This study describes the bone development during the intrauterine phase of the black agouti ( Dasyprocta fuliginosa ), discussing its relationship with the species’ adaptive strategies and comparing it with other precocial and altricial species. We analyzed 33 conceptuses (four embryos and twenty-nine fetuses) obtained through collaboration with local hunters in the Amazon. Mineralization measurements of the axial and appendicular skeletons were performed by ultrasonography using a 10–18 MHz linear transducer. The chronological order of occurrence of mineralization in relation to the total dorsal length (TDL) and to the percentage of the total gestational period (GP) was: skull, ribs, vertebral bodies, clavicle, scapula, humerus, radius, ulna, ilium, ischium, femur, tibia, and fibula (TDL = 8.2 cm, 48 % GP); metacarpi, metatarsi and pubis (TDL = 9 cm, 51 % GP); thoracic and pelvic limb phalanges (TDL = 13.2 cm, 65 % GP); carpus (TDL = 15.10 cm, 72 % GP) and distal row of tarsus (TDL = 19.6 cm, 87 % GP). Mineralization of the patella was not observed in any advanced fetus (fetus with> 80 % GP). Regarding secondary ossification centers, the first signs of mineralization were observed in the distal epiphysis of the radius, distal epiphysis of the femur, and proximal and distal epiphysis of the tibia (TDL = 13.2 cm, 65 % GP). Fetuses at birth (TDL > 21.5 cm, 93.5 % GP) showed mineralization in all primary centers, and in most secondary ossification centers. Black agouti neonates have a high level of precociality with well-developed skeletal system at birth, which promotes independent postnatal locomotion and dexterity to manipulate and forage in search of food. Our results can contribute to the monitoring of bone development in other wild species, providing parameters for the identification of gestational age and serving as a model for comparisons between precocial and altricial mammals, ultimately helping understand life history strategies in different species.

Studies of the reproductive functional morphology of chelonians are important to understand the reproductive physiology, anatomy, and endocrinology of these species. However, data on the reproduction of this group have been difficult to obtain because of their cryptic habits and as a result the consequent inefficiency of conventional field methods in detecting individuals in the wild. In this study, we obtained reproductive organs from 347 adult female yellow-footed tortoises ( Chelonoidis denticulatus ), one of the most hunted and traded land vertebrates in South America, donated by local sellers in a wild meat market in the Peruvian Amazon. We described the species’ reproductive cycle and the influence of climatic factors on reproductive performance. Of the sampled females, 116 (33.4%) were gravid and 231 (66.6%) were non-gravid, including 215 vitellogenic (62.0%) and 16 non-vitellogenic (4.6%). The mean number of ovarian follicles per female declined from 28.5 (<10 mm diameter), to 7.1 follicles (20–40 mm) to 3.2 follicles> 40 mm. Gravid females had in average 3.7 shelled eggs in the oviduct, with a mean egg diameter of 53.7 mm. The estimated annual reproductive potential in gravid females was 5.1 eggs per clutch, ranging from one to 22 eggs. There was a strong positive relationship between the diameter of shelled eggs and the straight carapace length of gravid females. The final phase of the folicular growth, the most demanding energetic process in chelonian reproduction, correlated with annual rainfall peak, while oviposition was estimated to occur in the dry season. The yellow-footed tortoise should be considered an opportunistic seasonal breeder, though capable of reproducing throughout the year. Reproductive yields are linked to climatic events that influence food availability in the environment. The complexity of the challenges in the water sector means that innovative solutions are required. These solutions include not only new sustainable technologies for water treatment, but also complementary innovation in business models to support the adoption of these technologies in urban areas. This paper aims to explore the role of sustainable business models in supporting technological innovations such as decentralized approaches for water quality and quantity improvements in urban areas. The private sector involvement can be valuable in overcoming the barriers and challenges to implementation of those approaches as well as to achieve the sustainability. A case study of the product-service system as a sustainable business model in an emerging economy was conducted to deliver insights into the role of new ways of value proposition, value creation, and value capture in supporting innovative technologies in the water sector and in contributing to sustainability. The results demonstrated that consumers' acceptance, risk perception, and confidence in decentralized approaches can be improved with the support of business models through a close integration with customers. The close integration among the actors can also lead to better management of the system. Further research can focus on how different types of sustainable business models could contribute to supporting water technologies in urban areas and increase social acceptability. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

This work studies physical and mechanical properties of limestone cement pastes blended by TiO2 nanoparticles (i.e., particle size less than 100 nm). Three mixtures of 5,10 and 25 wt% of limestone partially replaced cement/clinker by TiO2 nanoparticles. Fillers are carefully selected which reinforcing cement workability or water retention they could be inert or have slightly hydraulic properties. Limestone is most common filler that fills the pores between cement particles due to the formation of monocarboaluminate, while nanoparticles increase the hydration C-S-H gel product and calcium titanium silicate which hardened the cement pastes. Nanoparticles show a great effect in reinforcing the mechanical strength of cement pastes due to the fact that TiO2-nanoparticles act as active nuclei site forming C-S-H gel observed as honeycomb-like plus improving cement to water demined (W/C) ratio. SEM analysis proves that the morphology of cement structure is well arranged and compacted leads to enhance the compressive strength by 20%. © 2018 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

Invisible microplastics (MP) have become a significant problem worldwide in recent years. Although many studies have highlighted the sources, effects, and fate of MPs pollution on various ecosystems in developed countries, there is limited information on MPs in the marine ecosystem along the northeastern coast of the Bay of Bengal (BoB). Coastal ecosystems along the BoB coasts are critical to a biodiverse ecology that supports human survival and resource extraction. However, the multi-environmental hotspots, ecotoxicity effects, transport mechanisms, fates, and intervention measures to control MP pollution initiatives along the BoB coasts have received little attention. Therefore, this review aims to highlight the multi-environmental hotspots, ecotoxicity effects, sources, fates, and intervention measures of MP in the northeastern BoB to understand how MP spreads in the nearshore marine ecosystem. This study critically evaluates the hotspots and ecotoxic effects of pollution from MP on the coastal multi-environment, e.g., soil, sediment, salt, water, and fish, as well as current intervention measures and additional mitigation recommendations. This study identified the northeastern part of the BoB as a hotspot for MP. In addition, the transport mechanisms and fate of MP in different environmental compartments are highlighted, as are research gaps and potential future research areas. Research on the ecotoxic effects of MP on BoB marine ecosystems must be a top priority, given the increasing use of plastics and the presence of significant marine products worldwide. The knowledge gained from this study would inform decision-makers and stakeholders in a way that could reduce the impact of the legacy of micro- and nanoplastics in the area. This study also proposes structural and non-structural measures to mitigate the effects of MPs and promote sustainable management.

This article aims to analyze the innovation scores of IT companies and their respective clusters, resulting in a tool for constructing knowledge about these companies and gaining useful information for comparison purposes, since few studies are focused on innovation in Brazilian IT companies, especially microenterprises. A case study methodology was used in this research, and to measure innovation, the model proposed by Edison, Ali and Tonkar (2013) was used. The target audience was the LPA of information technology companies in southwest Paraná, being composed of 50 companies divided into 3 clusters. The data collection was based on a survey with 43 questions built according to the Likert Scale. As a result of the application of the Kruskall-Wallis test, with 5% significance, it was observed that there is a difference between the innovation scores of each cluster, with Clusters 1 and 3 having higher scores. As for the relationship between innovation and turnover, the Spearman Correlation test, with 5% significance, showed that there is a moderate relationship between innovation scores and company turnover. Measuring innovation, both individually and in clusters, is important in the information technology sector because it allows management to see weaknesses and strengths, and implement improvements and changes that ensure increased competitiveness and permanence in the market. © 2017 DEStech Publications. Determination and analysis of critical damage criteria for predicting fracture in forming process by uniaxial tensile test

Blanking process is one of the core processes used to prepare a blank sheet before proceeding to the next forming steps. The quality of a cutting edge is considered to be a major parameter because it could be a cause of the premature fracture at the edge as well as limit the material formability. Finite Element Modeling (FEM) is normally used to as a tool to design the process and cutting tools. The accuracy of the FEM is highly dependent on input parameters, such as material properties, flow stress, friction coefficient, a sequence or speed cycle of the forming machine. One of the important parameters as the input parameters is a fracture limit of the material. Many researchers have been proposed and investigated with different models. Critical Damage Criteria (CDC) are among of many criteria in which are used to define this fracture limitation. However, the technique used to determine the Critical Damage Value (CDV) is still a controversial topic. In this research, the aim is to determine the suitable CDV for different CDCs by using uniaxial tensile test for predicting the fracture behavior of the tensile test. Different CDCs’, namely Normalized Cockcroft & Latham, Rice & Tracy and McClintock, would be evaluated and tested the accuracy for predicting the fracture on the tensile test specimen of material SPHC [JIS G3131] with thickness of 4 mm. The Normalized Cockcroft & Latham could give a good prediction in both load vs. stroke prediction and fracture behavior of the workpiece after the tensile test.

Public health problem is associated to eating habits, such as higher consumption of fast food and popular snakes. Excessive consumption of these foods can cause health problems such as obesity due to its high energy densities. These foods have become commonplace in world culture for their low price and the easy-to-eat foods mass production. It is known that fruits are essential in balanced diets and an important part of the nutrition strategies programs by contribute to a healthy life. Some works has shown a consumer's global trend demand for product and the life quality and between fresh food and healthy. The Brazil are the third in the word in fruit supply chain and one of the biggest problems facing is fruit loss. It is estimated that mean of fruits losses occurs in households. The present study aimed to determine Brazilian preference towards fruit and the Brazilian consumer behavior influence which might contribute to losses during consumption stage. We explored the literature and created a survey with 275 participants, 46% of men and 53% of women, to identify the perception of Brazilian consumers that may contribute to fruit loss. The results shown the consumer preferences in buying mature fruits is associated with habits and can contribute to food losses and waste, because according best practice to fruit preservation is recommended that the majority types of mellow fruits should be stored in refrigerator and some of them should be consume as soon as possible. © ILS 2018 - Information Systems, Logistics and Supply Chain, Proceedings. It is well known that face recognition (FR) systems cannot perform well under uncontrolled conditions, but there are no general and robust approaches with total immunity to all conditions. Hence, we present an adjustable FR framework with the aid of the Differential Evolution (DE) optimization algorithm. This approach implements several preprocessing and feature extraction techniques aiming to compensate the illumination variation. The main feature of the present work stands on the use of the DE which is responsible for choosing which strategies to use, as well as tunning the parameters involved. In this case study, we aim to address the illumination compensation problem applying on the well known Yale Extended B face dataset. According to the proposed FR framework, the DE can choose any combination of the following techniques and tune its necessary parameters achieving optimized values: the Gamma Intensity Correction (GIC), the Wavelet-based Illumination Normalization (WBIN), the Gaussian Blur, the Laplacian Edge Detection, the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), and the Local Binary Patterns (LBP). Our experimental analysis confirms that the proposed approach is suitable for FR using images under varying conditions. It is proved by the average recognition rate of 99.95% obtained using four different datasets.
