Soil water balance is an essential element to consider for management of agricultural land use as well as in the study of agricultural droughts. Consequently, it is important to evaluate the water consumption of a crop in each of its phenological phases and the status of water reserves during critical hydrologic periods. The aim of this study was to develop an agricultural drought index conceptualiced with a water balance model considering the vegetation stress caused by soil moisture deficit. This proposed index was call: Standardized Soil Moisture Deficit Index (SMODI), which uses meteorological information, soil moisture from SMOS satellite, hydrophysical properties of the soil and crop evapotranspiration. Information from 61 weather stations located in the dry zone of Tolima was used for estimating the water balance. SMODI was compared with the most common drought indexes: Standardized Precipitation - Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), the Palmer Self-Calibrated Drought Index (scPDSI), and other eleven macroclimatic indices. Pearsońs (r) and Spearmańs (r s) correlation coefficients, Tukey's test, and analysis of variance were appied to analyze the degree of association between SMODI and the contrasting indexeses on a quarterly basis. The proposed approach considers fundamental factors influencing soil moisture distribution and retention but also considers the water stress thresholds that plants have evolved to withstand during drought periods. When these thresholds are surpassed, they represent a water risk for plant health. Consequently, this integrated approach enhances the assessment of agricultural drought by relying on pertinent physical processes. This approach has empowered SMODI to identify extremely dry, severe, and moderate drought conditions in areas characterized by Entisols, Inceptisols, and Andisols, where rice and fruit crops and pasturelands are cultivated. Normal Move Out (NMO) Correction using Common Mid-Point (CMP) data based on shallow target seismic. It has several problems for NMO correction. This constraint is caused by changes in extreme velocity gradients, resulting in less optimum value shallow target Common Mid-Point (CMP). The increased velocity causes a stretch in the Normal moveout (NMO) process which can reduce the S/N ratio. To minimize the stretch effect on NMO processing, we use a dynamic time warping algorithm analysis seismic signal with dynamic time warping algorithm based calculation time shift at time series sequence. The results of the NMO-DTW show that there is no change phase and frequency in the trace seismic with the far offset. Because algorithm calculation is based on the initial trace on CMP. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Use of corncob and pineapple peel as associated substrates for biosurfactant production

Biosurfactants are amphiphilic biomolecules with promising tensoative and emulsifying properties that find application in the most varied industrial sectors: environment, food, agriculture, petroleum, cosmetics, and hygiene. In the current work, a 23 full-factorial design was performed to evaluate the effect and interactions of pineapple peel and corncob as substrates for biosurfactant production by Bacillus subtilis LMA-ICF-PC 001. In a previous stage, an alkaline pretreatment was applied to corncob samples to extract the xylose-rich hydrolysate. The results indicated that pineapple peel extract and xylose-rich hydrolysate acted as partial glucose substitutes, minimizing production costs with exogenous substrates. Biosurfactant I (obtained at 8.11% pineapple peel extract, 8.11% xylose-rich hydrolysate from corncob, and 2.8109 g/L glucose) exhibited a significant surface tension reduction (52.37%) and a promising bioremediation potential (87.36%). On the other hand, biosurfactant III (obtained at 8.11% pineapple peel extract, 31.89% xylose-rich hydrolysate from corncob, and 2.8109 g/L glucose) exhibited the maximum emulsification index in engine oil (69.60%), the lowest critical micellar concentration (68 mg/L), and the highest biosurfactant production (5.59 g/L). These findings demonstrated that using pineapple peel extract and xylose-rich hydrolysate from corncob effectively supports biosurfactant synthesis by B. subtilis, reinforcing how agro-industrial wastes can substitute traditional carbon sources, contributing to cost reduction and environmental sustainability. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Work accidents result in consequences to the employment of the population and increasing public spendings. Caused by workplace and work activity characteristics, occupational accidents may also derive from ergonomics and comfort issues. Heat stress is a discomfort factor that affects workers when exposed to temperatures above the body limits, resulting in exhaustion, dizziness, loss of concentration and, eventually, injuries and accidents. Under the current climate change scenario characterized by increase of temperature projections all around the world, the heat stress issue becomes even more significant. However, in Brazil, this topic is yet little explored, especially regarding the investigation of historical data on occupational accidents considering the climatic variables. The present study aims at filling a part of this gap by presenting a new database that unifies a work accident database - with over a decade of records - with meteorological data of the place and time of the accident. We investigate the relationship between these two datasets through the application of Multiple Correspondence Analysis on the database. Our results show some association between accident variables and heat stress variables. We identify some of the more critical workers' characteristics in this context and the most exposed regions of Brazil. Our database allows the continuity and expansion of this type of research in Brazil, and the MCA results point to a positive association between the occurrence of accidents with climatic variables. It may pave a new path for research that can detail and deepen the discussion on the behavior of these variables. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Growing concern about environmental pollution has led to a tightening of legislation worldwide. An example is the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) principle, which holds producers responsible for the life-cycle management of their products. In this context, the management of End-of-life tires (ELT) presents a significant challenge due to the pollution they cause by being disposed of in landfills without prior treatment. Thus, there is an opportunity to implement ELT recovery technologies that explore new sustainable alternatives. This work presents a multi-period, multi-product, multi-objective optimization model that supports decision-making for the design of a sustainable reverse logistics network. A case study is presented to show the usefulness of this model, considering the implementation of pyrolysis plants for the treatment of ELT in Chile under the regulatory framework of the EPR Law. The results show that even though the objectives are opposed, the regulatory framework of the EPR Law allows for mitigating the conflict between economic, environmental, and social decisions by establishing collection goals. The epsilon-constraint method can find economically profitable solutions, obtaining gaps of at least 8.5% and at most 19.3%. However, this will depend on the changes and sensitivity of the uncertain parameters of the model. Conclusions call for reinforcement of regulatory policies involving reverse logistics and ELT management. Future work considers the implementation of robust optimization to deal better with uncertainty.

Sustainable development is crucial for the competitive advantage of industries. However, implementing this business model faces challenges that can impact its integration and compromise the adoption of actions to address environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues that are of interest to stakeholders. To date, no in-depth study has presented the relationship between ESG issues and practical actions employed for sustainable development in companies within the Latin American context. Therefore, this article aims to evaluate the relationships between the main ESG issues and the actions applied to develop this theme in the Latin American industrial context, highlighting the main barriers, opportunities, and implications for this integration. As a methodology, a documentary analysis of 79 reports from Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Argentina was conducted using the content analysis method. This analysis highlighted central concerns such as climate change, water management, waste management, biodiversity, local communities, diversity, and inclusion. Additionally, a trend of ESG thematic dissemination was identified, which is in an early stage of maturity and lacks studies to quantify and diagnose the environmental impacts of Latin American industries. These findings directly impact the empirical evidence of how the Latin American industry is neglecting social issues, is still developing studies to quantify its environmental impacts, and strongly adheres to the concept and theme of ESG. The conclusions of this study highlight three main points: (i) From 2018 to 2022, 47% of material topics were related to at least one ESG pillar, with a predominance of the environmental dimension, (ii) there was a trend of increased adherence to ESG and improvements in the materiality of reports, and (iii) it is recommended to enhance indicators, accelerate the sustainable transition, and integrate ESG themes into supplier selection and workplace safety to strengthen sus

Gain scheduling has been successfully applied in many different areas due to the positive results achieved when applied to nonlinear control. Its utilization enables the controller to respond rapidly to changes in operating conditions. This study demonstrates the application of gain scheduling to a SMAR didactic level system to implement adaptive control. The results exhibited a strong response with minor errors using a Proportional and Integral (PI) controller, which facilitated the development of two generic equations for determining the values of K p (proportional gain) and K i (integral gain) based on the desired set point.

Set-Point Tracking MPC with Avoidance Features

This work proposes a finite-horizon optimal control strategy to solve the tracking problem while providing avoidance features to the closed-loop system. Inspired by the set-point tracking model predictive control (MPC) framework, the central idea of including artificial variables into the optimal control problem is considered. This approach allows us to add avoidance features into the set-point tracking MPC strategy without losing the properties of an enlarged domain of attraction and feasibility insurances in the face of any changing reference. Besides, the artificial variables are considered together with an avoidance cost functional to establish the basis of the strategy, maintaining the recursive feasibility property in the presence of a previously unknown number of regions to be avoided. It is shown that the closed-loop system is recursively feasible and input-to-state-stable under the mild assumption that the avoidance cost is uniformly bounded over time. Finally, two numerical examples illustrate the controller behavior. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is widely used in electrochemistry, energy sciences, biology, and beyond. Analyzing EIS data is crucial, but it often poses challenges because of the numerous possible equivalent circuit models, the need for accurate analytical models, the difficulties of nonlinear regression, and the necessity of managing large datasets within a unified framework. To overcome these challenges, non-parametric models, such as the distribution of relaxation times (DRT, also known as the distribution function of relaxation times, DFRT), have emerged as promising tools for EIS analysis. For example, the DRT can be used to generate equivalent circuit models, initialize regression parameters, provide a time-domain representation of EIS spectra, and identify electrochemical processes. However, mastering the DRT method poses challenges as it requires mathematical and programming proficiency, which may extend beyond experimentalists’ usual expertise. Post-inversion analysis of DRT data can be difficult, especially in accurately identifying electrochemical processes, leading to results that may not always meet expectations. This article examines non-parametric EIS analysis methods, outlining their strengths and limitations from theoretical, computational, and end-user perspectives, and provides guidelines for their future development. Moreover, insights from survey data emphasize the need to develop a large impedance database, akin to an impedance genome. In turn, software development should target one-click, fully automated DRT analysis for multidimensional EIS spectra interpretation, software validation, and reliability. Particularly, creating a collaborative ecosystem hinged on free software could promote innovation and catalyze the adoption of the DRT method throughout all fields that use impedance data. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.

What is green finance, after all? – Exploring definitions and their implications under the Brazilian biofuel policy (RenovaBio)

Climate change concerns and energy transitions are currently addressing not only energy technologies and innovations to decarbonize economies, but also financial mechanisms to enable such transitions. The concepts of green finance and green investment have expanded in recent years, bringing perspectives to support sustainable projects. In this study, we examine the scientific research in green finance to identify advances, main topics, and policy recommendations. We then explore how green financing can play an important role in supporting the development and implementation of biofuel projects in Brazil. The biofuel policy (RenovaBio) established a carbon market the so-called “Decarbonization Credits” (CBIOs), which is a financial instrument designed to incentivize the production and use of sustainable biofuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The findings suggest that green finance needs to advance with a clear definition of their requirements and standards not to fund non-green projects and projects that overlook social and environmental sustainability for economic benefits, and to enable investors to better assess risks and opportunities of their investments. Regarding green finance for biofuel, while some studies suggest that biofuels could play a role in the transition to a green economy, others warn of the environmental costs associated with large-scale production, which can lead to negative impacts on biodiversity, and land-water use. It is expected that the green finance issue in Brazil will find fertile ground in the biofuel sector. However, this will depend on sustainable agriculture practices, as well as on designing the RenovaBio program in such a way that is transparent, accountable, and socially and environmentally responsible. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.
