This research is dedicated to formulating a practical problem related to the assignment of oncology clinic routes. The objective is to schedule medical events for patients attending health centers, taking into account the variable demand and limited resources in this field. To achieve this, three types of solutions are considered. The first is an Online Scheduling Algorithm, which simulates a scheduling process based on medical routes and also includes its inverse version. The next is a Mixed-Integer Linear programming (MILP) model. In this case, information is centralized, and patients are scheduled based on their requirements, minimizing delays in their appointments and/or medical treatments. These methodologies are compared with the current mode of assignment used. To test the previously proposed solutions, data provided by the Arturo López Perez Foundation (FALP) will be used.

The state of the art of artificial intelligence (AI) for various medical imaging applications leads to enhanced accuracy, analysis, visualization, and interpretation of chest Xray (CXR) images for diagnosis. Many diseases are diagnosed based on CXR images. In this paper, two types of abnormalities are diagnosed based on AI techniques. The two classes are atelectasis and cardiomegaly. The acquired images are segmented to localize the chest region and then enhanced using gray-level transformation methods. The enhanced images are passed to two pretrained convolutional neural networks (CNNs): shuffle and mobile net. The transfer learning approach is utilized in this stage. The automated features are extracted from the last fully connected layer. Each CNN deserves to have the two most representative features for the two classes. These four features are passed to support the vector machine classifier. The training accuracy reached 100% and the test accuracy was 96.7%. The proposed method can be extended to be a milestone in the classification of all heart-lung diseases that can be diagnosed using chest X-ray images. © 2022 IEEE.

This study aims to give an accurate estimate of the effective thermal-mechanical properties of a coreless circuit substrate for advanced IC packages. To achieve the goal, a subdomain-based effective method is proposed, incorporating a sub-domain three-dimensional (3D) copper trace mapping and modeling (TMM) method, a volume-averaging rule of mixture (ROM) technique and finite element modeling. Furthermore, the proposed effective method is combined with an FEA-based process simulation framework to investigate the process-induced warpage of a flip-chip chip scale package during fabrication. At last, parametric analysis is performed to identify the crucial factors influencing the process-induced warpage of the package.

This work demonstrates the development of a prototype system that could improve urban and digital accessibility for People with Disability - PwD. The research involves using an academic questionnaire to enable a wider perspective of the central subject and assessing the effectiveness of the proposed solution. The main goal is to help social integration and make the future solution implementable for smart cities through an experiment in an academic campus. The dissertation is related to technological and social issues that might be used as a resource by researchers, public or private bodies interested in more profound studies. The document recognizes the lack of studies on this subject, especially in Brazil because there are few available articles. The prototype system is designed to tackle the issues faced by persons with disability in urban settings through platforms, applications and mobile phones as it proposes a comprehensive set of solutions when addressing accessibility for PwDs. In turn, this research fosters knowledge advancements in the field of urban accessibility and provides vital recommendations for developing inclusive technologies and policies.

Simplified POMDP Planning with an Alternative Observation Space and Formal Performance Guarantees

Online planning under uncertainty in partially observable domains is an essential capability in robotics and AI. The partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) is a mathematically principled framework for addressing decision-making problems in this challenging setting. However, finding an optimal solution for POMDPs is computationally expensive and is feasible only for small problems. In this work, we contribute a novel method to simplify POMDPs by switching to an alternative, more compact, observation space and simplified model to speedup planning with formal performance guarantees. We introduce the notion of belief tree topology, which encodes the levels and branches in the tree that use the original and alternative observation space and models. Each belief tree topology comes with its own policy space and planning performance. Our key contribution is to derive bounds between the optimal Q-function of the original POMDP and the simplified tree defined by a given topology with a corresponding simplified policy space. These bounds are then used as an adaptation mechanism between different tree topologies until the optimal action of the original POMDP can be determined. Further, we consider a specific instantiation of our framework, where the alternative observation space and model correspond to a setting where the state is fully observable. We evaluate our approach in simulation, considering exact and approximate POMDP solvers and demonstrating a significant speedup while preserving solution quality. We believe this work opens new exciting avenues for online POMDP planning with formal performance guarantees. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The Centrifugal Nuclear Thermal Rocket (CNTR) is a Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) concept designed to heat propellant directly by the reactor fuel. The primary difference between the CNTR concept and traditional NTP systems is that rather than using traditional solid fuel elements, the CNTR uses liquid fuel with the liquid contained in rotating cylinders by centrifugal force. If the concept can be successfully realized, the CNTR would have a high specific impulse (up to 1800 s) at high thrust, which may enable (i) viable near-term human Mars exploration by reducing round-trip times to 420 days and (ii) direct injection orbits for scientific rendezvous missions to the Solar System outer planets and Kuiper Belt objects. Research is presently underway to determine resolutions for the significant engineering challenges that the CNTR concept presents. These challenges, the study plans to address them, and progress have been described previously;this paper provides an update on progress to date for the overall research effort, including strategies and key results on revision of a reference configuration, definition of key parameters which allows integration of the results of various analyses, and reviews strategies to mitigate the problem of Uranium vapor saturating the propellant exhaust and significantly impacting the CNTR’s specific impulse. Analyses and experiments, both underway and planned, to update estimates of engine key performance parameters including specific impulse, thrust and thrust to weight ratio along with the identification of selected design margins within the engine itself are described – all toward the goal of enabling plans for a laboratory demonstration of a single Centrifugal Fuel Element. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Autonomous agents operating in real-world scenarios frequently encounter uncertainty and make decisions based on incomplete information. Planning under uncertainty can be mathematically formalized using partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs). However, finding an optimal plan for POMDPs can be computationally expensive and is feasible only for small tasks. In recent years, approximate algorithms, such as tree search and sample-based methodologies, have emerged as state-of-the-art POMDP solvers for larger problems. Despite their effectiveness, these algorithms offer only probabilistic and often asymptotic guarantees toward the optimal solution due to their dependence on sampling. To address these limitations, we derive a deterministic relationship between a simplified solution that is easier to obtain and the theoretically optimal one. First, we derive bounds for selecting a subset of the observations to branch from while computing a complete belief at each posterior node. Then, since a complete belief update may be computationally demanding, we extend the bounds to support reduction of both the state and the observation spaces. We demonstrate how our guarantees can be integrated with existing state-of-the-art solvers that sample a subset of states and observations. As a result, the returned solution holds deterministic bounds relative to the optimal policy. Lastly, we substantiate our findings with supporting experimental results.

Radio frequency energy harvesting has attracted considerable interest as a technique of enabling self-powered wireless networks. This technique faces several challenges, such as the receiving and the rectifying modules of a rectenna system. Multiband antennas provide several comparative advantages against the goal of maximizing the amount of energy harvesting. In this work, we present a multiband microstrip patch antenna with three slits operating in the LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) and the cellular (GSM-1800 and UMTS) communication frequency bands. A feasible solution of the antenna is obtained by the application of a recently introduced nature-inspired optimization technique, namely the Coyote Optimization Algorithm. The proposed antenna operates satisfactorily in the LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) and the cellular (GSM-1800 and UMTS) communication frequency bands. Measured results of the proposed antenna exhibit an acceptable performance (multiband frequency operation, maximum gain of 3.94 dBi, broadside operation) and demonstrate features of operation, which make it a strong candidate for various RF energy harvesting applications. © 2020 IEEE.

Prognostics and health management (PHM) is an engineering discipline that aims to maintain system behaviour and function and ensure mission success, safety and effectiveness. Addressing the challenges in prognostics and health management for modern intelligent systems, especially automated driving systems, is complex due to the contextual nature of faults. This complexity necessitates a thorough understanding of spatial, and temporal conditions, and relationships within operational scenarios and life-cycle stages. This paper introduces a framework designed to automatically recognize driving scenarios in automated driving systems using graph neural networks (GNNs). The framework extracts relational data from image frames, constructing graph-based models and transforming unstructured sensory data into structured data with diverse node types and relationships. A specific graph neural network processes the graph model to reveal and detect operational conditions and relationships. The proposed framework is evaluated using the KITTI dataset, demonstrating superior performance compared to conventional feed-forward networks such as MLP, particularly in handling relational data.
