Brazil responds for an approximately one third of the world's charcoal production, with 90% is used to produce pig iron, iron alloys, among others. Surely, 70% of the charcoal is still produced by traditional handicraft method, with almost half of the firewood from the native forests. The pressure for ecologically correct and self-sustainable production has driven the search for cleaner and more efficient technologies. These can contribute to change the present charcoal production model in Brazil. This paper intends to show the research on a metallic vertical cylinder for a charcoal production unit as a model that can meet the basic requirements of being ecologically correct, socially fair, economically and then be culturally accepted to replace the traditional model. According to the sustainability pillars, this model has shown the possibility of a 25% of firewood saving, pointing out to an economical feasibility, an ecologically correct procedure and then to comply with the Brazilian labor legislation, achieving a socially fair condition for the work force. Finally it was evidenced that the process' crucial point is to burn the dirt smoke generated during the wood's carbonization process and the use of the generated heat for a previous drying of the firewood. © 2013 PICMET.

The paper presents a learning environment where recording engineering students work together with studio musician students. A learning environment, in our definition, is a setting for learning experience, and therefore dependent on conditions being as realistic as possible. The purpose of the empirical study was to gather data regarding possible learning experiences among sound engineering alumni that work as professionals in the recording industry. Alumni value the campus learning environment highly and consider sociocultural skills acquired to be of high importance for their professional careers, where co-operation with producers and musicians is essential. Assessment of the Total Organic Carbon and Conductivity in Consecutive Dyeings with Reactive Dyestuffs Using Treated Effluent by UV/H202 Photocatalysis

The paper was monitored the conductivity （g.L＂l of NaCI）, the absorbances values （Abs） and the amount of TOC （total organic carbon）, before and after five consecutive dyeings made with reuse water, obtained from treated effluent by UV/H202 photocatalysis. All rates of decolorization were above 92%, the removal of total organic carbon was above 89% in all treatments and the economy of NaCI was from 3.10 in the first recipe, 3.17 in the second, 3.49 in the third, 3.79 in the fourth and 4.05 in the fifth recipe. The five dyeings compared with same dyeings made with deionized water presented a color deviation （AE＊） below 1. The conventional dyeings would consume 80 L/kg against 40 L/kg used in the dyeing process proposed in this study, representing a great economy of water, with no discharge of effluents.

The civil construction sector shows a continuous growth in Brazil, absorbing a big quantity of workers in the field of plastering application, for internal revetment, being executed in large scale. The expert workforce of the plasterers comes from the workers themselves, for example painters and construction helpers, in search of improvement and relief from the usual work load, replacing the heavier work with a lighter one, with plaster. The objective of this study was to verify the actual work conditions in a construction site, mainly in the plastering activity, focusing on the physical work load as well as verifying the use of safety equipment by workers of civil construction in Balneário Camboriu city, Santa Catarina state. The methodology applied was the observation of the construction site, analysis of the worker's discourse with a subjective assessment, through Couto's Check List, with a qualitative and exploratory analysis, interview and verbalization in primary scale, for later study of the results. For the analysis of the work load and efforts made by the workers the OWAS (Ovako Working Posture Analyzing System) was used. As a result, awkward working postures were observed, which intensified the physical effort needed to fulfill the work load, leading to lesions in the musculoskeletal system, also the disuse of safety equipment that entails risks of accidents to the worker. Consequently, improvement suggestions were offered to the working posts.

Companies are more commonly adopting the distributed teams' model, in order to increase their knowledge and skill set. In doing so the company will obtain several benefits, but it will lose its personal touch in managing their employees. Aiming to verify if this tradeoff is beneficial for the company, Performance Measurement Systems are more and more being applied to distributed teams and to follow this growth researchers are consistently focusing on this area. Due to this focus the count of articles reporting developments in the required capabilities to form and manage distributed teams performance measurement system increases as well. Along the way some researchers are developing/applying different types of literature review on the subject in order to identify its growth and the main areas the topic is growing. Following this trend the author performed a systematic review on the theme "Which organizational capabilities/competences a company must have in order to manage/develop distributed teams performance?". This paper aims to present a model to evaluate such literature review in order to quantify and qualify the results to make it even more clearly to other researchers. Based on the results of the research, others will be able to compare the research areas and contribute with its development.

The theme of sustainable development has increasingly impacted the spheres of Brazilian society and has contributed to greater awareness to the need of natural resources conservation as well as issues on how to continue promoting socio-economic development of regions. One of the key issues for sustainable development is the generation of electricity with more use of renewable sources and, therefore, less environmental degradation. In this scenario, historically, Paraná State of Brazil has been one of the largest producers of electricity in the country, almost entirely from hydraulic source, due to the large existing river basin in the state. However, the use of this source in Brazil is declining due to depletion of water potential and also the pressure of society with respect to environmental, social and economic impacts caused by damming of rivers and flooding of cities and areas to form large reservoirs. To overcome these limitations, other sources have been studied and used, such as biomass and wind. Photovoltaic generation has been contemplated in Brazilian government policies only to supply electricity with off-grid systems in remote locations. However, due to the recent Resolution 482/2012 of ANEEL (Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency), which establishes rules for micro and mini-generation of electricity, it is possible that consumers install grid connected photovoltaic systems up to 1 MWp, as have been widely used in the urban environment installed or integrated on roofs as a form of distributed generation, particularly in Europe, where counts with installed capacity in GW range, while in Brazil it counts only with a few MW. Given this new perspective of growth of the Brazilian photovoltaic electricity generation this paper presents the potential of solar photovoltaic power generation in Paraná State, Brazil, with a comparative analysis with the potential presented by some European countries. The TODIM (an acronym in Portuguese for Interative Multi-criteria Decision Making) method has recently been extended firstly to fuzzy and next to intuitionistic fuzzy environments with promising results. In this paper, we further consider the extension of TODIM to interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy (IVIF) environments. Two case studies are used to illustrate the approach to multi-criteria decision making. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the presented method.

The steel sector was one of the pioneers to join the Movement for Quality in Brazil in late 1980, because a significant portion of its revenues came from exports. The steel industry needs massive investment to upgrade its technology, which requires a high level of training of their operators. They must form a human capital capable of producing a laminate to win the preference of its customers. Based on four models of knowledge management: the SECI model, CYNEFIN model, the FIVE DISCIPLINES model and the SEVEN DIMENSIONS model, supported by the Knowledge Management Principles established by Davenport and Prusak, combined with the Criteria for Management Excellence, was developed a Competency Development Model. To validate this model has been carried out a field research in the governance representative of the national steel industry, with the aim to ensure safety in production operations and contribute positively to the manufacture with quality, reliability and competitiveness. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2013.

Faced with a scenario where the growth of urban centers is increasing, the BRT system comes as a viable solution to this, enabling the development of functional bus corridors, serving to meet the demand of rapid shifts, especially in areas with high population density. However, to characterize as a system, it is necessary to measure their level of performance in the face of various aspects that are part of his characterization. For this, the article aims to study the main criteria influencers for the development of a performance measurement system for the BRT systems in Brazil, using for this the bibliographic research, technical manuals and expert opinion about the subject, focusing, at the end of this, to reveal these criteria, aiming at the future the elaboration of indicators to facilitate its performance evaluation.

This is a mini review of our recent work and update on polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production by marine bacteria using sugars, plant oils and three types of unsaturated fatty acids as sole carbon sources. Marine bacteria have recently attracted attention as potentially useful candidates for the production of practical materials from marine ecosystems, including the oceanic carbon dioxide cycle. A newly-identified marine bacterium, Vibrio sp. strain KN01, was characterized with respect to PHA productivity using various carbon sources under aerobic and aerobic-anaerobic marine conditions. The produced PHA was further analyzed with respect to its monomer composition. The influence of unsaturated fatty acids as sole carbon sources as well as aerobic-anaerobic conditions on PHA compositions is summarized and discussed in this chapter. © 2013 American Chemical Society.
