind turbine Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) system including TSR MPPT algorithm. The energy output is compared with and without implementing the MPPT algorithms to measure the difference in energy. The system simulation optimized by the TSR MPPT algorithm shows an increase in the energy yield by 41.68%. The economic analysis showed a 30% reduction in the levelized cost of energy while utilizing the TSR concerning a bare system without an MPPT algorithm.
