Membrane fouling is an obstacle impeding the wide applications of ceramic membranes and organics are responsible for most of the membrane fouling issues in wastewater *** this study,Fenton cleaning strategy was firstly proposed to clean ceramic membrane fouling in wastewater ***2+ efficiently catalyzed fouling cleaning with H2O2 (1.5%) to recover the filterability of ceramic *** maximum ΔTMP recovery (over 99%) was achieved at an optimal Fe2+ dosage of 124 mg/L after 6 hr of immersion *** total residual membrane fouling resistance decreased gradually from this optimum value as the Fe2+ dosage increased above 124 mg/*** residual hydraulically reversible fouling resistance accounted for most of the membrane fouling and was basically removed (≤3.0 × 109 m-1) when Fe2+ dosages higher than 124 mg/L were *** foulants responsible for the formation of a residual hydraulically reversible fouling layer (DOC (dissolved organic carbon),proteins,polysaccharides,EEM (fluorescence excitationemission matrix spectra),SS (suspended solids),and VSS (volatile suspended solids)) were gradually removed as the Fe2+ dosage *** residual organic foulants were degraded from biopolymers (10-200 kDa) to low molecular weight substances (0.1-1 kDa),and the particle size of these residual foulants decreased significantly as a *** strong oxidation power of hydrogen peroxide/hydroxy radicals towards organic foulants was enhanced by Fe2+.Fe2+ played a significant role in the removal of hydraulically reversible fouling and irreversible fouling from the ceramic ***,Fe2+(≥124 mg/L) increased the likelihood of forming secondary iron-organics aggregates.

Solar energy driven photoelectrochemical(PEC) water splitting is a clean and powerful approach for renewable hydrogen production. The design and construction of metal oxide based nanoarray photoanodes is one of the promising strategies to make the continuous breakthroughs in solar to hydrogen conversion efficiency of PEC cells owing to their owned several advantages including enhanced reactive surface at the electrode/electrolyte interface, improved light absorption capability, increased charge separation efficiency and direct electron transport pathways. In this Review, we first introduce the structure,work principle and their relevant efficiency calculations of a PEC cell. We then give a summary of the state-of the-art research in the preparation strategies and growth mechanism for the metal oxide based nanoarrays, and some details about the performances of metal oxide based nanoarray photoanodes for PEC water splitting. Finally, we discuss key aspects which should be addressed in continued work on realizing high-efficiency metal oxide based nanoarray photoanodes for PEC solar water splitting systems.

We designed a unique nanocapsule for efficient single CRISPR-Cas9 capsuling, noninvasive brain delivery and tumor cell targeting, demonstrating an effective and safe strategy for glioblastoma gene therapy. Our CRISPR-Cas9 nanocapsules can be simply fabricated by encapsulating the single Cas9/sgRNA complex within a glutathione-sensitive polymer shell incorporating a dual-action ligand that facilitates BBB penetration, tumor cell targeting, and Cas9/sgRNA selective release. Our encapsulating nanocapsules evidenced promising glioblastoma tissue targeting that led to high PLK1 gene editing efficiency in a brain tumor (up to 38.1%) with negligible (less than 0.5%) off-target gene editing in high-risk tissues. Treatment with nanocapsules extended median survival time (68 days versus 24 days in nonfunctional sgRNA-treated mice). Our new CRISPR-Cas9 delivery system thus addresses various delivery challenges to demonstrate safe and tumor-specific delivery of gene editing Cas9 ribonucleoprotein for improved glioblastoma treatment that may potentially be therapeutically useful in other brain diseases. Gas bubble evolution is an important phenomenon in many electrochemical processes and it is highly sensitive to the surface properties. Here we visualize the gas bubble dynamics on the surface of different graphene substrates during hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) using atomic force microscopy combined with scanning electrochemical microscopy. The low overpotential and low surface hydrophobicity of few-layer graphene formed on C-phase SiC causes the uniform distribution of hydrogen nanobubbles, which easily depart from the surface during the reaction. Conversely, the high overpotential and more hydrophobic surface of HOPG induces hydrogen bubbles to linger on the surface for an extended duration, leading to its accumulation and the subsequent formation of microbubbles. This in-situ nanoscale electrochemical mapping of hydrogen bubble dynamics provides new insight into electrocatalytic HER that occurs on non-metal electrodes. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Topological insulators are materials with an insulating bulk interior while maintaining gapless boundary states against back scattering. Bi2Se3 is a prototypical topological insulator with a Dirac-cone surface state around Γ. Here, we present a controlled methodology to gradually remove Se atoms from the surface Se-Bi-Se-Bi-Se quintuple layers, eventually forming bilayer-Bi on top of the quintuple bulk. Our method allows us to track the topological surface state and confirm its robustness throughout the surface modification. Importantly, we report a relocation of the topological Dirac cone in both real space and momentum space, as the top surface layer transitions from quintuple Se-Bi-Se-Bi-Se to bilayer-Bi. Additionally, charge transfer among different surface layers is identified. Our study provides a precise method to manipulate surface configurations, allowing for the fine-tuning of the topological surface states in Bi2Se3, which represents a significant advancement towards nano-engineering of topological states. Modulation classification, an intermediate step between signal detection and demodulation, is commonly deployed in many modern wireless communication systems. Although many approaches have been introduced in the last decades for identifying the modulation format of the incoming signal, they have the obstacle of mining radio characteristics for most traditional machine learning algorithms. To effectively handle this limitation, we propose an accurate modulation classification method by exploiting deep learning for being compatible with constellation diagram. A convolutional neural network (CNN), namely CRNet, is developed to proficiently learn the most relevant radio characteristics from transformed gray-scale constellation image by cross-residual connection, a novel structure for associating the intrinsic information between two processing flows specified by regular and grouped convolutional layers. Based on the experimental evaluation, CRNet achieves the classification rate of approximately 90% at +10 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) under a multipath Rayleigh fading channel and further performs more accurately than some existing deep models for constellation-based modulation classification. © 2020 IEEE.

Mangroves represent intricate and ever-changing ecosystems, exhibiting fluctuations in water level, salinity, and nutrient (such as NPK) availability as well as a wide array of unique bacterial communities. Microbial interactions in different components (e.g., tree roots) of the mangrove ecosystem are crucial to understand the ecosystem functioning for potential application in pollution mitigation and agricultural production. This study aimed to isolate phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) from the rhizosphere sediment of mangrove (Avicennia sp.) in terms of heavy metals (HMs) and salinity tolerance as well as plant growth promoting (PGP) traits, where the effective PSB were used on Brassica chinensis for their seed priming and growth under salinity stress. The effective two PSB isolates were identified by 16S rRNA, where JKD01 and JKD02 were closely related (99%) to Enterobacter cloacae (OQ271412) and Kocuria rhizophila (OQ271413), respectively. Both the strains exhibited phosphate solubilization, IAA, NH_3, and EPS production ability as well as HMs resistant ability where, E. cloacae (OQ271412) and K. rhizophila (OQ271413), are effectively remove the Cu from the water with 33.23% and 27.54%, respectively. The FTIR results showed functional group shifts (carboxyl, phosphate, and amino) in Cu-treated bacterial biomass and intracellular Cu presence, indicating the involvement of Cu in the bio-sorption and intracellular bioaccumulation process, respectively. The findings suggested PSB tolerance to salinity and HMs are present in mangroves, making them a valuable source for isolating effective bacteria to reduce stress in plants, lower HMs accumulation in mangroves, and aid in the bioremediation of HMs-contaminated environments. © 2023

In this work, we investigated the tailoring of structural and magnetic properties of NiCu nanowires through electrodeposition. Continuous (S1) and composition-modulated (S2) wires were fabricated by electrodeposition using porous alumina membranes as a template. Morphological characterization revealed that the total length of the wires was 8 ± 3 µm in both S1 and S2. For the composition-modulated wires, the length of the segments with the lowest and highest Cu concentrations was 1.2 ± 0.4 µm and 226 ± 65 nm, respectively. Mapping by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) revealed that the concentration of copper and nickel varied along the length of the composition-modulated nanowires, while the continuous nanowires contained a relatively constant concentration of both metals. It is demonstrated that the change in Cu concentration along the wire modifies the lattice parameter, average crystallite size (D) and lattice strain (ε) of Ni. This result is pivotal for understanding the magnetic properties of the wires, as nickel is primarily responsible for the magnetic behavior of the wires. From the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) results, the linewidth and resonance field values for samples S1 and S2 were determined. It was demonstrated that the greater deformation in the nickel lattice in NiCu nanowires increases the angular dependence of the resonance field. Furthermore, the smaller nickel crystallite size was shown to increase spin dispersion and magnetic damping, leading to complex behavior in FMR responses. Finally, it was demonstrated how Cu can influence the magnetic properties such as coercivity (H_C) and squareness (M_R/M_S) of the wires. Overall, this work contributes to understanding the tailoring of structural and magnetic properties of NiCu nanowires through electrodeposition. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

The cryptic invasion of golden apple snails (Pomacea canaliculata and P. maculata) in Taiwan has caused significant ecological and economical damage over the last few decades, however, their management remains difficult due to inadequate taxonomic identification, complex phylogeny, and limited population genetic information. We aim to understand the current distribution, putative population of origin, genetic diversity, and potential path of cryptic invasion of Pomacea canaliculata and P. maculata across Taiwan to aid in improved mitigation approaches. The present investigation conducted a nationwide survey with 254 samples collected from 41 locations in 14 counties or cities across Taiwan. We identified P. canaliculata and P. maculata based on mitochondrial COI and compared their genetic diversity across Taiwan, as well as other introduced and native countries (based on publicly available COI data) to understand the possible paths of invasion to Taiwan. Based on mitochondrial COI barcoding, sympatric and heterogeneous distributions of invasive P. canaliculata and P. maculata were noted. Our haplotype analysis and mismatch distribution results suggested multiple introductions of P. canaliculata in Taiwan was likely originated directly from Argentina, whereas P. maculata was probably introduced from a single, or a few, introduction event(s) from Argentina and Brazil. Our population genetic data further demonstrated a higher haplotype and genetic diversity for P. canaliculata and P. maculata in Taiwan compared to other introduced regions.
