The existence of a minimum in the cylindrical Poiseuille flow of a rarefied gas has been known since the experiments of Knudsen [Ann. Phys. 4, 75 (1909)]. Previously, the phenomenon has been studied with models of the Boltzmann equation, but results for the Boltzmann equation itself have not been reported. In the present paper, proceeding from recent studies, first the SN numerical algorithm for solving the linearized Boltzmann equation for the cylindircal geometry is outlined. Then, explicit numerical results for a rigid sphere gas and the boundary condition of diffuse specular reflection are obtained. The results show a minimum of the flow rate, and generally, provide a good description of the experimental data.

The final goal of this study is an integrated approach of walk-through from the classification of defect products to the feature estimation for preventing the cause of the defects in real-time or proactively. Particularly, this paper will introduce the multimodal data analytics in production process integrations to analyze the classification of defect patterns of final product quality and the defect cause impact in integrated manner. There are three steps to summarize the possibilities and limitations of the multimodal data analyses. The first step is the accuracy improvement of the classification of the multi-class defect patterns of images at lower cost by using additional feature/data substituting human-being domain knowledge. That is also to prepare more accurate and effective classifications of superposition pattern of small samples data. The second step is adaptive selections and estimations of important features including interactions and variety within a practical computational time and accuracy. The third step is an integrated approach of walk-through from the classification to the feature estimation for proactively preventing the causes of the defect. As the first report, this paper introduces the first and the third issues through a case study. System users have been a demonstrated source of innovations and breakthrough ideas. While there is a wealth of literature dedicated to understanding this source of innovation for its ability to generate new markets;understanding how users design and change systems remains understudied. As an initial step, this research seeks to understand problem solving mechanisms employed by users. To observe this phenomenon, this initial research considers an extreme case of user design, the development of a complex system. Three categories of change mechanisms were employed by users: user, method and material. As a departure from traditional design methods it was found that users view themselves as a dynamic component of the system and change themselves or their behaviors to enable system capabilities. In the case considered, users were able to rapidly develop a complex system to meet new requirements;interestingly this was accomplished with either modular or minimally invasive equipment changes. While traditional flexible design tenets were present in the materiel components of the system (e.g. robustness and modularity), the skill and capacity of the system users provided a separate source of system flexibility. © American Society for engineering Management, 2015.

This paper explains the development of an electric cart that helps the elderly maintain or improve their physical strength. Unlike commercially available ones, it has a pedal unit that provides some exercise for a user in training his lower limbs. An impedance model describes the feeling of pushing the pedals. The largest pedal load is determined based on a pedaling experiment. An H∞ controller is designed for each of the largest pedal load and virtually no load. A control law, which is based on the concept of dynamic parallel distributed compensation, is designed using the rating of perceived exertion of a driver as a criterion to choose a pedal load between the largest and almost zero. Five university students and twelve elderly people participated experiments to verify the system design and the validity of the system.

Physician scheduling is a critical task that impacts the quality of patient care, staff satisfaction, and operational efficiency in healthcare institutions. The traditional approach to physician scheduling is manual and time-consuming, which can result in errors, staff burnout, and suboptimal schedules. To address these challenges, researchers have turned to optimization techniques like CSP, which has shown promise in solving physician scheduling problems. This paper reviews the existing literature on CSP for physician scheduling and highlights the benefits and limitations of this approach. CSP's benefits include generating schedules quickly and efficiently, incorporating complex constraints and preferences, and handling changes and disruptions in real time. However, CSP also has some limitations, such as the need for a formalized model and the fact that it may not always generate the most intuitive schedules. Overall, the findings suggest that CSP is a promising approach to physician scheduling that can produce high-quality schedules while minimizing staff burnout and improving operational efficiency. © 2023 IEEE.

IoT edge platform has become popular in various distributed environments. The edge devices need to communicate BigData among them or with the cloud servers by collaborating with AI technologies for finding events from the applications. Those devices exchange data streams from such as distributed sensors and remote image/video devices. We focus on an acceleration technique for the communication performance using a stream-based lossless data compression technology. This paper proposes a parallelization technique for the compression process in a software environment running on a multicore processor. The technique invokes concurrent compression processes assigned to multiple threads with splitting a data stream to chunks. The paper exposes three scheduling methods for assigning the chunks to the threads: in-order, hybrid and out-of-order. As an original data order of chunks must be obtained in decompression side, the proposed technique introduces packeting mechanisms in each chunk by adding headers to support the scheduling methods. Through experimental performance evaluations, we discuss the packeting overhead focusing on compression ratio and speedup by the parallelization with three scheduling methods. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper focuses on a performance enhancement of communication performance by compressing data stream. ASE coding is an effective lossless data compression method for data stream. The software implementation of the coding/decoding method inevitably meets a performance mismatch in memory and storage devices. In the compressor side, it is predictable to decide the size of an original data block and is available to process a flexible buffer memory. However, the decompressor is not able to predict the buffer size because the original data size is not obvious before the decompression. This causes a performance mismatch in the filesystem level. This paper proposes a novel method to address the performance mismatch by applying a notification mechanism of compression size from the compressor. This paper describes the mechanism focusing on the system call usage. Through experimental evaluations, we show the performance improvement of the decompression performance for handling data stream. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper describes the use of the web casting in a new engineering program that started in Fall 2004at East Carolina University. The program presents a unique design synthesis of concentration areas required to enhance regional economic development and the best practices identified from the work of the National Science Foundation (NSF) engineering Education Coalition (EEC) program. The paper presents how the Web is used to invite and to link the local community and the local industry to the program through the University's Global Classroom and how the contemporary educational technology, with computer-based methods of delivering courses are used to supplement traditional lectures. Special emphasis will be given to the students' design projects with the local industries. Detailed description of the program and the projects is presented in this paper. © 2005 IEEE.

The current study examines the performance of freshman students in a new engineering program at East Carolina University and compares it to their performance at high school. ECU'S engineering program started in Fall 2004 and it differs from many other engineering programs in three primary ways: (1) it emphasizes the application of engineering theory to the real world by engaging freshman students in hands-on engineering activities, (2) the mathematics and science content are integrated with the engineering courses, and (3) the students are working very closely with the engineering faculty and their mates in a team-based learning process (cohort system). The performance of the students in the engineering program is evaluated based on the details of their grades in engineering, and general education courses. Meanwhile, their GPA and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores is used to evaluate their performance in high school. © 2005 IEEE.
