This study presents an optimal day-ahead operational scheduling strategy for a battery energy storage system(BESS) to achieve savings for a time-of-use(TOU) customer. This optimization problem is solved using a Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) algorithm with an evaluation of its sensitivity to photovoltaic(PV) and load forecast errors. A new initialization process based on two non-optimized algorithms is proposed to enhance PSO convergence during the optimal scheduling process. By charging the BESS with surplus PV generation or during off-peak periods and discharging it during peak times or when contracted demand limits are exceeded, an initial particle population is provided as an input to the PSO. The state of charge(SOC) is maintained within the normal range by stopping the BESS output selected by the PSO as needed. The PSO's performance is assessed in real-time operation using historical PV and load data. The proposed method is simulated using MATLAB software to verify its effectiveness showing 17% and 10% cost saving over one day and one month, respectively. Additionally, the PSO demonstrates robust performance for forecast error under 10%. © 2025 IEEE.

This paper introduces a grid forming(GFM) inverter equipped with a hybrid islanding detection method which combined the positive feedback(PF) of the point of common coupling(PCC) voltage based active method used and the frequency deviation as a passive method. The proposed algorithm is implemented inside the GFM voltage controller. Furthermore, a frequency deviation threshold is addressed based on a theoretical approach in order to relieve continuous disturbance injection. This hybrid method doesn't undergo a non-detection zone(NDZ) and, an additionally, a continuous operation of the microgrid is achieved. Moreover, the proposed algorithms can distinguish islanding phenomenon against load switching during grid connected mode. The results are evaluated by simulations using ATPdraw software. © 2024 IEEE.

This work proposes a model reference adaptive control based on recursive neural networks. This secondary-level controller corrects the deviations on the voltage and frequency setpoints of a simple primary control in an isolated microgrid (MG) with multiple distributed generators (DGs). The controller has two nonlinear autoregressive with external input neural networks to emulate the microgrid and guide the whole system according to an appropriate reference model. The networks are trained with synthetic data from a simulation MG and the order of the networks are obtained with a deterministic method. The method is tested with a three-units MG in a Matlab simulation under different working conditions. Results show the proper performance of the proposed controllers in comparison to a PI strategy. © 2024, European Association for the Development of Renewable Energy, Environment and Power Quality (EA4EPQ). The power transformer is the most important element of equipment in an electrical transmission and distribution network. The power and voltage levels that these transformers can manage determine their size, and as the transformer's volume increases, internal isolation and cooling become more challenging. The most popular insulating fluid used in transformers for insulation and cooling is mineral-based oil, which has demonstrated exceptional dielectric and thermal qualities. However, alternative oil technologies have been sought to replace mineral-based oils in recent years because to concerns about safety, cost, and environmental impact. In this context, extensive research efforts have emerged on biological oils for use in transformers. This paper examines the sustainability, safety, and electrical performance of bio-based ester oil in transformer applications with respect to dissolved gas analysis (DGA). AI-based Fuzzy logic controller (FLC) with Duval's triangle (DT) and Duval's pentagon (DP), IEC, CIGRE reports are used in a hybrid manner to identify the possible incipient faults inside the oil-immersed transformers. The graphical analysis of various fuzzy logic plots along with DT and DP are utilized to critically analyze the possible incipient faults arrayed due to DGA. The proposed work proficient compared to previously published results. Highest efficiency of DT and DP based FLC (92%), followed by furan analysis (82.3%). Lastly, recommendations are made on potential fixes for the problems raised and the future course of study for alternate dielectric fluids-based power transformers. The suggested techniques in this research offer a higher diagnostic accuracy than the present approach. © 2025 IEEE.

In this work, a dynamic weighting-artificial neural network (DW-ANN) methodology is presented for quick and automated compact model (CM) generation. It takes advantage of both TCAD simulations for high accuracy and SPICE simulations for cost-effectiveness. This methodology is developed for gate-all-around (GAA) silicon (Si) nanosheet (NS) complementary field effect transistor (CFET), a potential candidate for future CMOS technology due to its innate properties. The critical process variation (PV) sources that severely degrade the CFET performance are estimated using DW-ANN. It reduces the computation cost and predicts the effects of PV sources with less than 1% error. Furthermore, a compact DW-ANN-based Verilog-A model has been developed that captures the dc as well as transient behavior accurately for circuit-level analysis. CFET-based circuits such as inverter, 6T-static random access memory (SRAM), and ring oscillator (RO) are characterized and implemented using DW-ANN-based CM. The overall average error of the model is reported as less than 2%. Therefore, the proposed device and circuit modeling approach provides a feasible solution for the rapid compact modeling of new emerging devices with good convergence and high accuracy. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

State of the art (SOTA) neural text to speech (TTS) models can generate natural-sounding synthetic voices. These models are characterized by large memory footprints and substantial number of operations due to the long-standing focus on speech quality with cloud inference in mind. Neural TTS models are generally not designed to perform standalone speech syntheses on resource-constrained and no Internet access edge devices. In this work, an efficient neural TTS called EfficientSpeech that synthesizes speech on an ARM CPU in real-time is proposed. EfficientSpeech uses a shallow non-autoregressive pyramid-structure transformer forming a U-Network. EfficientSpeech has 266k parameters and consumes 90 MFLOPS only or about 1% of the size and amount of computation in modern compact models such as Mixer-TTS. EfficientSpeech achieves an average mel generation real-time factor of 104.3 on an RPi4. Human evaluation shows only a slight degradation in audio quality as compared to FastSpeech2. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper discusses energy and cost comparison for 9 different combinations of Photovoltaic (PV) and Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) sizes with load demand peak changes for the Kayangel Power System (KPS). 9 PV and BESS combinations were modeled with the existing 90kW Diesel Generator (DG) and simulated while analyzing the kWh energy values of DG operation, PV curtailment and battery power flow energy values. A comparative cost analysis was then conducted on these 3 energies using Installation Costs (IC), diesel fuel costs and energy charge costs. Following this, the study was expanded to a 20-year time period for more complete system lifetime cost estimations. Simulated energy losses and system costs showed mostly favorable values during increased PV and BESS sizes and shifted load demand peak. Simulation results also identified combinations where increased sizing and shifted load demand peak made little difference. © 2023 IEEE.

The utilization of renewable energy (RE) has increased worldwide because it is one of the effective ways to minimize greenhouse gases. The power outputs of photovoltaic (PV) and wind farms depend on weather conditions. High penetration of intermittent renewable energy (IRE) will put pressure on frequency regulation, and frequency fluctuation will increase because IRE does not participate in frequency regulation. This study evaluated the role of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the frequency regulation of a grid with large-scale IRE. The simulations were conducted in the MATLAB-Simulink environment, taking into consideration the operating conditions of the Republic of South Africa (RSA) power system, such as frequency deviation limits. Eskom's (the RSA utility company) policy requires its operators to keep the system frequency between 49.85 Hz and 50.15 Hz 95% of the time. The BESS was integrated into the load frequency control (LFC) model to assist with frequency regulation and maintain the frequency between 49.85 Hz and 50.15 Hz. © 2023 IEEE.

Data selection can be used in conjunction with adaptive filtering algorithms to avoid unnecessary weight updating and thereby reduce computational overhead. This paper presents a novel correntropy-based data selection method as an alternative to conventional data selection mechanisms based on squared error values. We developed a variable correntropy sensing algorithm to maximize the instantaneous correntropy function for the Gaussian kernel function to mitigate the impact of impulse noise and other forms of noise that can be disregarded in data selection. The proposed data selection mechanism can be implemented with any adaptive filtering algorithm. In simulations, the proposed method (implemented with the least mean squared algorithm) outperformed comparable error-based data selection schemes in terms of hit rate and miss rate, and the resulting weight updating ratio was close to the expected weight updating ratio. © 2023 IEEE.
