In this paper, we have employed printing technologies to print resonant circuit and detection circuit for an amplitude modulation system (AM radio), which consist of a printed inductor, capacitor, resistor and diode on plastic foils for using as an AM radio circuit. To test the printed inductor, capacitor, resistor and diode as components of AM radio, we selected 640 KHz, the strongest AM frequency in Sunchon City, Korea and monitored the audio signal by replacing each components by printed one. ©2009 IEEE.

In a radio frequency identification (RFID) system, when more than one tag communicates with a reader at the same time, a collision will occur resulting in the failure of that communication. Many anti-collision algorithms, such as binary tree (BT), FSA, and DFSA have been used in ISO and EPC standards to prevent such a collision. This paper develops a new anti-collision algorithm based on the BT and the DFSA algorithms. Specifically, all tags are divided into many groups using the DSFA algorithm. Then, the tags in each group are identified using the BT algorithm. Results indicate that the proposed algorithm performs better than the existing ones in terms of the number of used time slots (the less the used time slot, the faster the algorithm).

Currently several methodologies exist to assess the Responsibilities Assignment Problem in Power Quality. In this paper an experimental setup with two known disturbing electrically and mechanically coupled loads has been used to provide a reference disturbance setup for comparing these methodologies. The results and discussion extracted from this experiment is reported in this paper. The setup offered the possibility of adjusting the active power direction under several operative conditions and under two different feeding network configurations. Quantities defined in the standards IEEE 1459 and DIN 40110 are also employed to broaden the analysis and diagnostic possibilities.

The aim of this paper is to propose an impulsive controller which is to guarantee the asymptotic synchronization of the master and slave chaotic systems. The impulsive controller is derived on the basis of the Lyapunov theory and the linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique. A numerical example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the main results.

This paper presents the binding characteristics study of dengue non-structural protein 1 (NS1) antigen and its antibody using circular dichroism technique in far UV region. Circular dichroism (CD) is a spectroscopic technique which measures differences in the absorption of left-handed and right handed circularly polarized light. The CD spectrum can determine conformation of the NS1 antigen and its antibody, conformational changes of the antigen-antibody interaction and estimates the secondary structure of these proteins in far UV region. Firstly, CD spectrum of individual solutions of the antigen and the antibody were measured. Then, the solutions were mixed to produce a solution of complex dengue NS1 antigen and its antibody for measurement. The findings show that the antibody has the highest positive band of CD intensity follow by the complex antigen-antibody and antigen. The antibody is a chiral structure, has high helical conformation and more ordered epitope structure. Meanwhile, the NS1 antigen shows the negative and the lowest CD spectrum. The antigen is low chirality and has more random-like conformation. The complex (binding of the antigen and antibody) has the CD spectrum's shape similar to the antibody but in lower intensity. So, it has helical and beta conformations lower than the antibody. The binding characteristics of the complex solutions were also studied with increased in incubation time and with varied rotation applied. It is found that the immunoreactions between the antigen and its antibody are rapid processes which do not require too long incubation time. Besides, the applied rotation can increased the immunoreaction process.

In this work, we would like to highlight an international collaboration between Korea University, one of the premier universities in South Korea, and Penn State University-Harrisburg, for the development of an advanced video CODEC. It has been recently noticed that video coding based on 3-dimensional (3D) wavelet transforms has the potential of providing a scalable representation of video with variable spatial, temporal, and quality resolution. In this paper, we present a MATLAB-based software for the implementation of an advanced 3D dual-tree discrete wavelet transform video coding (DDWTVC). Compression ratio performance of the implemented CODEC that corresponds to a certain reconstruction quality is measured. Results show that the implemented DDWTVC offers better rate-distortion performance and superior visual quality than the 3D SPIHT, which is another well-known embedded video-coding algorithm with spatial, temporal, and PSNR-scalable bitstreams. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

The initial years of a tenure track position are difficult for a variety of reasons, including the lack of preparation and experience that new faculty members have for various aspects of the job. Much advice has been given regarding the use of mentoring and workshops to accelerate the acclimatization period, but these methods may not involve the relaxed atmosphere and open discussion conducive to the development and free exchange of ideas and ideologies. In this paper, we discuss our approach of regular peer meetings of such discussions. Peer meetings promote the discussion of problems encountered by new faculty as the problems develop. Not only does discussing problems in such meetings assist in the creation of solutions, but everyone who participates in the discussion is thereafter prepared to avoid similar problems in the future. Considerations of group composition, group size, and what topics to discuss are examined. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

This paper presents the result of our experiment in a sophomore Circuit Analysis course using the learning-through-teaching method. The main goals of students teaching students are to have the student learn the material effectively and to promote life-long learning by cultivating self-learning. Details of how to make it a successful learning and teaching experience for the students are discussed. Topics discussed include: Why is self leaning important? How is a student teaching assignment organized? How are students motivated? How is the effectiveness of learning-through-teaching assessed? What are the common mistakes? Hopefully, the experience from the learning-through-teaching presented in this paper can provide useful information for others who are interested in this kind of cooperative learning practice. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

Spatially resolved luminescence properties of InN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) consisting of nominally one monolayer (1-ML)-thick InN QWs embedded in a GaN matrix are studied by cross-sectional and plan-view cathodoluminescence measurements. First it is confirmed that the dominant emission peaks observed at around 390 nm to 430 nm in the MQWs samples are attributed to the effects of inserting ˜ 1-ML-thick InN wells in the GaN matrix, resulting in efficient localization of GaN excitons at InN QWs. Furthermore, it is revealed that the detailed structure of the MQWs, such as the thickness distribution and interface sharpness, is very sensitive to the presence of surface defects such as hillocks around screw-component threading dislocations, resulting in different emission wavelengths/energies. This is because the epitaxy process for depositing such thin InN wells is seriously affected by the atomic-level surface structures/properties of the growth front. It will be concluded that it is necessary to use lower dislocation density GaN bulk templates to obtain much higher structural quality InN/GaN MQWs good enough for characterizing their optical properties. © 2007 TMS.
