Objective: Ictal stage detection in electroencephalography (EEG) is important for epilepsy diagnosis. However, it's a laborious and time-consuming task for neurologists, especially with lengthy EEG recordings (such as video-EEG). Here we applied the current deep learning techniques to improve ictal stage detection efficiency. Methods: We enrolled epileptic patients at video-EEG examination beds of our neurology department between Jan 2016 and Apr 2020. Four stages of EEG (interictal, preictal, ictal and postictal) were labeled and confirmed by neurologists. Labeled EEG signals were transformed into second-order Poincaré difference plots. The whole dataset was divided into ‘Training’, ‘Validation’ and ‘Testing’ datasets with the proportions of 45%, 5% and 50% respectively. We applied 4 Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), namely, AlexNet, GoogLeNet, ResNet50 and DenseNet201, to learn classifying. The top three CNNs were put into an ensemble model for datasets classification. Results: 30 epileptic patients were included: Male/Female 16/14, mean age 42.8 ± 15.0 (range 22 ∼ 81) years old. Total recorded ictal duration was 47,444 s. Overall accuracies for each of the 4 CNN models (AlexNet, GoogLeNet, ResNet50 and DenseNet201) were 78.0%, 78.3%, 81.7% and 80.8%. We omitted the AlexNet, the other 3 CNNs were put into the ensemble model. The best performance was under test with 1% of the Testing dataset yielded the overall accuracies of 85.9%. The ictal stage accuracy was 97.7%. Conclusion: Our method is a promising computer-aid deep learning approach to detect seizures on video EEG. Significance: For testing phase, selected proportion of testing dataset may influence the performances of deep learning models. © 2022 The Author(s)

A new covariant formalism for kinetic plasma simulations in curved spacetimes

Low density plasmas are characterized by a large scale separation between the gyromotion of particles around local magnetic fields and the macroscopic scales of the system, often making global kinetic simulations computationally intractable. The guiding center formalism has been proposed as a powerful tool to bridge the gap between these scales. Despite its usefulness, the guiding center approach has been formulated successfully only in flat spacetimes, limiting its applicability in astrophysical settings. Here, we present a new covariant formalism that leads to kinetic equations in the guiding center limit that are valid in arbitrary spacetimes. Through a variety of experiments, we demonstrate that our equations capture all known gyro-center drifts while overcoming one severe limitation imposed on numerical algorithms by the fast timescales of the particle gyromotion. This formalism will enable explorations of a variety of global plasma kinetic phenomena in the curved spacetimes around black holes and neutron stars. © 2023, CC BY.

Displaced phase-amplitude variable in polar form. This variable is used to investigate changes in amplitude in complex fields with phases that depend only on the position in the propagation. Soliton on Finite Background (SFB) which is an exact solution of Nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation has been widely used in investigating wave propagation dynamics so that it is the basic for the proposed displaced phase-amplitude. Using displaced phase-amplitude, the results obtained can be described in Argand Diagrams. Wave equation used as a model is the Benjamin Bona Mahony (BBM) equation where the envelope of this wave evolves following the NLS equation. This wave is unidirectional long wave on the surface and has low amplitude characteristics. Step by step to obtain a SFB solution that contains displaced phase-amplitude described and displayed in an argand diagram. Modeling subgrid-scale forces by spatial artificial neural networks in large eddy simulation of turbulence

Spatial artificial neural network (ANN) models are developed for subgrid-scale (SGS) forces in the large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulence. The input features are based on the first-order derivatives of the filtered velocity field at different spatial locations. The correlation coefficients of SGS forces predicted by the spatial artifical neural network (SANN) models with reasonable spatial stencil geometry can be made larger than 0.99 in an a priori analysis, and the relative error of SGS forces can be made smaller than 15%, much smaller than that of the traditional gradient model. In a posteriori analysis, a detailed comparison is made on the results of LES using the SANN model, implicit large eddy simulation (ILES), the dynamic Smagorinsky model (DSM), and the dynamic mixed model (DMM) at grid resolution of 643. It is shown that the SANN model performs better than the ILES, DSM, and DMM models in the prediction of the spectrum and other statistical properties of the velocity field, as well as the instantaneous flow structures. These results suggest that artificial neural network with consideration of spatial characteristics is a very effective tool for developing advanced SGS models in LES of turbulence.

For numerous parameter and state estimation problems, assimilating new data as they become available can help produce accurate and fast inference of unknown quantities. While most existing algorithms for solving those kind of ill-posed inverse problems can only be used with a single instance of the observed data, in this work we propose a new framework that enables existing algorithms to invert multiple instances of data in a sequential fashion. Specifically we will work with the well-known iteratively regularized Gauss–Newton method (IRGNM), a variational methodology for solving nonlinear inverse problems. We develop a theory of convergence analysis for a proposed dynamic IRGNM algorithm in the presence of Gaussian white noise. We combine this algorithm with the classical IRGNM to deliver a practical (hybrid) algorithm that can invert data sequentially while producing fast estimates. Our work includes the proof of well-definedness of the proposed iterative scheme, as well as various error bounds that rely on standard assumptions for nonlinear inverse problems. We use several numerical experiments to verify our theoretical findings, and to highlight the benefits of incorporating sequential data. The context of the numerical experiments comprises various parameter identification problems including a Darcy flow PDE, and that of electrical impedance tomography. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

Dynamic Measure of Hyperuniformity and Nonhyperuniformity in Heterogeneous Media via the Diffusion Spreadability

Time-dependent interphase diffusion processes in multiphase heterogeneous media arise ubiquitously in physics, chemistry and biology. Examples of heterogeneous media include composites, geological media, gels, foams and cell aggregates. The recently developed concept of spreadability, S(t), provides a direct link between time-dependent diffusive transport and the microstructure of two-phase media across length scales [Torquato, S., Phys. Rev. E., 104 054102 (2021)]. To investigate the capability of S(t) to probe microstructures of real heterogeneous media, we explicitly compute S(t) for well-known two-dimensional and three-dimensional idealized model structures that span across nonhyperuniform and hyperuniform classes. Among the former class, we study fully penetrable spheres and equilibrium hard spheres, and in the latter class, we examine sphere packings derived from "perfect glasses", uniformly randomized lattices (URL), disordered stealthy hyperuniform point processes and Bravais lattices. Hyperuniform media are characterized by an anomalous suppression of volume fraction fluctuations at large length scales compared to that of any nonhyperuniform medium. We further confirm that the small-, intermediate- and long-time behaviors of S(t) sensitively capture the small-, intermediate- and large-scale characteristics of the models. In instances in which the spectral density (Equation presented)V (k) has a power-law form B|k|α in the limit |k| → 0, the long-time spreadability provides a simple means to extract the value of the coefficients α and B that is robust against noise in (Equation presented)V (k) at small wavenumbers. For typical nonhyperuniform media, the intermediate-time spreadability is slower for models with larger values of the coefficient B = (Equation presented)V (0). Diabetes mellitus is one of the most rapidly rising chronic diseases around the globe. To combat these rising numbers, active research has been done in recent years to enhance the sensitivity, selectivity, and specificity of glucose biosensors. Despite the easy availability of these enzymatic glucose sensors, these have demonstrated limitations like low stability, short shelf-life, and being easily altered by physical and chemical environmental factors. To overcome these limitations, non-enzymatic sensors, also called fourth-generation glucose sensors, have been developed. These sensors use nanomaterials and do not employ any enzymes therefore exhibit better shelf life, improved sensitivity, and allow for quick detection of glucose without needing additional steps. In recent years, bimetallic nanocomposite-based fourth-generation glucose sensors have gained widespread attention from the scientific community. Owing to the synergistic effect of two distinct metal nanomaterials, these sensors show enhanced reproducibility and excellent stability as compared to monometallic nanomaterials. In this review, we aim to represent a comprehensive overview of the recent developments in the development of bimetallic nanocomposite-based glucose sensors for rapid and accurate glucose detection. After a brief introduction, we discussed the various bimetallic nanomaterials developed in recent years, followed by a discussion on the mechanism of action of such sensors. We then briefly discussed the industrial challenges of developing such sensors and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of bimetallic nanomaterial-based sensors. We finally concluded the review by highlighting the future perspectives of this new and upcoming field. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) increasingly predict complex traits;however, suboptimal performance in non-European populations raise concerns about clinical applications and health inequities. We developed CT-SLEB, a powerful and scalable method to calculate PRSs, using ancestry-specific genome-wide association study summary statistics from multiancestry training samples, integrating clumping and thresholding, empirical Bayes and superlearning. We evaluated CT-SLEB and nine alternative methods with large-scale simulated genome-wide association studies (~19 million common variants) and datasets from 23andMe, Inc., the Global Lipids Genetics Consortium, All of Us and UK Biobank, involving 5.1 million individuals of diverse ancestry, with 1.18 million individuals from four non-European populations across 13 complex traits. Results demonstrated that CT-SLEB significantly improves PRS performance in non-European populations compared with simple alternatives, with comparable or superior performance to a recent, computationally intensive method. Moreover, our simulation studies offered insights into sample size requirements and SNP density effects on multiancestry risk prediction. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature America, Inc.

Low back pain during pregnancy causes axial or parasagittal discomfort. These problems are experienced by more than two-thirds of pregnancies. Clinically the measurement of pain was carried out using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) method. Unfortunately, the method has low accuracy and is subjective. This paper proposes a method of measuring pain by using electromyography tools so that pain level measurement has a high level of accuracy and is non-invasive to patients. The study was carried out by installing electromyography electrodes on L4 and L5 muscles. The signal is recorded on a digital storage oscilloscope to find out the electrical activity. The results of the recording were evaluated for the action potential and frequency *** study was conducted on 15 respondents with lower back muscle pain in mothers monitored for 1 minute with electromyography. The monitoring results are calculated on average frequency and action potential and then presented in the form of trends. The results of the analysis of pain level measurement were compared with the results of VAS measurements. From the results of this study indicate that the trend of the action potential and signal frequency using electromyography shows different results when respondents experience the same pain scale on VAS. The value generated in the measurement using VAS is only a pain number scale that is felt by the respondent where the value is subjective. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.
