Causing factors of declining trend on samosir panorusan goat population as endangered species in Samosir Island

A declining trend of Samosir Panorusan goat population has been identified. As the Panorusan is an endemic and endangered species goat where the pure breed only 250,000 heads left, a research was conducted in order to find the cause factors for declining trend of population from April to June 2018 in Pangururan District, Samosir Regency. The method used was multiple linier regression analysis with variabel limitations such as goat feed, disease, breeders'experience, local culture and marketing rate of productive ewe. This research was conducted by asking directly to Panorusan goat breeders. The total of 55 goat breeders was divided into 2-3 breeders/villages. The results of this study indicated that the variable of local culture was significantly as a dominant factor that causing a declining trend of Samosir Panorusan goat population.

In this research, for the first time, caffeine and citrulline are used as fuels in synthesizing spinel ferrite CoFe2O4 by gel combustion. The influence of the oxidizer to fuel molar ratio (φ) were studied in the synthesis of cobalt ferrite. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) showed that the spinel phase was obtained in all the combustions, but the caffeine fuel allows obtaining it with high purity, while in the other combustions appears the presence of CoO as a secondary phase due to changes in the reaction. Furthermore, the crystallite size increased with the increased amount of fuel, and it was found to be in the range of 32 nm – 40 nm. In addition, the adiabatic flame temperatures were estimated, in the synthesis with φ = 0.7, the flame temperatures were 1974 K and 1711 K, respectively, which could be sufficient to obtain the phase in one stage. The ignition temperature obtained by DSC/TG thermal analysis for caffeine and citrulline samples with φ = 1.0 were 297 and 191 °C, respectively, which are in the range of traditional fuels. The morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) which revealed that the particles are agglomerated as a result of high reaction temperatures. The magnetic properties obtained by the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) for sample with caffeine and ratio φ = 0.7 were saturation magnetization Ms = 95.16 emu g-1, coercivity field Hc = 710.76 Oe and remanent magnetization Mr = 44.86 emu g-1. It should be pointed out that the high saturation magnetization value displayed exceeds the ones reported with traditional fuels. The obtained results allow us to infer that these fuels could be used as alternatives in synthesizing inorganic oxides by combustion in one step. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The extreme learning machine (ELM) is an analytical algorithm developed to train single-hidden layer feedforward neural network (SLFN). Although the ELM provides a good generalization and a very fast training phase, two shortcomings can be pointed in this approach: it assigns its input weights randomly and it is not able to handle sequential learning. Thereby, the online sequential extreme learning machine (OS-ELM) was proposed in order to tackle the lack of sequential learning on ELMs. Nonetheless, the OS-ELM still assigns the input weights randomly. Thus, in this work, we proposed an approach based on a restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) to improve the OS-ELM by determining its input weights throughout the training phase. We applied our method to several well-known benchmarks and the results show that the proposed approach is able to improve the OS-ELM for most them.

This study aims to investigate the influence of Product-Service-Systems on sustainability in small rural communities. The methodological approach is a case-based research. A case of olive processing in the Mantiqueira mountain range community, an inland region from Brazil, is in-depth analyzed. This case is a result-oriented PSS deployment that brings some insights on the creation of new business ecosystems, previously unfeasible due to the large amount of hectares dominated by small proprieties with intensive familiar farming labor. Some aspects of this PSS business model on producing olive oil more intensively introduced in the region by 2012 are the access to more financially viable technologies; financing and partnerships with government; on distance labor training possibility and compact equipment automation for olives processing. It enables new businesses previously limited to producers with large investment possibilities. In addition, it collaborates with the local economy, adding value to products offered by the farmers, promoting sustainable land management through the waste reuse and encourages tourism, job creation and skilled labor training, collaborating with progress in small agricultural towns in the inland.

The efforts to develop a visual framework that depicted the relationships between the concepts of operational excellence, organizational culture and organizational agility concluded with the development of an early conceptual model depicting each concept, their enablers, the links between them and their results. However, as research advanced and theory and discussion cumulated, doubts were generated over the capacity of the model to clearly depict the true nature of some of the relationships between concepts. At the same time, this model seemed to focus too much in each of the concepts and their components, neglecting other factors with possible influence in their relationships. In face of these limitations, a broad revision of the model was performed, with efforts to reinforce its accuracy. In this paper we present the revised version of the model, aiming to offer a broader perspective of the phenomena. In this sense, it keeps its focus on culture, excellence and agility and revises the links between them, but also considers other factors that can influence these relations and their results. © 2017 The Author(s)

With large cooling potentials, natural ventilation is the main passive technique applied to tropical buildings. In computational simulations studies, the discharge coefficient (Cd) is required as a parameter to characterize the resistance the opening imposes to the airflow. As shape and angle of shading devices influence the airflow through the openings, accurate setting of Cd has a significant impact on the characterization of the cooling phenomena. This study investigates the effect of accurate Cd of five different configurations of shading devices. Using a classroom as a generic case, corrected Cd obtained from CFD models were used to simulations on the software EnergyPlus identifying airflow levels and periods of thermal comfort under the climate conditions of São Paulo. Results indicate that using 0.6 as a Cd value in the simulations is adequate for openings with shading devices that has a lower level of obstruction on the façade. However, for geometries with several slats and low angles, Cd values can be as low as 0.34. In this case, the airflow through the room decreases in average 15% in relation to the model that used usual Cd. The outcomes contribute to a more precise prediction of natural ventilation of buildings with shaded openings. © Copyright 2017 NCEUB.
