Application code and processor parallelization, together with instruction set customization, are the most common and effective ways to enhance the performance and efficiency of application-specific processors (ASIPs). Both the effective code parallelization and data/task parallelism exploitation, as well as effective instruction set customization, enable an ASIP to achieve a significant performance improvement using limited extra hardware resources. However, a naive parallelization or instruction set customization may not result in the required performance improvement, leading to a waste of computing and energy resources. Therefore, when performing parallelization or custom instruction selection, complex tradeoffs between processing speed, circuit area and power consumption must be closely observed. In this paper, we propose and discuss an efficient ASIP-based Multi-Processor System-on-a-Chip (MPSoC) design for ray-tracing, exploiting application parallelism and hardware replication-aware instruction set customization. Without hardware sharing among the custom instructions units, the proposed parallel ray-tracer MPSoC design with custom instructions achieves 77% speed up in comparison to a single microprocessor design with the default instruction set. However, with the replication-aware instruction set customization, the speed up increases to 81%. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

Brain activity produces electrical signals that can be detected in a non-invasive or invasive way, and BCI (Brain-Computer Interface) systems can translate these signals into commands, which allow communication with devices without involvement of peripheral nerves and muscles. This paper shows the development of a non-invasive BCI system using brain signals from somatosensory cortex. The acquisition of signals was performed using one electrode cap in accordance with 10-20 system and using 3-channel EEG in order to command a motorized wheelchair without involvement of peripheral nerves and muscles. In the experiment with the wheelchair, 65.7% hit rates (average) were obtained for two directions, respectively.

This work describes a hardware architecture for implementing a sequential approach of the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) that is suitable for mobile robotics tasks, such as self-localization, mapping and navigation problems. As such algorithm is computationally intensive, commonly it is implemented in PC-based platforms to be employed on larger robots. In order to allow the development of small robotic platforms, as those required in many current state of the art research (for instance micro robotics area), small size, low-power and high precision computation capabilities are required. This work proposes a hardware architecture for self-localization task, allowing the fusion of data coming from different sensors such as ultrasonic and laser rangefinder. The architecture is based on a single precision floating-point arithmetic, allowing the operations to be computed with large precision and dynamic range. The system has been adapted for achieving a reconfigurable platform, suitable for research tasks, and applied to a Pioneer 3AT mobile robot platform from Mobile Robots Inc. In order to compare the performance of the system, the same localization technique has been implemented in a high-end PC, as well as using an embedded microprocessor Nios II from Alter a Inc. In this paper several metrics have been used to evaluate system performance and suitability, measuring FPGA resources consumption and performance. Finally, the suitability of reconfigurable devices for such kind of applications has been verified and also discussed. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents a three axis capacitive MEMS accelerometer including individual lateral and vertical accelerometers in a same die. The three axis capacitive MEMS accelerometer is fabricated by utilizing a glass-silicon-glass multi-stack formed by a fabrication process depending on the double glass modified silicon on glass process (DGM-SOG), where the structural layer is selected to be 35 μm thick silicon. The fabrication process uses the Au-Si eutectic bonding in the last step of the formation of the glass-silicon-glass multi-stack, eliminating the stiction risk of the suspended silicon structures to the top glass with the voltage free feature of the Au-Si eutectic bonding method, allowing to implement 2μιη capacitive gaps for the vertical accelerometers without any pull in during fabrication, while matching 2μιη capacitive gaps of the lateral accelerometers. The top glass wafer allows implementing not only a top electrode for the vertical accelerometer, but also a cap for the entire structure. The fabricated three axis MEMS capacitive accelerometer die is 12×7×1 mm3. Measured capacitances of the lateral and the vertical accelerometers are 9.4 pF and 7.4 pF, but their capacitance change is similar to each other, as they are approximately measured as 90 fF/V and 100 fF/V, respectively. The Brownian noise of the lateral and vertical are estimated to be 6 Mg/√Hz and 7.6 Mg/√Hz, respectively. © 2013 IEEE.

This study aims at applying algorithms for the spectral estimation and the classification of EEG signals during imaginary movements. Accordingly, it was used a database created by Graz University of Technology for the BCI Competition II. The database was created through an experiment in which an individual was asked to imagine the movement of her right or left hand while the EEG signal reading (Electroencephalogram) was being performed directly on the scalp by using three bipolar electrodes. In order to analyze the EEG signals for spectral estimation, it was used the Periodogram method computed in three different frequencies in μ-rythm (8 a 13Hz) and β-rythm (14 a 25Hz) frequencies to generate the Naive Bayes classifier entries. This database enabled to obtain a hit rate higher than 80%, which is consistent with results from the literature. Systems based on Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) can appropriate these algorithms to trigger and control devices through mental intentions only.

There is a health crisis in the US related to diet that is further exacerbated by our aging population and sedentary lifestyles. Six of the ten leading causes of death in the United States can be directly linked to diet. Dietary assessment, the process of determining what someone eats during the course of a day, is essential for understanding the link between diet and health. We are developing imaging based tools to automatically obtain accurate estimates of what foods a user consumes. Accurate food segmentation is essential for identifying food items and estimating food portion sizes. In this paper, we present a quantitative evaluation of automatic image segmentation methods for food image analysis used for dietary assessment. The experiments indicate that local variation is more suitable for food image segmentation in general dietary assessment studies where the food images acquired have complex background.

Multiple sequence alignment (MSA) is a widely used method to uncover the relationships between the biomolecular sequences. One essential prerequisite to apply this procedure is to have a considerable amount of similarity between the test sequences. It's usually not possible to obtain reliable results from the multiple alignments of large and diverse datasets. Here we propose a method to obtain sequence clusters of significant intragroup similarities and make sense out of the multiple alignments containing remote sequences. This is achieved by thresholding the pairwise connectivity map over 2 parameters. The first one is the inferred pairwise evolutionary distances and the second parameter is the number of gapless positions on the pairwise comparisons of the alignment. Threshold curves are generated regarding the statistical parameter values obtained from a shuffled dataset and probability distribution techniques are employed to select an optimum threshold curve that eliminate as much of the unreliable connectivities while keeping the reliable ones. We applied the method on a large and diverse dataset composed of nearly 18000 human proteins and measured the biological relevance of the recovered connectivities. Our precision measure (0.981) was nearly 20% higher than the one for the connectivities left after a classical thresholding procedure displaying a significant improvement. Finally we employed the method for the functional clustering of protein sequences in a gold standard dataset. We have also measured the performance, obtaining a higher F-measure (0.882) compared to a conventional clustering operation (0.827).

We are developing a dietary assessment system that records daily food intake through the use of food images taken at a meal. The food images are then analyzed to extract the nutrient content in the food. In this paper, we describe the image analysis tools to determine the regions where a particular food is located (image segmentation), identify the food type (feature classification) and estimate the weight of the food item (weight estimation). An image segmentation and classification system is proposed to improve the food segmentation and identification accuracy. We then estimate the weight of food to extract the nutrient content from a single image using a shape template for foods with regular shapes and area-based weight estimation for foods with irregular shapes.

In this study, two fuzzy algorithms, type-1 fuzzy algorithm with parameterized conjunctors and a novel approach interval type-2 fuzzy algorithm with parameterized conjunctors are used in the modeling application for nonlinear functions. The aim of using parameterized conjunctors as fuzzy operators in these algorithms is not to lose or distort the expert knowledge about the system during the optimization process. In this study, this linguistic information about the system is obtained by using fuzzy c-means clustering algorithms. Then, the designed fuzzy algorithms are tested on two benchmark nonlinear functions in modeling application.
