In our previous work [1], we studied an interconnected bursting neuron model for insect locomotion, and its corresponding phase oscillator model, which at high speed can generate stable tripod gaits with three legs off the ground simultaneously in swing, and at low speed can generate stable tetrapod gaits with two legs off the ground simultaneously in swing. However, at low speed several other stable locomotion patterns, that are not typically observed as insect gaits, may coexist. In the present paper, by adding heterogeneous external input to each oscillator, we modify the bursting neuron model so that its corresponding phase oscillator model produces only one stable gait at each speed, specifically: a unique stable tetrapod gait at low speed, a unique stable tripod gait at high speed, and a unique branch of stable transition gaits connecting them. Machine learning models are changing the paradigm of molecular modeling, which is a fundamental tool for material science, chemistry, and computational biology. Of particular interest is the inter-atomic potential energy surface (PES). Here we develop Deep Potential - Smooth Edition (DeepPot-SE), an end-to-end machine learning-based PES model, which is able to efficiently represent the PES of a wide variety of systems with the accuracy of ab initio quantum mechanics models. By construction, DeepPot-SE is extensive and continuously differentiable, scales linearly with system size, and preserves all the natural symmetries of the system. Further, we show that DeepPot-SE describes finite and extended systems including organic molecules, metals, semiconductors, and insulators with high fidelity. © 2018 Curran Associates Inc..All rights reserved.

Global demand for data scientists and analysts is on a trajectory of sustained growth, underscoring the need to expand enrollment of students in data science and data analytics courses and programs. This article explores diverse pathways to data science for various groups, including high school students, those in two-year colleges, and students in small colleges and minority-serving institutions. This article identifies opportunities and challenges associated with pursuing data science for students in these sectors, including factors such as building partnerships and awareness of the field and difficulties in establishing articulation agreements between institutions. The authors, representing various organizations participating in a panel discussion at the 2023 Data Science Leadership Summit of the Academic Data Science Alliance (ADSA), share insights into efforts to develop nontraditional pathways, serving as a resource for schools, colleges, and organizations contemplating creation of data science programs. The panelists’ combined experience spans work with a broad range of organizations including ADSA, American mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges, American Statistical Association, Data Science for Everyone, the Department of Education, HBCU Data Science Consortium, Mathematical Association of America, National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, HBCU Data Science Consortium, National Science Foundation, and StatPREP.

Indonesia is the second country producing Cassava (Manihotesculenta Crantz) after Nigeria. One of the Indonesian Province, Lampung, is a Cassava central land in Indonesia, with a total production of 7,39 million tons in 2015. However, there are still many Cassava cultivation production constraints, such as Fusarium wilt disease. The disease is caused by the fungus Fusariumoxysporum, which until now still cannot be effectively addressed. So far, the farmers have eradicated the fungus by using fungicides, which have adverse impacts on the environment. Therefore, it's necessary to control the disease biologically by using a superior variety resistant to Fusariumoxysporum. Fusaric acid is a toxin produced by Fusariumoxysporum fungus which is mostly found in vitro selection in plants. Disease resistance can be obtained by induced resistance. The purpose of this study is to analyze the content of the reducing sugar of the Cassava plantlet after induced fusaric acid in vitro. The research using Completely Randomized Design, of one factor, with fusaric acid concentrations, consists of 5 levels 0 ppm, 60 ppm, 80 ppm, 100 ppm, dan 120 ppm in Murashige and Skoog medium. The data analysis used Analysis of Variance with a 5 percent significance level. The results of this study indicate that the increased concentration of fusaric acid, then also increases the reducing sugar content in the Fusariumoxysporum resistant Cassava plantlet.

A Low-rank solver for the stochastic unsteady navier-stokes problem

We study a low-rank iterative solver for the unsteady Navier–Stokes equations for incompressible flows with a stochastic viscosity. The equations are discretized using the stochastic Galerkin method, and we consider an all-at-once formulation where the algebraic systems at all the time steps are collected and solved simultaneously. The problem is linearized with Picard’s method. To efficiently solve the linear systems at each step, we use low-rank tensor representations within the Krylov subspace method, which leads to significant reductions in storage requirements and computational costs. Combined with effective mean-based preconditioners and the idea of inexact solve, we show that only a small number of linear iterations are needed at each Picard step. The proposed algorithm is tested with a model of flow in a two-dimensional symmetric step domain with different settings to demonstrate the computational efficiency. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. Physical neural networks (PNNs) are a class of neural-like networks that leverage the properties of physical systems to perform computation. While PNNs are so far a niche research area with small-scale laboratory demonstrations, they are arguably one of the most underappreciated important opportunities in modern artificial intelligence (AI). Could we train AI models 1000x larger than current ones? Could we do this and also have them perform inference locally and privately on edge devices, such as smartphones or sensors? Research over the past few years has shown that the answer to all these questions is likely "textityes, with enough research": PNNs could one day radically change what is possible and practical for AI systems. To do this will however require rethinking both how AI models work, and how they are trained – primarily by considering the problems through the constraints of the underlying hardware physics. To train PNNs at large scale, many methods including backpropagation-based and backpropagation-free approaches are now being explored. These methods have various trade-offs, and so far no method has been shown to scale to the same scale and performance as the backpropagation algorithm widely used in deep learning today. However, this is rapidly changing, and a diverse ecosystem of training techniques provides clues for how PNNs may one day be utilized to create both more efficient realizations of current-scale AI models, and to enable unprecedented-scale models. Volume I of the book is entirely devoted to the theory of mean field games without a common noise. The first half of the volume provides a self-contained introduction to mean field games, starting from concrete illustrations of games with a finite number of players, and ending with ready-for-use solvability results. Readers are provided with the tools necessary for the solution of forward-backward stochastic differential equations of the McKean-Vlasov type at the core of the probabilistic approach. The second half of this volume focuses on the main principles of analysis on the Wasserstein space. It includes Lions' approach to the Wasserstein differential calculus, and the applications of its results to the analysis of stochastic mean field control problems.

Solar tracking systems which can track the Sun movement can increase the power generation rate by maximizing the surface area of the solar panels that are exposed to the sunlight. By utilizing a solar tracker, the number of solar panels needed to generate the same amount of electrical energy will be significantly lower. In general, solar tracking systems are classified as single-axis solar tracking systems and dual-axis solar tracking systems. Several researchers had conducted both simulation and experimental work to compare and evaluate the performance of solar tracking systems against static solar panels systems, as well as between different solar tracking system mechanisms. General agreements among the researchers are that the performance of solar tracking systems is always exceeding that of static solar panels. Some researchers also conducted studies on how the weather conditions affect the performance of solar panels, and they concluded that the systems with tracking mechanisms are more resilient toward a variation of weather conditions.

TAROGE-M is a radio antenna array atop ∼ 2.7 km-high Mt. Melbourne in Antarctica for detecting ultra-high energy (UHE, E > 1017 eV) air showers in near-horizontal directions. Besides the detection of cosmic rays and Earth-skimming tau neutrinos, its primary goal is to reproduce the discovery and verify the origin of so-called ANITA anomalous events, having feature of upward-going UHE air showers but cannot be explained by tau neutrinos. The detection concept takes advantages of a high altitude for a broad view toward the horizon;strong and near-vertical geomagnetic field for enhancing the radio signal;and quiet radio environment in Antarctica. Its relatively simple design and high duty cycle make it easily to be extended and thus to achieve an exposure competitive with ANITA experiments within a few years. The first TAROGE-M station operating at 180-450 MHz frequencies deployed in 2020 detected seven UHE cosmic ray events within 25.3-day livetime. The events have a mean energy of ∼ 1 EeV and an estimated flux consistent with other experiments, and validate the station as an UHE particle detector. In 2022-2023 season, the system was upgraded for a robust long-term operation, with a more detailed calibration with a drone-borne pulser. We also discuss the planned upgrade, including the implementation of interferometric trigger, which is expected to increase the cosmic ray and tau neutrino acceptances by a factor of 10 at 0.1 EeV, corresponding to a lower energy threshold by a factor of 3. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.
