The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship between the length of time that work groups had been meeting and the verbal behavior patterns and perceptions of group members about their groups. The verbal behavior patterns and perceptions of 180 members of 26 work groups were examined. Perceptions of 639 people in 88 work groups also were explored. Significant relationships and differences were noted between the length of time that work groups had been meeting and the verbal behavior patterns and perceptions of group members. Specifically, members of groups that had been meeting longer made significantly less dependency and fight statements and significantly more work statements. They also perceived their groups to be functioning at higher stages of group development. The results of this study lent further support to traditional models of group development. Verbal behavior patterns of members vary significantly in groups of different durations. Member perceptions of their group's development also vary significantly in groups of different durations.

Tyrosine kinases have been implicated in cellular processes thought to underlie learning and memory. Here we show that tyrosine kinases play a direct role in long-term synaptic facilitation (LTF) and long-term memory (LTM) for sensitization in Aplysia. Tyrosine kinase activity is required for serotonin-induced LTF of sensorimotor (SN-MN) synapses, and enhancement of endogenous tyrosine kinase activity facilitates the induction of LTF. These effects are mediated, at least in part, through mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) activation and are blocked by transcriptional and translational inhibitors. Moreover, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) also enhances the induction of LTF in a MAPK-dependent fashion. Finally, activation of endogenous tyrosine kinases enhances the induction of long-term memory for sensitization, and this enhancement also requires MAPK activation. Thus, tyrosine kinases, acting through MAPK, play a pivotal role in LTF and LTM formation.

In this paper we describe the design and use of a Web-based tool that enables teachers to create integrated online workspaces for collaborative case-based and problem-based learning. We discuss how this tool has been used in a variety of ways other than those originally intended by the designers. We discuss our classroom-based studies of two of these uses, and describe how these studies are influencing the redesign of the tool.

This study was designed to assess general and special education teachers' knowledge, opinions, and experience related to the diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and its treatment with stimulant medication A random sample of 200 general educators and 200 special educators from Wisconsin were surveyed. Results revealed that teachers hod limited knowledge about ADHD and the use of psychostimulant medication. Teachers' opinions about the effect of stimulant medication on school-related behaviors were generally positive, although special education teachers were more positive than general educators, The survey confirmed previous research indicating that teachers were the school personnel who most frequently recommended an assessment for ADHD. The results are discussed in terms of their educational significance and implications for teacher preparation and continuing education.

An extensive and innovative hands-on engineering curricula which focused on the topics universal to K-12 science, technology and math classes was developed by the Integrated Teaching and learning (ITL) program. Graduate engineering fellows were the key to successful creation of K-12 engineering curricula which covered a wide range of topics such as energy, laws of motion and electricity and magnetism. This curriculum experiences real-life applications of engineering in daily life and provides important lessons for future citizens and potential engineers. It was found that a well-developed engineering-based curriculum is a modern inquiry-based instrument for integrating science, math and technology in the K-12 setting.

During the past six years, pre-semester assessments of student skills have revealed a lack of hands-on experience by women students in the First-Year Engineering Projects course at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Moreover, instructors in this course have observed a pattern of female students choosing other activities within their teams rather than engaging in the hands-on construction aspect of product development. To address these concerns, a Women's Manufacturing Workshop (WMW) series was pibted during the 2002-03 academic year through a partnership between the Women in Engineering program (WIEP) and the Integrated Teaching and learning Laboratory (ITLL). Another aim was to provide women students a context for pursuing engineering through acquisition of knowledge and skills applicable to the design-build process in a low-risk setting. This paper discusses the effects of the WMW on the students, including an increase for women in their comfort with machining and other hands-on skills, and an increased likelihood that these women will remain in engineering.

We present a fast iterative support vector training algorithm for a large variety of different formulations. It works by incrementally changing a candidate support vector set using a greedy approach, until the supporting hyperplane is found within a finite number of iterations. It is derived from a simple active set method which sweeps through the set of Lagrange multipliers and keeps optimality in the unconstrained variables, while discarding large amounts of bound-constrained variables. The hard-margin version can be viewed as a simple (yet computationally crucial) modification of the incremental SVM training algorithms of Cauwenberghs and Poggio. Experimental results for various settings are reported. In all cases our algorithm is considerably faster than competing methods such as Sequential Minimal Optimization or the Nearest Point Algorithm.
