International collaboration towards innovation management: a network perspective and the Global Innovation Index

This article aims to fill an existing knowledge gap within the literature: the characteristics of networks of publication on innovation management research and its relationship with country’s innovativeness. The study is grounded in the theory that the creation of knowledge and collaboration within networks play a pivotal role in improving a nation’s innovation capacity. It presents and describes the characteristics of co-authorship networks of scientific publications among authors from different countries. The published articles were extracted from the Scopus and Web of Science databases, considering a period of 12 years. Following the identification of pivotal countries, the research proceeded to investigate whether their positioning within the network has an impact on their innovation capabilities. To underpin this analysis, data from the Global Innovation Index ranking were employed. Among the six countries demonstrating noteworthy centrality metrics throughout the entire period, Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom are also categorized as innovators according to the Global Innovation Index. The overlap observed suggests a relationship between countries maintaining consolidated and resilient innovation networks and positive performance in terms of innovation. However, it should be noted that innovation is influenced by a range of factors, including strategies and policies on international collaboration. © The Author(s) 2024.

The traditional form of production is called linear economy, which consists of extracting, transforming, producing, consuming and discarding, and is threatened by a series of factors. Among them, we can list the increase in the world population, which went from 3.3 billion people in 1965 to 7.79 billion in 2020, which will consequently lead to an increase in the consumer class. One of the philosophies for meeting this challenge is the Circular Economy (CE), which provides the economic system with an alternative flow model. CE is seen as a new form of sustainability and has gained popularity in the scarcity of resources, the circulation of materials and the facilitation of the reuse and recycling paradigm. Some countries, concerned about the impact of the linear economy on the environment, have proposed specific laws that address the shift from the traditional mode of production to a circular approach. Germany and Japan were pioneers in promoting CE in concrete policies. Followed by China in 2008. Given this scenario, this study aimed to raise which public policies were objects of study in the period 2017 to 2021 and which tools were used to analyze the policies. A systematic review of the literature was carried out, with articles searched in the ScienceDirect and WoS databases, using the descriptors: Circular Economy and Policies. The Sample consisted of 29 articles. The study identified an increase in initiatives to seek circularity through the formulation of public policies. Many countries are demanding more sustainable production processes, with an emphasis on energy savings and fewer carbon emissions. For this, a waste treatment policy is an initial step to seek greater degrees of circularity. The most used tool to study these policies was Framework 9R. Because with it you have an idea of what initial stage the country is in and what stage can be pursued in the future. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

An immobilized hydrogen-producing consortium investigated biohydrogen production from food waste using a combination of sodium alginate and cassava rhizome biochar. We investigated the effect of varying the biochar concentration from 0 to 3% and the size of immobilized cells from 1 to 7 mm. Immobilized cells were prepared using 50% (v/v) enriched hydrogen-producing consortium, 2% (w/v) sodium alginate, and 0 to 3% (w/v) cassava rhizome biochar. The optimal conditions for achieving the highest hydrogen production in the batch fermentation reactor were identified as a biochar concentration of 2% (w/v) and an immobilized cell size of 2 mm. The highest hydrogen yield, maximum hydrogen production rate, and lag time recorded were 0.69 mmol H2/g-COD, 0.02 mmol H2/g-COD.h, and 41.51 h, respectively. This research highlights the potential of cassava biochar technology for efficient biohydrogen production from food waste, contributing to renewable energy generation and sustainable waste management. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

This research is dedicated to formulating a practical problem related to the assignment of oncology clinic routes. The objective is to schedule medical events for patients attending health centers, taking into account the variable demand and limited resources in this field. To achieve this, three types of solutions are considered. The first is an Online Scheduling Algorithm, which simulates a scheduling process based on medical routes and also includes its inverse version. The next is a Mixed-Integer Linear programming (MILP) model. In this case, information is centralized, and patients are scheduled based on their requirements, minimizing delays in their appointments and/or medical treatments. These methodologies are compared with the current mode of assignment used. To test the previously proposed solutions, data provided by the Arturo López Perez Foundation (FALP) will be used.

Water scarcity has led to the search for sustainable methods of wastewater management in recent years. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of wastewater management through a systematic literature review, examining thirty articles published between 2012 and 2022. The main contribution lies in the in-depth analysis conducted on the management wastewater supply chain, focusing on the dimensions of sustainability studied, how they are addressed in models, the types of decisions made, and the methodologies employed. This provides insight into how sustainability has been approached in wastewater management while highlighting areas for improvement and future research.A positive trend is observed in related research, indicating a growing interest in the topic of sustainable management of wastewater supply chains up to the year 2020. To assess sustainability, optimization, and case studies were predominantly utilized, with evolutionary algorithms commonly employed in optimizations, complemented by uncertainty *** suggestions for future research, it is recommended to include political and technological aspects in the analysis of sustainability. Additionally, integrating methodologies with a greater capacity to incorporate multiple objective functions, along with a case study to illustrate their applicability, would be valuable. Addressing these outstanding issues could contribute to a better understanding of sustainable wastewater management and provide more effective solutions.

Because of the advancement of new technologies and the popularity of mobile devices, this study was designed to identify whether apps have a representative influence on companies' brand image. To fulfill this objective, descriptive research based on the structural equation model was carried out with the help of the statistical software Adanco. The study was conducted in Brasilia and applied in a virtual environment in the Google forms platform. The link was made available and disseminated to students of one university and through the WhatsApp and Facebook social networks, having 350 mobile device users as participants. The questionnaire was validated with α=0.81. The results of this research suggest that applications can influence 30.5% of a brand's image, thus raising the discussion that mobile applications will soon have equal or even greater importance than a website and social networks, tools that were once trends and are now essential requirements for organizations. Thus, for a company to be successful, it must not only be seen as a company with high performance and quality standards, but it must also represent a solid brand with a good reputation in the market and create and cultivate an image that connects emotionally with its consumer public. © 2022 The Authors. The rampant use of resources and the increasing risk of scarcity have been contributing to greater awareness regarding the need for maintaining resources in use for longer and the shift to renewable alternatives, in which perspective the concept of a circular bioeconomy (CBE) has been permeating the most diverse sectors. Therefore, the study’s aims were manifold: identify (i) existing practices and initiatives, (ii) barriers and potential opportunities and (iii) existing gaps for advancing a circular bioeconomy in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and (iv) provide recommendations aiming at the development of a circular bioeconomy (CBE) in the region. To that end, a systematic review of the existing academic literature was done, and reports from relevant non-peer reviewed sources were also consulted. CBE practices in LAC are concentrated in only a few of the countries in the region and very much revolve around recovering value from by-products and waste streams. There are a range of economic, technological, environmental, and social barriers. Opportunities for a CBE are mainly related to the use of waste as raw material (found abundantly in the countries being investigated) and the use of new techniques/technologies. The gaps between the current state and a successful CBE are related to policy, scaling-up, collaborations, and establishing efficient business models. Recommendations for a successful CBE in the region include greater engagement of public actors, investing and developing the local economy, establishing biorefineries and industrial parks, and finding new technological routes for bioresources. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Energy supply and mobility are necessary functions of economic development and have become global latent themes concerning sustainability. In the electricity sector renewable energy technologies, such as solar photovoltaic (PV), have grown significantly over its competitors in terms of investment in the past 20 years. Still, adoption of the technology has not grown quickly enough to decarbonize the sector. In the mobility sector, however, combustion engines have been replaced with electric vehicles (EV), illustrating a greater potential to mitigate emission of polluting gases. Still, the production of EV technology can yield high emissions. Instead of either technology working separately, both PV and EV may be able to cooperate in a manner where PV systems power clean electricity to produce and charge EV batteries until they return to a stationary storing system (i.e., second life) for PV systems. The following study investigates the use of EV batteries for PV systems, assessing the possible toxic effects on the environment from manufacturing, using, and disposing the technology. A review of peer-reviewed articles shed light on possible hazards of clean technologies in the energy and mobility sectors. Findings suggest the diffusion of clean technologies must be accompanied by policies that guarantee responsible disposal of them. The study concludes that advanced technological mechanisms for renewable energy may have significantly negative and sometimes obscured environmental impacts, which must be considered in future policies advocating for those technologies. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Novel Simulation Optimization Approach for Supply Chain Coordination and Management

The importance of supply chain management is paramount nowadays and this research seeks ways for better supply chain coordination. We present a roadmap for implementing true digital replicas of physical supply chains based on a disruptive simulation modeling approach. These digital replicas can enable the comparative evaluation of existing Just-In-Time (JIT) control policies for the first time without the unrealistic assumptions of existing studies in the literature. These realistic supply chain simulation models have the prospect of giving us better understanding of their behavior and of their complex dynamics. We provide guidelines for using the digital replicas and advanced optimization approaches to derive novel supply chain coordination policies pushing the field of JIT control beyond the state-of-the-art. An equally important contribution of this research is that it advances the field of hybrid discrete event-system dynamics (DES-SD) simulation with the prospect of pushing Systems engineering to the next level. This research discusses theoretical foundations for mixing DES with SD simulation, and explores technical aspects and implementation details. The implications of this extent well beyond the supply chain field since both DES and SD have dozens of application areas including manufacturing, service systems and economics, social sciences, respectively. The paper is concluded with a discussion on the potential impact of the proposed approach including insights for practitioners, applicability of scientific results in industry and prerequisites for business process re-engineering.

The present work focuses on a case study applying a maintenance management system model based on the degree of maturity in a thermoplastic industry that operates in the Industrial Pole of Manaus, in the state of Amazonas (Brazil). The system must support the decisions of the organization and promote progress in the company's continuous improvement system. The study was based on the answers to a questionnaire submitted to the maintenance, production and process engineering sectors. Internal perception was compared with external perception, in order to perform an analysis of the field of view of the three sectors on the current position of the maintenance sector in relation to the maturity model used for this analysis. From the application of the model, it was possible to develop a strategic action plan, based on lean practices, so that the maintenance areas advance towards the higher levels of the maturity scale, aiming to reach and maintain performance levels recognized as excellence.
