Background: The causes for immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) are diverse and the incidence trends of IMIDs from specific causes are rarely studied. The study aims to investigate the pattern and trend of IMIDs from 1990 to 2019. Methods: We collected detailed information on six major causes of IMIDs, including asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis, between 1990 and 2019, derived from the Global Burden of Disease study in 2019. The average annual percent change (AAPC) in number of incidents and age standardized incidence rate (ASR) on IMIDs, by sex, age, region, and causes, were calculated to quantify the temporal trends. Findings: In 2019, rheumatoid arthritis, atopic dermatitis, asthma, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease accounted 1.59%, 36.17%, 54.71%, 0.09%, 6.84%, 0.60% of overall new IMIDs cases, respectively. The ASR of IMIDs showed substantial regional and global variation with the highest in High SDI region, High-income North America, and United States of America. Throughout human lifespan, the age distribution of incident cases from six IMIDs was quite different. Globally, incident cases of IMIDs increased with an AAPC of 0.68 and the ASR decreased with an AAPC of −0.34 from 1990 to 2019. The incident cases increased across six IMIDs, the ASR of rheumatoid arthritis increased (0.21, 95% CI 0.18, 0.25), while the ASR of asthma (AAPC = −0.41), inflammatory bowel disease (AAPC = −0.72), multiple sclerosis (AAPC = −0.26), psoriasis (AAPC = −0.77), and atopic dermatitis (AAPC = −0.15) decreased. The ASR of overall and six individual IMID increased with SDI at regional and global level. Countries with higher ASR in 1990 experienced a more rapid decrease in ASR. Interpretation: The incidence patterns of IMIDs varied considerably across the world. Emerging evidence suggests genetic ancestry may influence childhood cancer outcomes, but its impact on pediatric rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is unknown. We explored genetic ancestry's impact on survival among children with RMS. This multi-center observational cohort study is a secondary analysis of previously collected biobanking, genomic, and clinical data. The study included 920 individuals with newly diagnosed RMS under 40 years of age enrolled from 2005 to 2017 under the COG soft tissue sarcoma biobanking protocol D9902. The primary endpoints were: 1) event-free survival (EFS), defined as the time from study enrollment to tumor recurrence/progression, secondary malignancy, or death from any cause; and 2) overall survival (OS), defined as the time from study enrollment to death from any cause. Genetic ancestry was estimated using Grafpop software, and Cox regression assessed the association between genetic ancestry and EFS and OS, considering RMS overall, by fusion status, and histologic subtype. Covariates included sex, age at diagnosis, tumor stage, and histology, except during stratified analyses. In embryonal RMS and PAX3/7::FOXO1 fusion-negative RMS, individuals with South Asian or Asian-Pacific Islander ancestry showed worse EFS (HR: 2.06; 95% CI: 1.07-3.97; p = 0.03 and HR: 2.01; 95% CI: 1.07 - 3.76; p = 0.03, respectively) and OS (HR: 2.30; 95% CI: 1.09-4.84; p = 0.03 and HR: 2.33; 95% CI: 1.15 - 4.70; p = 0.020, respectively) compared to those with primarily European genetic ancestry. These findings suggest that genetic ancestry influences survival outcomes within RMS subtypes, and further understanding may improve precision medicine-based efforts.

Scientometrics and bibliometrics, the subfields of library and information science, deal with the quantity and quality of research outputs. Currently, various scientometric indices are being used to quantify and compare research outputs. The most widely known is the h-index. However, this index and its derivatives suffer from dependence on the mere count of a scholar's highly cited publications. To remedy this deficiency, we developed a novel index, the Universal Research Index (UR-Index) (https://***/UR-Index/) by which every single publication has its own impact on the total score. We developed this index by surveying international top 1 % cited scientists in various disciplines and included additional component variables such as publication type, leading role of a scholar, co-author count, and source metrics to this scientometric index. We acknowledge that unconscious biases built into the component variables included in the UR-Index might put research from specific groups at a disadvantage, thus continued efforts to improve equitable scholarly impact in science and academia are encouraged. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.

Background Falls are the most common injury faced by older adults and those with neurodegenerative diseases. Falls can result in concussion/mild traumatic brain injury(mTBI). Concussions in older adults or those with neurodegenerative disease can have a significant impact on behavior as post-concussion symptoms include neuropsychiatric issues. We hypothesized that there is a relationship between past fall and neuropsychiatric symptoms and neuropsychiatric symptom severity. Methods We used data on falls and Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) from the Ontario Neurodegenerative Disease Research Initiative dataset for 480 individuals with neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, frontotemporal dementia and vascular cognitive impairment). We used the Chi-squared and Mann-Whitney tests to compare frequency of NPI symptoms (anxiety, depression, irritability, disinhibition, apathy, delusions, hallucinations, agitation, euphoria, motor-disturbance, night-time behaviour, appetite), and total NPI severity and distress, respectively, between patients with and without falls in the past 12 months. Results Comparing patients with falls (n = 169; mean-age = 68.3±9; 36% F) to patients without falls (n = 311; mean-age = 68.7±7; 32% F), there was a significantly higher frequency of anxiety (Chi-squared test, X 2 (df = 1, N = 480) = 12.859, P-value = 0.0003); higher median anxiety severity (Mann-Whitney/Wilcoxon-test p-value = 0.0002); and higher median partner anxiety distress (Wilcox test p-value = 0.0006) in those who had had a previous fall compared to those who had not, even with multiple comparison correction. Depression, apathy, disinhibition, night-time behaviours, and eating/appetite changes and total NPI severity were significantly worse in those with previous falls but did not survive multiple comparison correction. Africa, the world's second-largest continent is home to 1.5 billion people, accounting for nearly 20% of the global population, (60% under age 25). By 2050, Africa's population will be 2.5 billion, and by 2035, more young Africans will be entering the workforce each year than in the rest of the world combined. Africa also hosts a rich social, cultural, and geopolitical diversity across its 5 geopolitical zones covering 54 countries. It is the most genetically, culturally, and linguistically diverse region on the planet. However, Africa's contribution to the global economy could be more significant if it urgently embraces the brain economy and leads in the development of new methodologies and approaches which can be exported around the world. In this paper, we explain our strategy to advance the Yaoundé Declaration for the Brain Economy, Brain Health, and Brain Capital. The Declaration has been endorsed by Cameroon's President, His Excellency Paul Biya, and demonstrates African leadership in global brain and society innovations, laying out a roadmap for how Africa can outcompete other economies by deftly deploying brain science-inspired policies and investments. We outline a new economic approach for African jobs, economic growth, sustainability, resilience, health, and well-being. The brain economy offers a broader framework than the current sustainable development goals (SDG) agenda. The Yaoundé Declaration is trans-disciplinary and cross-cutting across sectors: 32 sitting members of government from different sectors having co-authored this paper. It aligns with many aspects of the United Nations Pact for the Future and can accelerate the SDG. © 2025
