An analysis of reconstruction noise from undersampled 4D flow MRI

Novel Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging modalities can quantify hemodynamics but require long acquisition times, precluding its widespread use for early diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. To reduce the acquisition times, reconstruction methods from undersampled measurements are routinely used, that leverage representations designed to increase image compressibility. Reconstructed anatomical and hemodynamic images may present visual artifacts. Although some of these artifact are essentially reconstruction errors, and thus a consequence of undersampling, others may be due to measurement noise or the random choice of the sampled frequencies. Said otherwise, a reconstructed image becomes a random variable, and both its bias and its covariance can lead to visual artifacts;the latter leads to spatial correlations that may be misconstrued for visual information. Although the nature of the former has been studied in the literature, the latter has not received as much attention. In this study, we investigate the theoretical properties of the random perturbations arising from the reconstruction process, and perform a number of numerical experiments on simulated and MR aortic flow. Our results show that the correlation length remains limited to two to three pixels when a Gaussian undersampling pattern is combined with recovery algorithms based on 1-norm minimization. However, the correlation length may increase significantly for other undersampling patterns, higher undersampling factors (i.e., 8× or 16× compression), and different reconstruction methods. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

This study is focused on the utilization of the limestone from Aceh province, Indonesia, as a raw material for preparing inorganic oxide using a high thermal decomposition method. In this preliminary experiment, the limestone material was powdered, then calcined at a temperature of 900 °C for 4 hours under atmospheric pressure and modified with several concentrations of nickel element (1, 3, 5 wt%). The prepared catalyst was characterized using analytical instruments, namely X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Based on the diffractogram of XRD, it can be known that the prepared catalyst was dominated by CaO crystals, in which Al2O3 was a minor compound. Characterization of the prepared catalyst using SEM-EDS demonstrated that the catalyst has a homogeneous morphology and uniform particle size.

Convergence of deep fictitious play for stochastic differential games

Stochastic differential games have been used extensively to model agents' competitions in Finance, for instance, in P2P lending platforms from the Fintech industry, the banking system for systemic risk, and insurance markets. The recently proposed machine learning algorithm, deep fictitious play, provides a novel efficient tool for finding Markovian Nash equilibrium of large N-player asymmetric stochastic differential games [J. Han and R. Hu, Mathematical and Scientific Machine Learning Conference, pages 221-245, PMLR, 2020]. By incorporating the idea of fictitious play, the algorithm decouples the game into N sub-optimization problems, and identifies each player's optimal strategy with the deep backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) method parallelly and repeatedly. In this paper, we prove the convergence of deep fictitious play (DFP) to the true Nash equilibrium. We can also show that the strategy based on DFP forms an ϵ-Nash equilibrium. We generalize the algorithm by proposing a new approach to decouple the games, and present numerical results of large population games showing the empirical convergence of the algorithm beyond the technical assumptions in the theorems. Since their introduction, multi-species mass-transfer particle tracking (or MTPT) algorithms have been used to accurately simulate advective and dispersive transport of solutes, even within systems that feature nonlinear chemical reactions. The MTPT methods were originally derived from a probabilistic or first-principles perspective and have previously lacked a more rigorous derivation arising directly from the underlying advection-diffusion-reaction equation (ADRE). Herein, we provide a fully rigorous derivation of the MTPT method as a Lagrangian approximation of solutions to the ADRE, complete with a description of the error and order of accuracy generated by this approximation. Numerical simulations further detail the fidelity of MTPT methods and display parameter regimes wherein the numerical error is independent of the chosen time step, and thereby dependent only upon the numerical discretization of the spatial domain via the number of particles within a simulation. Finally, different normalizations of the local Green's function are shown to generate similar approximations of the underlying solution for stationary particles. © 2024, The Authors. A hurdle to effective science education in schools is often the lack of teaching materials. Teaching science education in the 21st century requires direct visualization and manipulation with effective use and implementation for meaningful learning to occur, thus, unleashing students' potential towards the lesson, boosting their engagement in learning, and applying the knowledge into skills. This study was carried out to develop a do-it-yourself gel electrophoresis apparatus. This study was conducted in Cebu Normal University, Philippines with nineteen (19) teachers from the Methods of Teaching Science and Instructional Trends and Issues Class who evaluated the apparatus in terms of usability and functionality. The respondents tested the Gel Electrophoresis apparatus by conducting the experiment and they evaluated the apparatus' functionality and usability by using an evaluation sheet which is composed of eleven (11) usability questions, four (4) functionality questions. Suggestions were also asked to improve the said apparatus. After gathering data, the suggestions made by the respondents were incorporated which resulted to the improved D.I.Y. Gel Electrophoresis Apparatus. A manual with the procedures was also designed to further guide students and teachers on how to build the apparatus. With the findings and results obtained in the study, the respondents recommended the usage of the developed do-it-yourself gel electrophoresis apparatus in their respective classes and agreed that it is a good source of learning the concept of gel electrophoresis as a 21st century biological technique. The apparatus was easy to set-up and is of low-cost. During experimentation, the apparatus yielded with a positive result - the separation of food dyes which follows the principle of gel electrophoresis. Moreover, the experiment encourages creativity and it helps with the understanding of the nature of DNA and the concept of gel electrophoresis as a 21st century biological skills. ©

Purpose: This case-control study aimed to examine the association between the inflammation potential of the diet and depression. Patients and Methods: Ninety-six patients with major depression disorder were matched with 96 age-and sex-matched healthy controls. Energy-adjusted DII (E-DII™) scores were calculated based on the participants’ responses to a detailed nutritional assessment using a quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Descriptive results were reported. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals associated with E-DII scores and depression adjusting for covariates including age, sex, body mass index, comorbidities, level of education, and employment. Results: The mean E-DII score of participants in the study was 1.32±1.08, indicating a generally pro-inflammatory diet. Patients with depression had elevated E-DII scores compared to age-and sex-matched controls with E-DII scores of 1.72± 1.09 vs 0.90±0.90, respectively (P=0.001). Results of logistic regression analysis revealed that patients with depression were nearly three times more likely to be in the extreme ends of pro-inflammatory diet (OR 2.75;95% CI 1.82–4.15). Conclusion: Adult Bahraini patients with depression have higher dietary inflammation potential compared to the general population controls. Further research is needed to confirm these results and provide effective interventions to reduce the burden of this dietary inflammation. © 2021 Chen et al.

The discharge of effluents from dye industries into water streams poses a significant environmental and public health risk. In response, eco-friendly adsorbents derived from agricultural waste, such as Fava Bean Peels (R–FBP), have been investigated as potential materials for the removal of such pollutants. In this study, R–FBP and their corresponding physical and chemically activated carbon (P-RFB-AC and C-FBP-AC) were synthesized using H₃PO₄ acid and characterized using FT-IR, and SEM analyses. An optimization process was conducted to determine the optimum conditions for achieving high Methyl Orange (M. Orange) removal efficiencies using the prepared materials, namely R–FBP, P-RFB-AC, and C-FBP-AC. The adsorption mechanism was examined by analyzing the isotherm and kinetics. The results revealed that the physical raw-activated carbon exhibited the highest removal efficiency of 96.8% compared to other materials. This outcome was achieved through the use of ANN combined with Moth Search Algorithm (MSA), which was found to be the most effective model for achieving the highest M. Orange removal efficiency from Physical raw fava bean activated carbon. Under parameters of 1000 mg/l M. Orange concentration, 2 g/l dose, 15 min contact time, and 120 rpm shaking, the best experimental and predicted removal efficiencies for physical-activated carbon fava bean rind were 96.8 RE%, 96.01 indicated RSM RE%, and 95.75 predicted ANN RE%. The highest experimental and predicted removal efficiencies for the H₃PO₄ chemical activated carbon fava bean peel were 94%RE. This study aimed to develop an economical solution for treating industrial wastewater contaminated with anionic M. Orange dye using raw fava bean peel and their generated activated carbon, in both physical and chemical forms. Ensuring food security, fostering agricultural sustainability, and driving economic development. However, existing prediction models often overlook the unique characteristics of paddy productivity distribution, which varies between areas, skewed, and bounded within a certain minimum and maximum range, following a four-parameter beta distribution. Consequently, these models yield less accurate and potentially misleading predictions. Additionally, most approaches fail to capture the complex interrelationships among variables that often occur when we incorporate satellite data alongside survey data that has been recognized as a key approach for improving prediction accuracy and optimizing farming practices. To address these shortcomings, this study introduces a four-parameter beta Generalized Linear Mixed Model (GLMM) augmented within a four-parameter beta Generalized Mixed Effect Tree (GMET). The four-parameter beta GMET, an extension of the four-parameter beta GLMM model integrated with a regression tree, offers enhanced flexibility in modeling complex relationships. Application of this methodology to an empirical study in Central Kalimantan reveals notable improvements over previous methods, as evidenced by substantially lower AIC and RRMSE values. Notably, the analysis identifies lagged values of band 4, band 8, and NDVI from Sentinel-2A satellite data as significant predictors of paddy productivity, overriding the importance of farmer survey variables. This underscores the potential of satellite data to be utilized in paddy productivity predictions, offering a more efficient and cost-effective alternative to farmer survey-based methods. By enhancing satellite technology, future efforts in paddy productivity prediction can achieve higher efficiency and accuracy, contributing to informed decision-making in agricultural management. © 2024, The Authors. Proteins sample an ensemble of conformers under physiological conditions, having access to a spectrum of modes of motions, also called intrinsic dynamics. These motions ensure the adaptation to various interactions in the cell, and largely assist in, if not determine, viable mechanisms of biological function. In recent years, machine learning frameworks have proven uniquely useful in structural biology, and recent studies further provide evidence to the utility and/or necessity of considering intrinsic dynamics for increasing their predictive ability. Efficient quantification of dynamics-based attributes by recently developed physics-based theories and models such as elastic network models provides a unique opportunity to generate data on dynamics for training ML models towards inferring mechanisms of protein function, assessing pathogenicity, or estimating binding affinities. © 2022 The Authors
