Optimal mechanical operation in the vicinity of curved vasculature

It has been shown that geometrical, structural properties vary along the length of the aortic arch. There is a scarcity of studies focus on the variation in the vessel wall thickness of aortic arch. The central premise of this study is that considering the variation in the vessel wall thickness along the circumference of the aortic arch to be governed by the uniform stress distribution across the vessel wall, meeting the principle of optimal mechanical operation of which the distribution of stress across the vessel wall is assumed to be uniform so as to create a favorable mechanical environment for the mechanosensitive resident vascular cells. Aortic arch was created with image-derived three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction technique. A structure-motivated constitutive model was utilized in the numerical modeling and direct boundary value problem was solved. Stress distribution across the vessel wall under physiological loading condition was predicted in circumferential direction to test the role of the wall thickness. The results showed the variation of the vessel wall thickness in the circumferential direction and uniform distribution of the circumferential stress in the aortic wall which implies a favorable mechanical environment for the resident mechano-sensitive vascular smooth muscle cells. Correlation of geometrical and simulation data support the proposed principle of optimal mechanical operation for the aortic arch. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A record power conversion efficiency of 8.40 % was obtained in single‐component organic solar cells (SCOSCs) based on double‐cable conjugated polymers. This is realized based on exciton separation playing the same role as charge transport in SCOSCs. Two double‐cable conjugated polymers were designed with almost identical conjugated backbones and electron‐withdrawing side units, but extra Cl atoms had different positions on the conjugated backbones. When Cl atoms were positioned at the main chains, the polymer formed the twist backbones, enabling better miscibility with the naphthalene diimide side units. This improves the interface contact between conjugated backbones and side units, resulting in efficient conversion of excitons into free charges. These findings reveal the importance of charge generation process in SCOSCs and suggest a strategy to improve this process: controlling miscibility between conjugated backbones and aromatic side units in double‐cable conjugated polymers.

Managing laundry wastewater

Laundry services are emerging in every corner of Bali, particularly at suburban area, from cities to villages. These services help the community to ease their burden. However, the burden for the environment is increase. The wastewater from the laundries should be controlled, which should be handled natural ways. One way of reducing the dangerous chemical from the laundry wastewater can be done by Vertical-Sub-surface Flow Constructed Wetland system, using volcanic rocks as substrate of plant grow and the plant as filters. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of volcanic rock and Canna plants as a filter for the laundry wastewater. The volcanic rock as substrate for the plant grows was place in layers in a drum and the laundry wastewater was flowed. The parameter of wastewater laundry, such as TDS, BOD, COD and total phosphate were measured before and after treatment. The treatment was run for 6 weeks. The result shows that this system is effective that overall can reduce the parameter measured for 53.86%.

Cytokines mediate and control immune and inflammatory responses. Complex interactions exist between cytokines, inflammation and the adaptive responses in maintaining homeostasis, health, and well being. On-demand, local delivery of anti-inflammatory drug molecules to target tissues provides a means for effective drug dosing while reducing the adverse effects of systemic drug delivery. This work demonstrates a proof-of-concept theranostic approach for inflammation based on analyte-kissing induced signaling, whereby a drug (in this report, aspirin) can be released upon detection of a target level of a proinfammatory cytokine(i.e. Interferon-γ (IFN-γ)) in real time. The structure-switching aptamer based biosensor described here is capable of quantitatively and dynamically detecting IFN-γ both in vitro and in vivo with a sensitivity of 10 pg mL-1. Moreover, the released aspirin triggered by the inflammatory cytokine IFN-γ is able to inhibit inflammation in the inflammatory rat model, and the releasing of aspirin can be quantitatively controlled. Herein research provides a novel and promising strategy for in vivo detection of proinflammatory cytokines and the subsequent therapeutic delivery of anti-inflammatory molecules. This universal theranostic platform is expected to achieve great potentials on personalized medicine towards treatment of various of diseases and health conditions. © 2019, The Authors. Synthesis and characterization of mordenite-type zeolites via hydrothermal method using silica gel and sodium aluminate as Si and Al sources at varying temperature

Mordenite-type zeolites were prepared via hydrothermal method using silica gel and sodium aluminate as Si and Al sources respectively. The temperature was varied from 150 °C up to 190 °C to determine the minimum temperature to obtain crystalline mordenite using a 23 mL Teflon-lined stainless-steel autoclave. The samples were characterized using XRD, FTIR and SEM. With the given experimental conditions, mordenite-type zeolites with good crystallinity and excellent purity were produced at 190 °C. Amorphous materials with notable peaks that correspond to mordenite planes were produced at 170 °C. The sample produced at 150°C was completely amorphous. FTIR revealed that all the three samples contain bands associated to aluminosilicate vibrational groups. However, a significant decrease in the intensities of vibration bands associated to hydroxyl (HO−) stretching and water bending were observed as the temperature is decreased. From the SEM, the sample treated at 190°C was composed of particles with strikingly linear edges having an average grain size of ~38.0 µm. Most particles are hexagonal in shape. Particle components of the samples synthesized at 170 °C and 150 °C have irregular sizes and shapes.

Evaluation of the lateral strength performance of rigid wooden portal frame1

For column-beam gussets of wooden structures, slit-processed members inserted with a steel plate are used in general. In this study, a rigid portal frame bonded with a joint was fabricated and a semi-rigid portal frame was fabricated by making a wooden gusset, a replacement for steel plate, of which a half was integrated into the column member and the other half was joined with the beam member by drift-pins. The lateral strength performance of the wooden portal frame was compared with that of the steel plate-inserted joint portal frame. The lateral strength performance was evaluated through a perfect elasto-plasticity model analysis, sectional stiffness change rate, and short-term permissible shear strength. As a result of the experiment, the maximum strength of the rigid portal frame was lower than that of the steel plate-inserted joint portal frame. The yield strength and ultimate strength were calculated as 0.58 and 0.48, respectively, but the measurements of initial stiffness and cumulative ductility improved by 1.35 and 1.1, respectively. As a result of the perfect elasto-plasticity model analysis of the semi-rigid portal frame, the maximum strength was lower than that of the rigid portal frame, but the toughness after failure was excellent. Thus, the ultimate strength was higher by 1.05∼1.07. The steel plate-inserted portal frame showed rapid decrease in stiffness with the progress of repeated tests, but the stiffness of the portal frames with a wooden joint decreased slowly.

Evaluation of moment resistance of rigid frame with glued joint1

In this study, specimens of rigid frame joint were produced by integrating joints with adhesive and other specimens were produced by inserting a wooden gusset integrated with a column member into a slit-processed beam member and joining them with pins. Then the moment resistance performances of the specimens were examined. For the wooden gusset, a GFRP-reinforced wooden gusset was used. The calculation results of perfect elasto-plasticity for the frame specimens for which a GFRP-reinforced wooden gusset was inserted into and joined with the slit-processed beam member by pins were 20-80% lower compared to the control group which consisted of steel plate-inserted frame specimens. The rigid frame specimens for which the column and beam members have been integrated with adhesive showed almost no initial residual transformations, as well as 38% greater initial rigidity and 41% greater plasticity compared to the steel plate-inserted joint. © Korean Society of Wood science Technology. Evaluation of the moment resistance of reinforced wooden gusset to glulam joint1

In this study, specimens were produced with a column member and a wooden gusset only by inserting an wooden gusset which is a substitute for steel plate into the center of a slit-processed column member. The moment resistance performance of the specimens was compared with that of control specimens that used a steel plate. The measured maximum moments of the specimens produced with GFRP-reinforced wooden laminated gussets and pins were lower by 24% on average compared to the steel plate-inserted specimens, but they showed good toughness. The fracture shape suggests that it was fractured along the annual rings between the pin and the end of the column member. The rigid specimen that integrated a laminated wood and a wooden laminated gusset with adhesive showed 2.8 times greater initial rigidity and 40% greater maximum moment on average compared to the control specimen. The rigid specimens mainly fractured on a glulam around glue line. © Korean Society of Wood science Technology. All rights reserved.
