This article describes the development of the RenPower (Renewable Power) software for sizing of renewable energy microgrids able to be used in academic teaching. RenPower was implemented using the graphic programming language LabVIEWTM, and being freely used, allows students, teachers and researchers to select a geographical location anywhere in the world, define a user’s monthly energy demand and obtain the annual photovoltaic and wind energy to meet the needs. The software also allows to calculate the amount of batteries to store the energy of the microgrid, as well as the power of the inverter for connection to the electrical network. The sizing results obtained with the software are identical to those obtained by theoretical calculations. RenPower was developed by the following universities: Universidad de Bogotá Jorge Tadeo Lozano (Colombia), Northwestern Polytechnical University (China), The University of Oklahoma (USA), Universitat Politécnica de Valencia (Spain), Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Colombia) and Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó (Colombia).

Among the wide range of applications of Cobalt Ferrite (CoFe2O4), its usage for the manufacturing of modern electronic devices such as solar panels, capacitors and batteries has been studied' lately. Hence, solar-powered vehicles, which strongly rely their performance on energy efficient electronics, is a sector that could particularly benefit from enhanced applications of such material. In this work, the synthesis of Cobalt Ferrite was studied by means of Solution Combustion Synthesis (SCS) using iron nitrate nonahydrate and cobalt nitrate hexahydrate as precursors, and glycine as fuel. The nitrates were dissolved in distilled water and placed under stirring and heating for 5 minutes; when the temperature reached 60°C, glycine was added; after complete homogenization, the solution was placed in an electric oven (400°C) until complete combustion (approximately 15 minutes). Three syntheses were carried out using different concentrations of fuel: lean, stoichiometric and rich. The product crystallite size and composition were investigated in order to determine the influence of the fuel concentration on the structure of the produced cobalt ferrite.

Visually estimating the gait score in a flock is not a precise task. The evaluation is done based on scores from 0 (sound bird) to 5 (lame bird). The extremes are simply identifiable;however, the midway scores are not evident. This study aimed to evaluate the gait scores by calculating the speed and acceleration of broilers (male and female) using video images. To this end, a special platform was developed and covered with bedding substrate. A blue panel provided a background to contrast with the birds. Selected broilers from the different gait scores were placed to walk on the runway, and a video was recorded. An algorithm was developed to analyze the video streams. The bird centroid was detected and through which the broilers speed, and acceleration from gait score was calculated. The multivariate analysis was applied to data. The velocity and acceleration differed between male and female broilers decreasing as the gait score increased. Further developments are needed for automatically detecting the broiler gait scores.

This research identified difficulties faced by dairy farmers in family farming, describing this diagnosis through ergonomic demand items (EDIs). The objective was to elaborate an organization model of work related to dairy farming (WRDF). As a methodology, a descriptive exploratory study was carried out in 14 family dairy farms that were visited and had their activities monitored. As main results, 11 EDIs were identified. The ones grouped in the infrastructure factor showed the highest resolution priority. The WRDF model was composed of three categories: management, public policies management and infrastructure, which were further subdivided into technical and social aspects. From this perspective, it is believed that the implementation of the model can bring organizational improvement, once adjustments are made in the procedures and working conditions. This study sheds light on the conditions that need to be resolved with higher priority so that the farmers will remain in the dairy business.

The potential for sustainability has been highlighted as one of the most important characteristics of product-service systems (PSS). Nevertheless, a PSS is not intrinsically sustainable. Methods and tools for PSS sustainability assessment should be developed to be integrated into the design process, especially in the early design phases, in order to conceive sustainable solutions. In addition, a PSS should be planned considering the three sustainability dimensions, from a life cycle perspective. However, PSS design and assessment considering the full life cycle is scarcely addressed in the literature, especially concerning the social dimension of sustainability. In this sense, this study proposes a streamlined life cycle assessment based approach to identify potential social impacts along the PSS life cycle that can be integrated into the early PSS design stages. The proposal is based on a hotspot analysis, which identifies where in the life cycle the most significant issues may occur. The proposal was developed in three main phases, anchored in both hotspots analysis and PSS literature. After developing it, 10 experts in PSS and sustainability assessed the proposal strengths and weakness. Some suggestions were offered by the researchers and improvements were introduced to the proposal regarding PSS life cycle phases and the social impact subcategories. The experts considered the hotspot analysis suitable to be applied in the early design stages when there is not much information yet regarding the system to conduct a complete life cycle assessment. The next step of this research is the proposal assessment by practitioners in industry. Further work will also integrate the environmental dimension of sustainability into the proposal.

To examine the portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system, the foodstuff was used for a testing of ingredients. The portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system testing show that the amount of water content in the foodstuff reduced, the drying rate accelerate. In addition, the amount of heat energy needed for the drying process also reduced. Hence process of drying foodstuff more efficienct.
