The digital triaxial accelerometer has become more and more popular in the research and industrial world due to its small size, low power consumption, low cost and its sensing capability in the x, y and z-axis directions. This paper proposes an efficient active noise cancelling (ANC) circuit design for the in-ear headphones. We develop a hardware oriented Least Mean Square (LMS) adaptive algorithm, and design a modified high-performance feed-forward ANC architecture which only uses one microphone to effectively cancel broadband noise for the in-ear headphones. The proposed ANC circuit design has been successfully implemented through adopting the standard cell-based design flow based on the TSMC 90nm CMOS technology. Besides, the proposed design has been verified under versatile noisy scenarios for its real-time ANC performance by using a Field programmable Gate Array (FPGA) platform. Experimental results show that the proposed high-performance circuit design can reduce disturbing noise of various frequency bands very well, and outperforms the existing works. The proposed design can attenuate the broadband pink noise between 300 Hz to 900 Hz, with a maximum performance of 18 dB. Moreover, the proposed design can achieve 406.5 k samples/sec data throughput rate at operating frequency of 50 MHz, at the costs of 111.7 k gates and power consumption of 4.47 mW.

Application code and processor parallelization, together with instruction set customization, are the most common and effective ways to enhance the performance and efficiency of application-specific processors (ASIPs). Both the effective code parallelization and data/task parallelism exploitation, as well as effective instruction set customization, enable an ASIP to achieve a significant performance improvement using limited extra hardware resources. However, a naive parallelization or instruction set customization may not result in the required performance improvement, leading to a waste of computing and energy resources. Therefore, when performing parallelization or custom instruction selection, complex tradeoffs between processing speed, circuit area and power consumption must be closely observed. In this paper, we propose and discuss an efficient ASIP-based Multi-Processor System-on-a-Chip (MPSoC) design for ray-tracing, exploiting application parallelism and hardware replication-aware instruction set customization. Without hardware sharing among the custom instructions units, the proposed parallel ray-tracer MPSoC design with custom instructions achieves 77% speed up in comparison to a single microprocessor design with the default instruction set. However, with the replication-aware instruction set customization, the speed up increases to 81%. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

This paper studies the statistical errors for the fingerprint-based RADAR neighbor matching localization with the linearly calibrated reference points (RPs) in logarithmic received signal strength (RSS) varying Wi-Fi environment. To the best of our knowledge, little comprehensive analysis work has appeared on the error performance of neighbor matching localization with respect to the deployment of RPs. However, in order to achieve the efficient and reliable location-based services (LBSs) as well as the ubiquitous context-awareness in Wi-Fi environment, much attention has to be paid to the highly accurate and cost-efficient localization systems. To this end, the statistical errors by the widely used neighbor matching localization are significantly discussed in this paper to examine the inherent mathematical relations between the localization errors and the locations of RPs by using a basic linear logarithmic strength varying model. Furthermore, based on the mathematical demonstrations and some testing results, the closed-form solutions to the statistical errors by RADAR neighbor matching localization can be an effective tool to explore alternative deployment of fingerprint-based neighbor matching localization systems in the future. © 2014 Mu Zhou et al.

This paper describes an experiment of integrating undergraduate and graduate courses at the Brazilian Aeronautics Institute of Technology, within the computer engineering Undergraduate program and the electronic and Computing engineering Graduate program, during the 2nd semester of 2011. A Smart Grids System case study was used as a Problem Based Learning strategy together with agile best practices within a project development. This experiment has involved four courses: Embedded Systems (undergraduate), Embedded and Real-Time Systems, Software Quality, Reliability, and Safety, and Advanced Topics in Software Testing. During this experiment, the students of all these courses had to interact and collaborate in order to produce a prototype of a Smart Grids System, simulating a real project development.

This paper proposes a modeling and controller design approach for a wind-diesel hybrid system including dump load. The proposed control scheme for power quality is fuzzy PI controller which has advantages of PI and fuzzy controller. Simulation results show that the proposed controller is more effective against disturbances caused by wind speed and load variation than the PI controller, and thus it contributes to a better quality wind-diesel hybrid power system. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is being commonly used as a diagnostic tool to distinguish different types of atrial tachyarrhythmias. The inherent complexity and mechanistic and clinical inter-relationships often brings about diagnostic difficulties to treating physicians and primary health care professionals creating frequent misdiagnoses and cross classifications using visual criteria. The current paper presents a methodology for ECG based pattern analysis for detection of atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation and normal sinus rhythm beats. ECG is an inherently non-linear and non-stationary signal;its variation may contain indicators of current disease, or warnings about impending cardiac diseases. Routinely used time domain and frequency domain methods will not be able to capture the hidden information present in the ECG beats. In the present study, we have used non-linear features of higher order spectra (HOS) to differentiate the normal, atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter ECG beats. The bispectrum features were subjected to independent component analysis (ICA) for data reduction. The ICA coefficients were subsequently subjected to K-nearest-neighbor (KNN), classification and regression tree (CART) and neural network (NN) classifiers to evaluate the best automated classifier. We have obtained an average accuracy of 97.65%, sensitivity and specificity of 98.75% and 99.53% respectively using ten-fold cross validation. Overall, the results show that application of higher order spectra statistics is useful for the classification of atrial tachyarrhythmias with reasonably high accuracies. Further validation of the proposed technique will yield acceptable results for clinical implementation.
