This paper aims to review the applicability of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) patient engagement framework and to recognise the patient engagement features presented in current mHealth interventions for improving engagement in diabetes self-management. Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed databases were searched for relevant studies. The selected studies were then analysed using the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) patient engagement framework. Twenty engagement features were identified from 29 studies reviewed. Half of the HIMSS patient engagement framework categories were seen in the studies. This review shows that mHealth interventions have achieved the third and fourth phases of the HIMSS patient engagement framework. In addition, this review suggests improvements in patient engagement facilitation, including integrating patient-generated data into electronic health records, collaboration access to the health records, and peer support through online community forums. Background: A dual-function phantom designed to quantify the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in different fat contents (FCs) and glass bead densities (GBDs) to simulate the human tissues has not been documented yet. We propose a dual-function phantom to quantify the FC and to measure the ADC at different FCs and different GBDs. Methods: A fat-containing diffusion phantom comprised by 30 glass-bead-containing fat-water emulsions consisting of six different FCs (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50%) multiplied by five different GBDs (0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 g/50 mL). The FC and ADC were measured by the “iterative decomposition of water and fat with echo asymmetry and least squares estimation-IQ,” IDEAL-IQ, and single-shot echo-planar diffusion-weighted imaging, SS-EP-DWI, sequences, respectively. Linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship among the fat fraction (FF) measured by IDEAL-IQ, GBD, and ADC. Results: The ADC was significantly, negatively, and linearly associated with the FF (the linear slope ranged from -0.005 to -0.017, R² = 0.925 to 0.986, all p < 0.001). The slope of the linear relationship between the ADC and the FF, however, varied among different GBDs (the higher the GBD, the lower the slope). ADCs among emulsions across different GBDs and FFs were overlapped. Emulsions with low GBDs plus high FFs shared a same lower ADC range with those with median or high GBDs plus median or lower FFs. Conclusions: A novel dual-function phantom simulating the human tissues allowed to quantify the influence of FC and GBD on ADC. Relevance statement: The study developed an innovative dual-function MRI phantom to explore the impact of FC on ADC variation that can affect clinical results. The results revealed the superimposed effect on FF and GBD density on ADC measurements. An Analysis of Fluid Intake Assessment Approaches for Fluid Intake Monitoring System

Monitoring fluid intake is essential to help people manage their individual fluid intake behaviors and achieve adequate hydration. Previous studies of fluid intake assessment approaches based on inertial sensors can be categorized into wrist-worn-based and smart-container-based approaches. This study aims to analyze wrist-worn-based and smart-container-based fluid intake assessment approaches using inertial sensors. The comparison of these two approaches should be analyzed according to gesture recognition and volume estimation. In addition, the influence of the fill level and sip size information on the performance is explored in this study. The accuracy of gesture recognition with postprocessing is 92.89% and 91.8% for the wrist-worn-based approach and smart-container-based approach, respectively. For volume estimation, sip-size-dependent models can achieve better performance than general SVR models for both wrist-worn-based and smart-container-based approaches. The improvement of MAPE, MAD, and RMSE can reach over 50% except MAPE for small sip sizes. The results demonstrate that the sip size information and recognition performance are important for fluid intake assessment approaches. © 2023 by the authors.

Narrowing of the coronary arteries is an important indicator of the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients. Previous research using deep learning to identify narrowed vessels has primarily been based on object detection, but this approach has several problems, such as the inability to detect multivessel narrowing, calculate the actual rate of narrowing, and determine the exact location of occurrence. Therefore, we believe that the determination of narrowing should return to the original method, namely, calculating the maximum and minimum diameters around the vessel. However, to automate this task, a preprocessing step for separating each vessel is needed, especially for the complex structure of the left coronary artery. We designed a deep learning model capable of analyzing an entire coronary angiography (CAG) image for the separation and tracking of vessels. This not only serves as a preprocessing step for calculating narrowing but also allows for the analysis of different vessel flow directions, providing doctors with comprehensive assessment indicators. © 2024 Copyright ACM.

The COVID-19 outbreak has had a serious impact on Taiwan's health care system. Deep Learning is an effective technology to help doctors make the most appropriate medical decisions for every patient in this crisis. In this study, we select four state-of-the-art Deep Learning-Xception, MobileNetv2, DenseNet169, and DenseNet201. Additionally, Transfer Learning is used for pre-training them before four models individually classify normal and positive COVID-19 chest X-ray images. Lastly, the best results reached 98.58% accuracy, 98.58% precision, and 98.42% recall. © 2022 IEEE.

Falls are the public health issue for the elderly all over the world since the fall-induced injuries are associated with a large amount of healthcare cost. Falls can cause serious injuries, even leading to death if the elderly suffers a 'long-lie.' Hence, a reliable fall detection (FD) system is required to provide an emergency alarm for first aid. Due to the advances in wearable device technology and artificial intelligence, some fall detection systems have been developed using machine learning and deep learning methods to analyze the signal collected from accelerometer and gyroscopes. In order to achieve better fall detection performance, an ensemble model that combines a coarse-fine convolutional neural network and gated recurrent unit is proposed in this study. The parallel structure design used in this model restores the different grains of spatial characteristics and capture temporal dependencies for feature representation. This study applies the FallAllD public dataset to validate the reliability of the proposed model, which achieves a recall, precision, and F-score of 92.54%, 96.13%, and 94.26%, respectively. The results demonstrate the reliability of the proposed ensemble model in discriminating falls from daily living activities and its superior performance compared to the state-of-the-art convolutional neural network long short-term memory (CNN-LSTM) for FD. © 2023 IEEE.

Frozen shoulder is a disease that causes shoulder pain and stiffness. It limits the range of movement of the shoulder and has a great impact on the quality of daily life. One of the common treatment methods is to do frozen shoulder rehabilitation exercises. However, patients often fail to follow the instructions of the physical therapists during the program of home-based rehabilitation. Furthermore, clinical professionals are unavailable to track and monitor the home-based rehabilitation exercise performance of patients. To support clinical monitoring, we develop a wearable-based frozen shoulder rehabilitation exercise recognizer using different machine learning models and deep learning models. The proposed methods can automatically identify movement/silence segments from continuous signals and classify types of frozen shoulder rehabilitation exercises. Besides, we propose a finite state machine and fragmentation revision mechanism for error correction. Twenty subjects are invited to perform six types of rehabilitation exercises. The proposed methods achieve the best result of 95.6% accuracy, 95.83% F-score for the identification of movement/silence and 95.58% accuracy, 95.49% F-score for classification of exercise type, respectively. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method to automatically monitor the frozen shoulder rehabilitation exercise, which has the potential to provide objective, continuous and quantitative information for telerehabilitation. © 2023 IEEE.

Objectives: Over the past few years, challenges from the pandemic have led to an explosion of data sharing and algorithmic development efforts in the areas of molecular measurements, clinical data, and digital health. We aim to characterize and describe recent advanced computational approaches in translational bioinformatics across these domains in the context of issues or progress related to equity and inclusion. Methods: We conducted a literature assessment of the trends and approaches in translational bioinformatics in the past few years. Results: We present a review of recent computational approaches across molecular, clinical, and digital realms. We discuss applications of phenotyping, disease subtype characterization, predictive modeling, biomarker discovery, and treatment selection. We consider these methods and applications through the lens of equity and inclusion in biomedicine. Conclusion: Equity and inclusion should be incorporated at every step of translational bioinformatics projects, including project design, data collection, model creation, and clinical implementation. These considerations, coupled with the exciting breakthroughs in big data and machine learning, are pivotal to reach the goals of precision medicine for all. © 2022 IMIA and Georg Thieme Verlag KG.

Spectral Topological Data Analysis of Brain Signals

Topological data analysis (TDA) has become a powerful approach over the last twenty years, mainly due to its ability to capture the shape and the geometry inherent in the data. Persistence homology, which is a particular tool in TDA, has been demonstrated to be successful in analyzing functional brain connectivity. One limitation of standard approaches is that they use arbitrarily chosen threshold values for analyzing connectivity matrices. To overcome this weakness, TDA provides a filtration of the weighted brain network across a range of threshold values. However, current analyses of the topological structure of functional brain connectivity primarily rely on overly simplistic connectivity measures, such as the Pearson correlation. These measures do not provide information about the specific oscillators that drive dependence within the brain network. Here, we develop a frequency-specific approach that utilizes coherence, a measure of dependence in the spectral domain, to evaluate the functional connectivity of the brain. Our approach, the spectral TDA (STDA), has the ability to capture more nuanced and detailed information about the underlying brain networks. The proposed STDA method leads to a novel topological summary, the spectral landscape, which is a 2D-generalization of the persistence landscape. Using the novel spectral landscape, we analyze the EEG brain connectivity of patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and shed light on the frequency-specific differences in the topology of brain connectivity between the controls and ADHD patients.
