We are developing a dietary assessment system to automatically identify and quantify foods and beverages consumed by analyzing meal images captured with a mobile device. After food items are segmented and identified, accurately estimating the volume of the food in the image is important for determining the nutrient content of the food. In this paper, we proposed a novel food portion size estimation method for rigid food items using a single image. First, we create a 3D graphical model during the training step using 3D reconstruction from multiple views. Then, for each food image, we determine the translation and elevation parameters of each of the food items, which are relative to the camera coordinate through camera calibration. Using these geometric parameters we project the pre-built 3D model of each food item back to the image plane. Subsequently, the remaining degrees-of-freedom (DOF) for the final pose is estimated by image similarity measure. The experimental results of our volume estimation method for four food categories validate the accuracy and reliability of our model-based approach.

We are developing a dietary assessment system that records daily food intake through the use of food images. Recognizing food in an image is difficult due to large visual variance with respect to eating or preparation conditions. This task becomes even more challenging when different foods have similar visual appearance. In this paper we propose to incorporate two types of contextual dietary information, food co-occurrence patterns and personalized learning models, in food image analysis to reduce ambiguity in food visual appearance and improve food recognition accuracy. We evaluate our model on 1453 food images acquired by 45 participants in natural eating conditions. The result shows that incorporating contextual dietary information improves the food categorization accuracy by about 10%.

With the increase in demand for higher-quality and more capable IT services, IT organizations in order to obtain competitive advantage require extensive knowledge that needs to be shared and reused among different entities within the organization. The existing IT Service Management (ITSM) mechanisms mention the importance of organizational learning (OL) and knowledge management (KM) for IT organizations. However, they do not explicitly address how OL capabilities of an IT organization can be assessed. This paper, by using an OL assessment model developed for software organizations, namely AiOLoS, shows that with the proper adjustment, the application of the model to IT organizations is feasible. We report the results of applying the model in four functional teams in an IT organization from private sector.

For an automatic chromosome classification, band resolution information is required in order to perform diagnosis on numerical and structural abnormalities. Metaphases with low band resolution are normal used for numerical abnormality analysis while metaphases with high band resolution are used for structural abnormality analysis. In our work, we classify metaphases into low and high band resolution groups using chromosome shape. This band classification task can automatically perform without human intervention leading to faster the diagnosis process. The results showed that chromosome shape information is able to classify metaphases into low and high band resolution groups with the accuracy of 73.08% and 95.24%, respectively.

This paper addresses the ongoing process of development of a small hand-held multiple unmanned aerial vehicle platform for surveillance and monitoring. The project cover all phases of development, from aerodynamic design and mechanical assembly, through fine tuning low level control loops and design of an attitude and heading reference system, up to implementation of navigation algorithms and finally flight testing. Commercial hardware is used to speed up development, allowing the team responsible for implementing the navigation algorithms to execute and test while the team responsible for the aerodynamics and electronics can design and compare results.

DC faults may cause severe disruptions in continuity of service to vital loads in a shipboard integrated power system, hence detection, isolation, and protection against such faults must be incorporated in both medium-voltage DC (MVDC) and low-voltage DC (LVDC) systems. Here we consider the effectiveness of existing z-source breakers and propose several new designs more appropriate for fault detection in MVDC and LVDC systems. In particular, we perform an optimization study that aims to minimize dissipation and weight and we identify the key parameters for use in MVDC and LVDC systems. Preliminary verification and validation studies are also included.

This paper presents a wafer level attachment method for handling various shaped structures for MEMS processes, using parylene as an interlayer material. In this method, a handle wafer containing pillars and perforations is utilized, and structures are attached to the handle wafer through a parylene coating process realized at room temperature with no applied force. It is observed that pillars with 20 μm height, 2.5 mm side length, and 4.5 mm spacing can successfully be used to attach two 4" substrates to each other. The shear strength between the attached substrates is measured as 0.49 MPa, proving the feasibility of the method for integrating various materials into MEMS processes.
